agreed, also biggest gripe with the album was just too many tracks, although i realize they are just trying to leave fans with as much music as possible due to Max's instability, i did enjoy the cameo though.

there's just so much filler on Genre and there's no separate themes for the discs, it just seems like an odd choice to make to do a double album simply because you wanted every song and idea recorded during the process on it no matter how average, pointless, or just plain bad it is. it could have been one disc easily and most of it would have been tunes off the first disc anyway.

It's probably also my attachment to IARB. I started to really listen to it at a time in my life when I needed exactly what Max had to say. It was the summer, new girlfriend, new attitude, new everything, and I think that album was pretty much my "soundtrack" if you will.

They're arent the same. IARB was based in indie/pop-punk and IDOG had much more diverse influences, i like the latter better.

My roommate last semester learned the majority of their songs on acoustic guitar, the unique thing about them was that the tunings were useless for playing any other cords or notes other than the ones used in the song, because it was like GCFAD or something that made no sense like that.

I love Say Anything. They're probably my favorite band. However, is there anyway I can not be grouped in the same category of fans as some of these other guys? I mean, Max writes great pop songs but he's not a better songwriter than Mr. Radiohead (and I'm not a fan of Radiohead in the least). His lyrics, while great, aren't unique to the point that someone else couldn't have written them. In fact, I'd describe his lyrics as the bastard baby of Freddie Mercury and Rivers Cuomo, two artists whose lyrics are almost completely different yet, for Max, it works. I honestly think the drugs and craziness Max had at the time influenced IARB more than Max did himself. That probably explains why In Defense was so different at times. Anyway, I think I forgot what my point was so I'll just stop typing now.

I'm in my third year of college, was previously an English major, and don't worship Max Bemis. I also fail to see where reading 19th century literature has absolutely anything to do with Say Anything, but maybe you were just attempting to insult me. Is it alright for me to like a band because of their music? I don't think the guy is a lyrical genius, although I do like his style of songwriting, but I know he isn't a god.

That wasn't me who said Fugazi sucks, I actually happen to enjoy some of their stuff.

The point I was trying to make is that every time I post in a topic in which you also post, you just insult me or others by making fun of a band that I like, or that the other person likes. I remember posting a comment, just to have you say that I was an idiot and was wrong because I liked Circa Survive.

Going off and insulting people or insulting their intelligence due to the fact that they like a band is stupid and makes your posts, though some are slightly intelligent and worthwhile, irrelevant.

Don't assume that just because a person likes Say Anything that they automatically worship Max. But even if someone does think he's an amazing songwriter, or a god, maybe.. just maybe he is to them. Who says that great songwriting is about extravagant lyrics, or really great imagery. Some of the best songs have been the most simple. It's all a matter of opinion. Not really something to get worked up about and go off on a tangent against a bunch of kids in a "Say Anything" thread, when obviously a ton of fans are going to be present.

I'm in my third year of college, was previously an English major, and don't worship Max Bemis. I also fail to see where reading 19th century literature has absolutely anything to do with Say Anything, but maybe you were just attempting to insult me. Is it alright for me to like a band because of their music? I don't think the guy is a lyrical genius, although I do like his style of songwriting, but I know he isn't a god.

The point I was trying to make is that every time I post in a topic in which you also post, you just insult me or others by making fun of a band that I like, or that the other person likes. Going off and insulting people or insulting their intelligence due to the fact that they like a band is stupid and makes your posts, though some are slightly intelligent and worthwhile, irrelevant.

. But even if someone does think he's an amazing songwriter, or a god, maybe.. just maybe he is to them. Who says that great songwriting is about extravagant lyrics, or really great imagery. Some of the best songs have been the most simple.

none of his songs have anything worthwhile in them. they're not "simple", they don't have good lyrics or decent imagery. the dude needs an editor. his voice is annoying, etc. there's really nothing good about this band except the fact that they're not a christian metalcore band.

It's all a matter of opinion. Not really something to get worked up about and go off on a tangent against a bunch of kids in a "Say Anything" thread, when obviously a ton of fans are going to be present.

yeah i should keep my opinions for anti-say anything threads because circle jerking to max bemis, which is what this site basically does, is way better than criticizing the god of the scene. sorry for my blasphemy.

the complexity gives it loads of lasting value cause there's always something you hear in every listen that you havent heard before. the songs also have a lot more motion than the 4 chords youd expect in the genre and that makes it more interesting to listen to, cause it moves around a lot, and in some songs its pretty ADD. theres not really any overrepetition. complex defintely doesnt always mean better, but there are a lot of cases where it does, as long as you're comparing the complexity within the genre.
