why does MTV always come up as a main source of music for 'punks' alike?? ALL THE BANDS ARE WATERED DOWN AND CRUSHED. MTV is the place that bands go to ruin every lsat drop of musical talent they have. mtv must go.

Please, this argument is so tired and Stoopitgirl12, or whatever your name is (not even bother to look back), you really are living up to your nick. MTV is a television network. Re-read that sentence if you need to, I'll wait. <waits a few minutes> Ok, so moving on, networks need to make money, that's what the entertainment business is about. Now, with television, ratings is what makes you money. High ratings, lots of advertisers want to place ads in the middle of your shows. Wait a minute? So, because most Americans are mindless sheep that watch the stupid programming and like to stay up with the trends, a lot of people watch the shows, MTV can make tons of money from advertisers and, look out, the network is succesful. In terms of them being a succesful TV network, they're doing a great job. The fact that internet tools like us will sit and bitch about it for days on end also proves that they're doing a great job. Whether you think the network is good or bad is up to you, but please, think before you speak. And also think about this: IF THERE WERE NO SUCH THING AS "TRENDS" OR MAINSTREAM MUSIC THAN HOW WOULD ALL YOU "PUNK" AND "EMO" KIDS FEEL COOL? Hmmm, oh wait, you wouldn't because you'd be no different than anyone else (not that wearing a studded belt and a NOFX shirt really makes you an individual anyways, but thats besides the point). And another thing, how does MTV ruin a band? If you liked the band once, you should always like them, sure you might get tired of hearing the songs, but if you dislike a band because they get onto MTV you are no better off than those who only like bands who are on MTV.

Y'know the more I read these 'I hate MTV' threads I keep thinking the US got the shit MTV and us english folk got the good shit. TRL is on for 1 hour a day, that's all. For the other 23 hour period it's all Jackass, Dirty Sanchez, Jammed and Cribs with the odd bit of music inbetween breaks (commericals) etc etc. Unless that's what you consider shit? Then again it's always re-played over and over and over and over but god dammit Johnny Knoxville is fuckin hot...

i was recently informed that you get the exact same shit there when i was talking to a friend i have there about long island and he mentioned rich girls and i said "they air that there?" and he said "yeah we have the exact same show they air in america"

so trl is on at like 10 right? if its live there...

I don't care for the music on MTV, I may like one song here and their. But I can't stand any TV shows they have unless it be something like "Choose or Loose" or if they have some social commentary, but if it's anything else - I don't care to much for it.

Since hating MTV is the popular thing to do shouldn't all the punk rockers be loving it?

As annoying as it may seem doesn't everyone have the right to discover new music? What bad are they doing by falling in love with bands like SOTY? They allowing the band to make more money right? Isn't that what you want to happen for a band you love, for them to make a loving doing something that they love and what pleases you?

i actually watch mtv, for my daily dose of trash and some of the songs are pretty catchy, but i hate them because they are so damn shallow. they hear a catchy song, play the hell out of it , and then drop it as soon as it gets old and the britney fans go back to britney. they don't look at how musically talented a band is, or how good their lyrics are. if a song will sell, they'll play it, because it's a capitalist society we live in m'dears.

That's how the music industry works. Repeat, Music BUSINESS (key word there).

How are record executive's going to pay off their Lexus bills if they have to spend time trying to decipher how musically talented a band is? Also, how "musically talented" a band may be is objective, so musically talented to me might be different than musically talented to you.

mtv just doesn't interest me. except for the real world. i love the real world.
the only two shows i watch are i love the 80's and the real world, other than that, tv sucks.

Comedy Central makes TV good.

That and - The Discovery Channel, C-Span, CNN, TLC and Cartoon Network.

How can you say TV sucks, well if you watch FOX news network than it does.

boysdontcry
03/28/04, 08:55 AM
ok, cartoon network and comedy central are really good channels. i don't watch the news anymore because it's all the same shit now. i could watch the news once a month and be up on current events. yeah and i don't watch TLC because i'm not a big trading spaces fan.

tv is kind of ok.

SOTY fits right in the MTV rotation. That band is poppy, accessible, and they'll change with the trends to make a buck.

MTV can ruin a band too. Look at Incubus. They get a little fame with Drive and their next album has a bunch of songs like it. They got real popular with that album. MTV can easily decide a band's future. A band gets into the rotation, people start liking them, MTV pushes them. When it comes time for the next release, they're going to have a record label breathing down their back about making a successful follow-up that the mainstream kids will want to eat up.

I dislike MTV because they play entirely too much rap. I always see the Rap Countdown or other hip hop shows everytime I check to see what's on MTV2. I also hate the way they mix it up on both stations. One rock song. One pop song. one rap song. That's why I like Fuse....they give each genre of music it's own time...
