it had to come sooner or later, but this has to be rough for Packers fans.
i dont know if I'd be nostalgic/sad or downright angry at him right now.
LeftWideOpen
03/04/08, 07:39 AM
on a side note, the NFC North in 2008 will be the worst division of all-time.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 07:41 AM
You can't be mad at Favre. I'm sad that he is retiring. But he is 38, he has done everything a quarterback can possibly do in the league. I don't feel feelings right now.
LeftWideOpen
03/04/08, 07:45 AM
Yeah my initial reaction is mixed. I think his career needs to be celebrated as he was one of the best QB's this game has ever seen, but its also in the back of my head that he expected everything to be served to him on a silver platter this offseason and set the team back by waiting until now.
LeftWideOpen
03/04/08, 07:51 AM
Golic is echoing my sentiments exactly right now : there will be a time to celebrate his career but the immediate impact is that it sounds like Favre said "i'm taking my ball and going home" because he didnt get his way.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 07:53 AM
He was just speculating, I doubt that's the reason. If it was the reason, he would have retired last year.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 07:55 AM
I hope he doesn't change his mind though, we don't need that ridiculousness.

03/04/08, 08:02 AM
like LWO said - it had to happen sometime and as much as you'd like to think so, the dude can't play forever. 17 seasons is a hell of a run.
we are cured
03/04/08, 08:04 AM
we know at least one guy is happy about this...aaron rodgers

03/04/08, 08:06 AM
I can't believe the Vikings might be the preseason favorite to win the division w/ Tavaris Jackson at QB.
what a bad division. vince young might even be able to win in this division.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 08:08 AM
Packers defense and offense are still heads and shoulders above the other teams in that division.
tacosforcharles
03/04/08, 08:09 AM
Heard this right when I got up...
Absolutely depressing.
But he was a hell of a man, he's been starting QB in Green Bay and hasn't missed a start since, well, I was born. He will be missed.

Here we go, hahahahaha.
Sad to see him go, really wanted one more season out of him. The Packers will still be a good team next year though IMO, not great, but good.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 08:12 AM
Well, now Favre's agent is saying all sorts of crap now. I wish Favre would have a press conference before rumors get crazy. ugh, this is just going to end so disappointing.

Packers defense and offense are still heads and shoulders above the other teams in that division.
defensively, yes. but an offense led by aaron rodgers can't be described as head and shoulders above the rest of the division.
the funny part is that jon kitna is now the best QB in the division.
Who would have ever thought this guy:
http://www.clevelandleader.com/files/KitnaHalloween.jpg
would be described the best at anything?
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 08:14 AM
So Favre's agent is saying that Favre wanted to come back but felt that the Packers didn't want him back. WTF? I don't think I can buy that. What is going on? Why does a simple retirement have to turn out so shitty? Wisconsin sports is going to be the end of me.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 08:15 AM
If Rodgers can play consistently like he did against Dallas last year, we'll be fine. If he can throw good short passes, he'll be fine. Remember, the Packers WR's are the best at YAC.
LeftWideOpen
03/04/08, 08:16 AM
i think that could be an agent spinning "if they wanted him back, they would have took his wishes into account".
the packers wouldnt have let favre draw things out this long if they didnt want him back. they could have used the cap space while viable FA's were still available.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 08:19 AM
You're probably right, this is why I hate agents. He should just keep his fuckin mouth shut.

Colin Cowherd, while I like him, is annoying me. He is saying that Favre isn't the type of guy to just stay at home. That Favre will be golfing, going to parties, and will be an analyst before long. Uhhh, no.

03/04/08, 08:26 AM
This is crazy stuff. He's been the quarterback of my favorite team basically my entire life, but I guess he had to retire sometime. I think it's funny how he came back when nobody thought he would, and now that everyone expected him to come back, he retired.

03/04/08, 08:32 AM
I'm really surprised Favre decided to retire considering his last play (and really, last game) with the Packers ended on such a disappointing note. They did have a hell of a season; luckily, the NFC North is so mediocre that even without Favre, the Pack have a chance.

Where do you think Brett will be doing analysis in a year or two.
I think NBC's full with Costas and crew.
I'm going to say that FOX will take him due to them being the NFC channel.

According to Mortensen, Favre acknowledged that he felt he could play another year.
"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre said.
"If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna (his wife) and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl. To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful," Favre said in the message.
"I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl and honestly the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. "

I was laying in bed this morning and my mom had the Green Bay sports show on. I could faintly hear it but by no means was paying attention. I heard something like "breaking news, reports are coming in that Brett Favre will not return to play another year." I sprung out of bed and didn't even have to ask...I could tell what I heard was true. My mom was already on the phone with my dad at work...this is just a sad day. Like a death in the family. He will be dearly missed.

It's truly a sad day for Packer nation. He's been the starting QB for my team since I was born practically and I'll be damned if I don't miss him already.
Still, the Pack oughta be a fine. A step back from last year? Maybe, but if Rodgers has half a brain he can run that offense. After Brees left San Diego, Rivers filled in just fine right? Same concept.
It's sad to see him go, but at the same time I was such a huge Marino fan growing up that I've always kind of resented him sticking around for so long breaking Dan's records.

I don't know if I agree. I've always been a Viking fan, and while I love that fact that he won't be tearing us apart anymore, I'm still kind of sad to see him go. Sometimes you can't help to cheer for the guy. I hate him against the Vikings, but I love him against anyone else.

first off, for the people lol'ing about his last pass being an int, who cares? so few people get to go out on positive notes, and even fewer go out on top. when it's looked back upon, his final season will be remembered for breaking all the records he broke during the season and for leading a team that nobody expected anything of to a 13-3 record. by the time he's giving his induction speech, nobody will even remember that one pass.
secondly, green bay is still clearly the team to beat in that division. yes, there's a gigantic step down at the qb, but aaron rodgers is the perfect type of qb for mccarthy's type of offense. he may not end up being a great qb, but he's going to be a great fit. toss in the ridiculously good receiving corps and ryan grant for a full season, and that offense will still be very effective.
thirdly, this sucks. total bummer.

This is, great/sad news at the same time.
-Sad that one of the best is leaving the game of NFL, one could consider him a face for America.
-Also sad that GB won't have the guy who was throwing 80 yard touchdown passes off his back foot either in the 4th quarter or overtime to win them a good amount of games they probably would have lost without him.
-Good news here is that this is the perfect and best season for Rodgers to develop. Let's face it he will be facing 3 teams, he plays twice, in his division next season that will be absolutely garbage.
The Bears have 0 WRs, a terrible quarterback and bad offense all around. Free agency killed them. GB's defense will take care of them Rodgers could play against them blindfolded and still win at this point.
The lions fell off last season and went 1-7 down the stretch of the last 8 games. I expect that to carry over with little impact/change they are making. They also got blown out by some really bad teams. GB should have no trouble walking all over them with the emergence of Ryan Grant in a full season
And the vikings, they are going no where with Jackson at QB, not to mention a weak secondary that even I could pick apart as quarterback. Rodgers should have no problem here.
I could see GB+Rodgers as a possibility of going undefeated in their division next season, sneaking by a couple AFC teams and beating some other middle of the road NFC teams and still being a top team coming out of the Conference. I still say they get 10/11 wins easy.
Just saying if I was a Pack fan going into next season I would have all the confidence in the world I still have a top team in a NFC that is only getting weaker. Some of those teams look like they are going backwards with the players being released and the mediocre out there getting big contracts because FA is depleted.
Scott Weber
03/04/08, 01:13 PM
I don't think the NFC is getting worse, there has been several big names heading to that conference and not many leaving.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 01:15 PM
I would say the Packers will get 8-10 wins, probably go 5-1/4-2 in the North. They play Dallas and Indianapolis at Lambeau and have to play AT Jacksonville, Tennessee, and Seattle (the hardest place to play at on the road). It'll be an interesting season.
Drew Beringer
03/04/08, 01:16 PM
The Eagles have gotten better, Seattle will be a force like always, and the Giants and Cowboys will be good. With the loss of Favre, the Packers go from being one of the top 3 teams in the NFC back to the middle of the pack.
The Bears might be the worst team in football next year. You have Rex and Orton at QB and you just got rid of Muhammed and Berrian and there arent that many good receivers left in Free Agency. You have shitty QBs and you lose two of their biggest targets, youre absolutely fucked.

Yea true, but say Favre were to go play for another team for 2 seasons and retire, I think it would taint his legacy in Green Bay a bit.
the Bears, Lions and Vikings are just going to be downright bad though, which will take tons of pressure of Rodgers they should and will be easy wins for him and its a bonus they are all division teams.
The Eagles on paper look to be improving making some good moves, Dallas, the Giants and Seattle all will be top tier. But then you have your hype teams Saints, 49ers, Redskins... people expect these teams to do good and all this offseason nonsense behind them, but they still have a shot to suck ass once the season starts. But people will blow them up that they will be good every year. I think the Pack will be fine.

If he pulls a Jordan my emotions will be strewn about.
Sad day.
He better not pull a Jordan. I'm still mad that Jordan decided to come back.

the Bears, Lions and Vikings are just going to be downright bad though, which will take tons of pressure of Rodgers they should and will be easy wins for him and its a bonus they are all division teams.
Well, yeah the Niners won't be good and neither will the Redskins, a team that caught fire at the right time last year. Packers will pull in the 4 seed in the NFC next year.
lol he wins one super bowl drew and you totally forget what he did, thats ignant

I need to buy a Favre jersey. I've had many over the years but they are all too small.
I still have mine from about 5th grade. I tried it on during the playoffs this year, but sadly it is too small.

Comparing Brett Favre :: Aaron Rodgers with Drew Brees (in SD) :: Phillip Rivers might be the worst analogy i have ever seen in my entire life.
*Sigh* I knew someone would interpret this the wrong way. So here's my defense. Why the hell not? Both teams were led by very talented QBs the year of their departure. Brees put up great numbers and led his team to a 12-4 record. Favre put up great numbers and led his team to a 13-3 record. Brees left, Rivers inherited a deep and talented team and almost led the team back to the play-offs the next season while putting up only average numbers because he had good talent around him. Now Aaron Rodgers inherits a huge talent pool in Green Bay. Explain to me why this doesn't work now?

We have a developing story from the news page: "Warren Moon is a better quarterback than Tom Brady, In fact Tom Brady is not in the Top 10 of greatest quarterbacks ever"
why do so many think Warren Moon was a god?
Was it that splitseconds guy again? lol

I think he meant it was a bad analogy because Brees has never in his career been on the same level as Favre, and he only had someone like 2 or 3 good years in SD, the rest were average.
And Rivers did lead the Chargers to the playoffs in his first year. They were 14-2 and were the first seed in the AFC.
