MLB 2K8 vs MLB 08: The Show

I figured this would be as good of a time as any to create this thread since MLB 08: The Show has been released in some stores.

If you hated the 2K series in years past, just understand that they have totally reworked the hitting and pitching, so you may change your mind.

I haven't played either, so I'm hoping to rent them both before I make a decision. However, from the IGN review, it sounds like The Show is going to be really hard to beat.

Just post your thoughts if you've played either game or heard of people who have.

well, i'm going to buy mlb 2k8 because i don't have a ps3. But if i had a real choice i would hands down buy the show.
From what i've seen in this game it's the best of all the other The Shows' (which are by far the most realistic baseball games ever) plus what i think are better all around graphics than 2k8, from what i've seen with the screens.
I don't think 2k8 is a bad game though, it might be pretty close behind the show this year if they fix the fielding. Don't get me wrong mlb 2k8 is a crazy realistic LOOKING game, or it was last year, but it didn't feel realistic, from what i've seen the show is both, it's yet to be seen if 2k8 is both this year.
I won't know for another week or so though, i'm trying to finish my NBA 2k8 season (yes i play entire seasons) and am in the 2nd round of the playoffs right now. I just finished a great 1st round series against the Lakers that went to game 7, so i'm pretty happy with that for now.

yea, if you're looking for features other than a regular season it's the show all the way. my favirote thing is road to the show where you create a player and work him through the minors into the majors, it's fun as hell, and makes me wish i still had a ps2, or a ps3 i guess.

I initially thought I was going to get that because they totally reworked the pitching and hitting controls, and the graphics and animations are supposed to be better than The Show. Not much in terms of gameplay happens until the bottom of the 10th when there's a walkoff home run, but it gives you a great idea on how the game looks for those who are unsure which to buy.

There is one glitch found in the game that's shown in this video. In this situation, Belliard hits a 2-run walkoff homer to win the game, but the final score is shown as 1-0, so they don't count Belliard actually crossing the plate. I'm sure there will be some type of patch released to fix this problem.

The one thing that annoys me on the MLB 08: The Show demo is that all of the players pretty much pass through each other like they're ghosts. Not really a big deal, but it's annoying to see a guy slide into home plate and go right through the catcher.

the show is hands down way better than 2k8, unfortunately, us 360 owners are stuck with the 2k series. The audio hasn't changed a bit from 2k7, graphics are still the same, and some player models are still nowhere close to what the real player looks like.

with that being said I might pick it up today, because even how shitty the game was last year I still played over 400 games of baseball on it.

That's what I've read from pretty much everybody who has played 2K8. If you make even a slight mistake in the zone, the other team will go yard.

MLB 2K6 was a disaster.

I had to wait over a month for them to release a patch because they released a game that only worked for around 10% of the people who bought it.

You could never play a full game. Also, they've yet to fix the horrible # of home runs in games you play.

well after getting into it and reducing some AI power sliders the game is alright (MLB2k8). They updated the Rogers Centre. I can't stand Joe Morgan and John Miller in this game, they are so godamn repetitive and barely any new conversation from last year. The errors detection in the commentary is also awful

probably going to have the reduce the AI pitch strike because they throw strikes 90% of the time.

Custom playlist on PS3 = A+++++Exactly. I love being able to listen to Northstar and Midtown while in the menus on Road to the Show and online. RTTS is so goddamn addicting. The only reason why I'm not playing it right now is because my older brother discovered it and he's been playing for the past 4 hours.

My only problems with The Show is the fact that Rex Hudler is in it. I hate him so much. Why can't they go back to MLB 99 and get Vin Scully? It was a bit lackluster back then, but so was all announcing last decade, with Blades of Steel being the best: "With the pass!" I've been a fan of 2K Baseball dating back to World Series Baseball 2K1 on the Dreamcast, but after hearing all the poor reviews and whatnot I decided to get the Show. MVP 2005 was a great game indeed. One of my favorite features that all games nowadays lack is the ability to cancel a throw. That was so key. In MLB 08 it seems like it's the exact opposite. If there's a grounder hit to my shortstop I'll press circle to throw it to first, but if it gets by him and my left fielder fields it, he'll still throw it to first.

I've got like Hendrix, Four Year Strong, Brand New, a pretty good mix going to keep it interesting.

I just finished my first year at AA as a SP. 16-5, 3.26 ERA, 130ish K's, less than 40 BB. Led the league in ERA, K's, wins, and complete games (1).

i've only played 4 games and i'm already sick of it. I'm still getting hang of playing again, but i'm already pissed about the pauses in between EVERY batter introduction. The computer rails everything you throw at them, and somehow doesn't swing at anything even an inch oustide to be called a ball.
I still think the fielding sucks, i don't know how many times i've thrown home and not had a cutoff man there, while two guys are just looking at eacother at 2nd. it's fucking dumb.

there are very subtle improvments, but to me more noticable downgrades to this game from last year. i really really doubt i'll be buying it, and i'll probably just get a ps3 this summer and get the show.

I really didn't think I'd get into Road to the Show that much since I love doing dynasty modes, but that's all I've been playing.

I'm a pitcher for the 2009 Cardinals and I'm getting no run support at all. Pisses me off.

Have all of you made it as quickly as I did through the minors as a pitcher? I was in AA for a year on the Cardinals. I was traded to the Marlins in the middle of my 1st year, and started off in their AAA system my 2nd year before getting a call up to the Majors within a month. I've been up ever since.

MLB 08: The Show definitely needs some tweaks, but I think this is probably the best baseball game I've ever played. I loved the MVP series too.

I'm like half way through my first year still. I'm a Double-A pitcher in the Royals Organization (started with them) and just started the Double-A All Star game for the North Division of the Texas League. It's a fun mode, for sure.

Speaking of the minor leagues in that: Does anyone know a list of what minor leaguers are the top prospects? like what kid is supposed to be Johnny Cueto or Clayton Kershaw? Is Rick Porcello in the game? I glanced through the teams minor leagues a couple of times but ages and height/weight didn't really match up.

I had a no-hitter going into the 9th inning against the Dodgers with 1 out to complete it, and Rafael Furcal got a base hit to right field to break it up. I was so damn annoyed lol

I looked through the minor league system for the Cardinals and couldn't find any that matched up. I'm not sure they added any real prospects and changed the names.

There are roster updates out there, but I'm not sure if they have prospects either.

Yeah, Rick Ankiel kit a bloop single and Soriano didn't dive. My friend was shocked because I think he wanted to see me throw it.

I also versed my friend with King Felix. I pitched him 13 2/3 innings because i just kept striking out people with his power curve/slider. Then got ejected and lost 1-0.

Yeah, it's available for PS2. It's Sony exclusive.

I've only played The Show, but from pretty much everything I've read, they say The Show is a lot better in terms of gameplay. I've heard different opinions on each dynasty mode, but 'Road to the Show' is a unique feature that 2K8 doesn't have.

A couple things that annoy me are that they incorrectly give pitchers earned runs on some errors, and players continually run through each other as if they're not there. Also, they need to tweak the foul ball percentage on hitters just a tad, because it seems to me that there are far too many foul balls, which increase pitch counts. They might have that listed on the sliders in the option menu, but I haven't looked yet.

yeah, the foul balls suck when you're trying to reach an innings limit in road to the show for a set number of series and you can't go longer than 4/5 due to all the foul balls. I cannot believe there is no prospect list for the show, anywhere, at all. this is ridiculous.
