yeah man next Wednesday. I'm so pumped and the preview they've been showing for it on comedy central makes the episode look. I stopped watching south park for the longest but for some reason i got back into it like 2years ago and i've been hooked again ever since then.

I'm looking forward to it but South Park hasn't been hysterically funny since season 8.

The show jumped the shark when Mr. Garrison had the sex change.

Season 9 was good but had more than a few not-so-funny episodes. Season 10 was surprisingly mediocre. Season 11 was pretty awful. I can't stand the zombie episode at all. It just seemed like its become a weekly pop-culture reference show now.

Eh I disagree. I think there is a huge difference between pop-culture references and social commentary. Family Guy = pop-culture references, South Park = social commentary.

and a lot of the better episodes, mecha streissand and scott tenorman for instance, weren't topical at all

maybe, but the social commentary's gotten unfunny and predictable lately. I saw the Michael Richards episode coming from a mile away, and the way they did it really wasn't that great at all.

hahaha yeah very true, i guess you could go so far back as to the first season for his homosexual tendencies when he was playing tea party in cartman's moms is a dirty slut. In this season though they're tearing cartman apart. First him putting butter's weenier in his mouth, then him telling everyone hiim and his cousin have touched each other's penises then this. It's totally fucked up. i can't wait for part two imagination land. Last night's episode was amazing.

I have to agree that their earlier seasons were some of the funniest, but if you have been watching the latest seasons, it had some of the funniest South Park episodes ever. The WoW episode was just brilliant and i mean, Herion Hero, who cant laugh at that. It seems to me that South Park is just the better comedy. Family Guy is funny because of the little 15 second breaks they have in which completley random things are said, it is funny, but its just kinda there. It doesnt have the true story comedy that South Park has.

Exactly. All there is to remember about Family Guy is some random shit that happens. Nothing within the actual plot is funny. So it probably isn't even possible to remember which specific episode a given funny random shit scene happened in.

South Park > Family Guy in any/every way possible.

Kif

I agree with him. Season 10 and 11 were trash. You knew what was going to happen for the most part, and the Kyle/Cartman stuff just isn't funny anymore. Save for a few episodes (The WoW and 24 episodes were classics), it's been really bad compared to what they've done in the past.

Scott Weber
12/20/07, 12:45 AM
Political South Park is dumb and gets too much credit for being intelligent. Episodes about stupid stuff like video games or other TV shows/actors/movies are hilarious. Family Guy used to be great, is now just ok. Still has major laugh moments in it. Hard to choose, I just think SP is really, really overrated for being intelligent and biting social commentary sometimes when all Matt and Trey do is watch the news and make an episode exactly about it, but with a bunch of fart jokes and then people see it as poking fun of a serious situation and how ridiculous it is, which is what they're doing, but it's not smart. It's just...surface level stuff. Both are funny shows. That's all I can say.

How is it genius to take a popular video game and write an episode about it, comparing it to being a real rockstar? How is that genius? It's FUNNY, but genius? Come on. Matt and Trey get wayyyyyyyyyyy too much credit.

Scott Weber
12/20/07, 09:28 AM
For me, it is stupid to immediately label a show that is socially relevant as "so smart" and "genius" and how they are revolutionary. Just because the material is topical doesn't mean it has depth. The themes and depth to South Park is very thin, shallow, surface level. True genius comedic writing comes from Larry David, or Mitchell Hurwitz, cyclical ironic humor. I just really feel strongly about this...South Park gets too much credit for it's shock value and topical humor.

that's not what the episode was about. it was about the complete and undeniable pointlessness of games like guitar hero. and then taking that concept to the next level and exagerating it to the point where people would actually feel like their life is over because of it. the heroin hero game is essentially EXACTLY the same as guitar hero. pressing a button at a particular time in order to achieve zero.

and then if you actually have a conscience you would find something human and familiar in watching randy come down and try to play it in just his pants.

anyone who thinks the first four seasons of south park are better than the ones proceeding them are fools.

just to say that i agree with larry david and ironic humour being smart. but that doesn't mean that south park is just shock value and topical humour. at it's heart, it's meant to be a fun show but you can easily take the ideas away and see a more political side.

for instance, the manbearpig episode alluding to global warming and when the terrorists attack our imaginations in the imaginationland trilogy, it's clever stuff sometimes.

but i'm not disagreeing that larry david and shows like peepshow and spaced (bear with me, i'm english) aren't clever. they are. but south park is/was revolutionary and smart also.

...You are reading too deep into it. Everyone knows video games are pointless and for fun, individual achievements. I don't need a show to point out that trying to get a high score in a game means nothing. And you are making that up about Heroin Hero. The point of that was that they were wasting away their lives because stan (or kyle, can't remember) couldn't handle the pressure of being in a "band" and having to produce. There was no talk of any..button hitting. Except to try and grab the dragon? That is not deep comedy. I see the appeal - that episode was hilarious - but when people think Matt and Trey are social commentary gods I just sit back and say "are you serious?" I wish people could just say that it's funny because it talks about topical events that are funny at the time, and that's that. But people get carried away.

surely the fact that i took those ideas and thoughts away from that episode is tantamount to the social commentary they have put forth?

how can i MAKE up what i took from an episode?

our society isn't so far removed from actually having a game where you are a drug addict chasing a dragon. it's another form of addiction. and all of these thoughts, ethics and ideas from a toilet humour cartoon?

you can still have fun and gross out comedy that instills interesting debate into people. i wouldn't say they're social commentary gods, but i tend to ignore a lot of people on these boards. yr reply however, was quite eloquent, so i thought i'd try and show you some appeal, of which you already say you see, so fair enough!

How is it genius to take a popular video game and write an episode about it, comparing it to being a real rockstar? How is that genius? It's FUNNY, but genius? Come on. Matt and Trey get wayyyyyyyyyyy too much credit.

The reason why they get some much credit, is because they are able to produce the "surface level stuff" better than anyone else can. They are able to take this type of comedy and turn it into something that a rare few can do now a days. I do think you have a point in saying that its not genius stuff, but it still has smarts too it. I mean, judging from what other people said, there are many different things that many different people get out of an episode of South Park. In my opinion, if someone is able to create that effect from a show, then there has to be a certain level of smarts about the show.

It may not be brilliant and complete genius comedy, but it deffinatly is smart comedy.

South Park of course. I'll have to jump back and agree with some earlier statements that South Park has been increasingly bad since season 9. It's almost impossible for me to sit through the new episodes. Now, the Succubus episode and spontaneous combustion episodes.... that's where that show was really on top!

hahaha wow.

I've been watching since the first season and I don't think you can be more wrong. The humour in the earlier seasons relied way too much on profanity and repetitive character traits (kenny dying, stan puking, cartman's one liners) to get some cheap laughs. Don't get me wrong, it was hilarious all through middle school but there's no way the show would still be on the air if they still did that.

That being said, Family Guy isn't even on the same level as South Park.

I just HATE the new animation tyle. I think the crappy look they had really added to the humor. The fat that they don't even sound like the same characters anymore really irritates me. Eh, bottom line is I think the show's best moments is behind it but I still think it's better than A LOT of s hit on TV today. Also, I think your comment about it not being on TV today if it was still like it used to be is wrong. It's still doing tons of shit humor, just not in a way that is as funny as it once was. Just look at the damn episode where Stan's dad took the biggest shit in history. How is that any different than making dirty jokes for cheap laughs?

well the who can take a bigger shit episode, was making fun of Bono, and the shit story was just the top layer but the real genius was in how they made fun of bono and why he does all these nice things and gets awards is because he's a piece of shit (literally) and he can't stand being number 2 (taking a shit) so he has to be number 1 in everything.. the show was a lot deeper than stan's dad trying to have the biggest shit in the world.

Ha, I dunno, I didn't fnd that to be deep. Sure, Bono is a douche, but I think South Park has been mixing shit humor and ridiculing celebrities from the start. Look at season 2 when mr Hankey flooded the w hole town with shit to get rid of the film festival crowd. Same thing right there, just funnier(in my opinion). That was almost 10 years ago, and they are doing similar things still.

That was merely one example. To me, it's not deep AT ALL or insightful. It's just funny, shit humor to me and it has been almost from the start. Bottom line is I don't think it is as funny as it used to be. I could provide plenty of examples of all this stuff, but I just don't see the point in getting into it; it's all just opinon based anyway. I agree with Scott; people are giving it way too much praise. I absolutely love the show, but I think people are going a little overboard with it.

South Park is just about my favorite show on television and I loved the episode last week. The repetition of the line "I'm not just sure, I'm HIV positive" was laugh out loud every time, and the speech Kyle had about how the situation was not funny, really referring to how the story of the show shouldn't really be funny was great. I really like it whenever Matt and Trey poke fun at themselves, like in Cartoon Wars.

they were making fun of how much money has been used on aids research so far, when not as much progress as would be expected has been seen yet. so it's like all that money was a waste and might as well have just been injected into the patients.

it's not for me

has anyone else felt like none of the episodes have been terrible this season but also none were great?

They're all in the 6 to 8 out of 10 range.

I think the Brittney Spears episode was possibly the worst episode of south park ever.

I thought a few episodes this season (Major Boobage, Canada on Strike) were incredible, while some like the Britney Spears episode and last Wednesday's were pretty good, but not excellent. South Park is still by far and away just about the best thing on television though.

Was the most recent episode a parody of Stand and Deliver? I remember watching that movie in AP Calculus my senior year in high school.

It absolutely was. I watched it in my AP Stat class senior year too.

We watched And the Band Played On in AP Stat too. I don't really remember why, but it was better than normal class.

tonight's episode (the internet) was absolutely awful. i barely chuckled and even that was forced, it was entirely predictable.

this season has been an overall disappointment.

I cried during the ectoplasm part. I don't know what you're talking about. Stan's dad and his obsession with internet porn was hysterical. Beastiality click click.

The ectoplasm will never get old for me. It's going into my daily vocabulary. Just today during class, my friend says to me, "Jess, I'm going to ectoplasm all over your face." Good stuff.

Any episode focusing majorly on Randy Marsh is good in my book. The Internet episode didn't have a lot of laugh out loud moments, minus the ectoplasm, but it did have a lot of chuckling. Randy Marsh is the best character on the show.

This was probably only the third or fourth best episode of the season so far but it was still fairly good and like other people said the ectoplasm thing was great.

You know what's funny? About a week ago, I saw a repeat of the "Guitar Queer-O" episode, which makes fun of GH on all sides and corners, and as irony would have it, after the opening credits I saw that "This episode of South Park is sponsored by Guitar Hero: Aerosmith". Oh, sweet irony.

My friend's dad looks exactly like Randy Marsh. Down to the black mustache and the beer in hand. It's awesome.
