Annnnnnnnnd go.
Drew Beringer
02/25/08, 10:38 AM
Current or all time? Cause Randy Johnson in his prime was pretty damn intimidating.
Scott Weber

Joba! haha jk, but im sure he'll be up there eventually
id have to go with either Johan or Fausto Carmona...Carmona has some of the nastiest stuff ive seen in awhile
Scott Weber
02/25/08, 11:13 AM
I do not find anything about Fausto Carmona intimidating in the least. He may have good stuff (not great) but that doesn't make him intimidating.

Carlos Zambrano comes to mind. I wouldnt fuck around with that dude.
Julian Tavarez, too, because hes completely nuts. Just ask Joey Gathright.

i think Carmona is intimidating just because if he has his power sinker going he is downright unhittable. most guys even know that its coming and cant hit it

Does that make Wang intimidating? No... It just makes him tough to hit, maybe frustrating. I don't think that's intimidating, at all.
xbrokendownx
02/25/08, 11:46 AM
Wang's sinker is no where near as dominant as Carmona's, IMO. but yea
when i think intimidating i think somebody that throws pure heat and isnt afraid to go inside not somebody who has a good sinker. if tim wakefields knuckler was unhittable would you say he was intimidating...i dont think so.

Although I love Carmona I don't think he is really intimadating. But Bob Gibson is the most intimidating all time.

seriously. a sinker is not intimidating. a rising fastball or somebody that constantly pitches inside is intimidating, somebody who just acts mean as shit is intimidating. Pedro in his prime. Randy Johnson. Robb Nen. Now, I think you have to look at guys like Papelbon, JJ Putz, K-Rod, elite closers as being intimidating. I don't think there's nearly as many mean, intimidating starters as there used to be.
Scott Weber
02/25/08, 11:52 AM
also, did Fausto Carmona go to Villanova or something Floyd?
no but Fausto loves to cross swords while urinating

Yeah I think those 3 are good examples. Ill use K-Rod as an example cause Ive seen him pitch the most. He throws hard and isnt afraid to go inside and at times he has no control whatsoever so a 97 mph fastball could be coming at your head any pitch. That is something that is intimidating in my mind.

One day Carmona might be intimidating, but right now you can tell that he gets nervous against great hitters. It was walk city when he faced the Sox in the postseason.
Josh Beckett on the other hand has a certain swagger, especially in big games, so he's definitely intimidating (maybe not physically though ... and he's pudgy now, haha).

Yea or Carmona's 9 IP, 3 hitter against the Yankees in the post season

I know he did well against the Yankees. Against the Sox he folded though. Meanwhile Beckett blew away everyone throughout the postseason.

I'm not arguing that Beckett is a better pitcher, I was just stating that his game against the Sox had nothing to do with being nervous about facing good hitters, he just didn't have it that game.

That's possible. I thought maybe it had to do with nerves on the road, but I can't remember exactly how the series played out. In Game 2 I think he pitched at Fenway, and then he pitched game 6 in Fenway (?) I think it went CC, Fausto, Westbrook, Byrd, CC, Fausto, Westbrook.
Either way, he'll be intimidating for many many years with the stuff he's got.

Adam Eaton. Hitters are afraid they might actually make him look good -- below, average for the rest of the league.

hate to say it, but the dude's losing it. i don't really think there's anything intimidating about him anymore. he's shown that he's not indestructible. that takes the intimidation factor down a bit, don't you think.

02/25/08, 03:50 PM
I'd go with papelbon, rivera, or probably BJ Ryan, because he weights like 275 pounds and his shoulders are bigger than my entire wingspan.
Papelbon, and I think Joba's debut last season quickly put him right up there.

I can't really think of a hugely intimidating pitcher in today's game. I would have said Randy Johnson 4-6 years ago. In terms of stuff, I'd say guys like Peavy, Santana, and F. Rodriguez, but they don't really have an intimidating mound presence.
I hate to say it, but I think Carlos Zambrano is one of the more intimidating pitchers in today's game, at least against the Cardinals.

i dont think there really is such thing as intimidation, its all mental or completely based on repuation and a veteran player shouldnt be intimidated by anyone.

I hate to say it, but I think Carlos Zambrano is one of the more intimidating pitchers in today's game, at least against the Cardinals. You make a really good point here. A few years ago you never knew if Randy Johnson was gonna strike you out or throw it at your head. Guys like Joba and Papelbon are tough to beat, but intimidating? I don't think so. Which brings me to the next valid point:
i dont think there really is such thing as intimidation, its all mental or completely based on repuation and a veteran player shouldnt be intimidated by anyone.Like I said, Joba and Papelbon are gonna get a lot of guys out, but that doesn't mean that those batters were intimidated.
CubbyNick42
02/25/08, 06:58 PM
Paps maybe, but there's no way guys are intimidated by Joba yet. Not after two months in the bigs.
Killadelphia
02/25/08, 07:03 PM
Joba's intimidated by some bugs, but that about the only time intimidation and Joba should be used in the same sentence right now.
bigmike
02/25/08, 07:22 PM
If Joba is intimidating, then so is Joel Zumaya.
There really isn't an intimidating pitcher in the majors right now -- at least not on the par of Randy Johnson/Roger Clemens in their hey-day.
