i love mindfucks (a movie that makes you say "wow that shit just fucked my mind"). examples: donnie darko, the fountain, primer, eternal sunshine, etc. so i was wondering if anyone out there could recommend me some mindfucks.

Momento, Usual Suspects, From Dusk til Dawn (I still have no fucking clue what happened at the end, I refuse to watch it because it scared the shit out me the first time)

Yes, definitely, Lucky Number Slevin (entitled The Wrong Man in Australia and other countries) is a great one for those who love a good plot twist. The Prestige is excellent too, although heaps of people would have already seen it. Also, if you liked Donnie Darko, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in The Invisible. It was directed by the guys behind The Sixth Sense, so if you consider that a good one than you might want to check that one out. Hot Fuzz has a pretty good twist too, but thats more of an action/satirical comedy than a thriller.

Yes the Prestige is excellent. Great film with a great twist that doesn't feel like a cop out.

Hot Fuzz is a comedy, not really a mindfuck. And it isn't even that good. There are better British comedians around than Pegg and Wright.

I didn't feel The Invisible was a good movie whatsoever. The trailer was extremely misleading about the premise of the movie and there was little to no suspense during the entire movie. I also called the ending from miles away.

I agree. Movies with twists are cool, but I wouldnt call them mindfucks. When I think of mindfucks, I think of movies that I have to actually sit down and think about and have a good brainstorming session that usually just leaves me more tangled up in the mess that movie that the movie intended for me to be in than before. But that doesnt mean it cant have a twist too. For example, when I saw The Sixth Sense in 7th grade it really kind of messed with for a while. I would just sit there and think, "Am I dead? How would I know if Im dead? How did I die?" But I was only in 7th grade, and I have seen far more complicated movies since then, I just think The Sixth Sense was the first movie to give me that feeling that a mindfuck usually leaves me with.

i disagree...had a variety of elements to it. i don't think it could be classified as a mind fuck cause you kind of know whats going on.

mind fucks are movies like requiem of a dream when you feel like you just did a bunch of heroine and are depressed at the end of the movie. and make look back on the movie with your own questions.

donnie darko is not over rated, its a trendy cult movie (yes oxy moron i know) in fact when i watched it was just from word of mouth, and then i had to watch again...i just didn't understand. it wasn't until the directors cut came out and i had done some research on the movie that i began to understand the smaller things. if you know what the director was going for with the story of the movie its not over rated, its just that such smalll amount of people actually get the movie and what kind of story that richard kelly was trying to tell.

The worst mindfucks are from films you know are gonna try to pull a fast one on you and it all winds up being lame and predictable. Those seem to be coming out a lot recently, but every once in awhile, you manage to score a movie that does everything properly. Flightplan was like that, and in the end ... it was just like, "What?" Same with Next, the Nicolas Cage film from last spring.

I agree, it was definately a good mindfuck movie but any of Chuck Palahniuk's books would make similarly great movies. Just his stying equates to what can be turned into an awesome movie. Also, Edward Norton played the role phenomenally so you can't complain about that.

Certainly not all inclusive, but a few that twisted my noggin around in one way or another. I think it's important to note that some of the following probably wouldn't meet a lot of people's definitions of mindfucks, but they fit mine. But i saw that others feel as I do that a mindfuck isn't just a plot twist or two at the end. To me, it's something that gets in your head and makes you see the world a different way - even if you didn't enjoy the change. Enough diatribe . . .

Run Lola Run
Sleuth (1972 - Don't rightly know about 2007

Gattaca is a movie that got into my head for a long time. Of all the post-apocalyptic thrillers out there that people view as inevitable, Gattaca is pre-apocalyptic and less of an eventuality and more of a now. It made me think - probably too much - about the repercussions of a truly genetically aware society. And like I said, it made me see the world in a different way - at least for a while.

Amelie is much the same, though it made the list because I was talking to my old girlfriend on the phone while making the list and she insisted. I can see it, but only from a particular female perspective.

The Big Lebowski isn't that much of a stretch. The symbolism is there if you look for it (don't look for it, it'll ruin a great pothead movie). It's all about what you believe in. Are you "the dude" or is someone else? Do you bowl on Shomer Shabbos? Are you a nihilist? Would you bowl against Jesus?

Alright, you got me. I'm full of shit. I was looking through my old Blockbuster VHS stack of Previously viewed $4.99 movies when I made the list. I renounce Gattaca AND Amelie as mindfuck movies, but you gotta give me Lebowski.

So, Jess - have you already posted Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Is Hitchhiker's Guide a mindfuck movie?

No, that was supposed to be a joke. Though I did think long and hard about the possibility of mice as more advanced life forms sent to be part of the Earth's operational matrix. Meh - the book was better.
