Yeah, 5 years ago I saw Autopilot Off headline over Fall Out Boy and that was my first time seeing fob. I fell in love with them and TTTYG I saw them 5 times that year. It was definitely a fun time for music. Saw them at the Continental and Empress ballroom, I remember the first time they sold out knitting factory I thought that was mind boggling. Hahaha, oh man.

I was a Once Nothing fan before they signed to Solid State, so I guess that counts. Sort of. Oh, and growing up in the CCM market, I owned some Relient K and Switchfoot long before they hit the major labels. So sure, whatever.

I grew up in the insane scene of NJ and got to see basically every signed band before they got signed. Northern Jersey was like a breeding ground for Drive-Thru bands back then. The Starting Line, Hidden in Plain View, Face First(which went on to become Houston Calls), Madison, Midtown, Senses Fail, The Early November...I saw all these bands in churches, VFW Halls, you name it. Crazy how things change and bands get snatched up. Also got to see Saves the Day, Catch 22 and Thursday before they all got huge. What a crazy time for music

I used to go to the Fall Out Boy shows five or six years ago, when they were opening for bands and nobody would even show up for their sets. It's amazing to see how much things have changed.

Also grew up in North Jersey, went to school with Ben from Armor For Sleep, Gabe from Midtown, and Evan and Matt from Steel Train. All of them minus Gabe were in a high school band together called Random Task, I still have their cds, check the B-Sides thread to hear them. Also got to see Panic At the Disco open on the Acceptance headlining tour, with Cartel, Augustana and The Receiving End of Sirens. This was when no one knew panic at all, pretty cool.

i liked fall out boy when all they had was an ep....
...yellowcard played at my high school before i was even in high school
...i knew of MCR and really liked the used before the whole big thing blew up with the two of them
...NFG nothing gold can stay? classic
...who remembers the first senses fail ep?
...idk if matchbook romance is 'big' but theyre from nearby and i had theyre first cd the week it came out
...i fell in love with coheed like 4 years ago when second stage came out...
....i saw hot rod circuit in middle school open for NFG and good charlotte
...anyone whos anyone knew tbs when 'your so last summer' came out and it was the hottest shit to hit the cd player since hidden in plain views ep (which i had in middle school too)
but the best by far is paramore....i saw them at this shitty place called the empress like 4 or 5 years ago and there were literally my friends and 7 other ppl in the place..haley was still rocking the fuck out and i was like 'damn shes fine' lol..i bought theyre shirt and still have it
...also i chilled with just surrender when they were 'a second chance' and played at the local VFW while they were still in high school...i bought theyre ep from them and turned out they used the same 6 recordings on their first cd, along with some new songs after they changed theyre name

same with straylight run, knew them when they were only a demos on their website band, but I don't know if they count as "big" or not.

There are the ones that people have already mentioned like FOB, NFG, Panic, All American Rejects, Yellowcard, and many others. The one that I am most proud of is The Matches. I booked them for my high school homecoming rally when they were still The Locals. I know they aren't huge mainstream wise, but they sure have come a long way.

Yeah it was 5 years ago on May 16th I still have the ticket stub. They actually played there again that same year in June and I went again haha. That venue was so shitty but it has some of the best memories in it.

Yeah, right around the time TTTYG started picking up steam, I saw Fall Out Boy open for Punchline in Tokyo. Incredible show--still one of the best I've ever been to.
Afterwards, the guys seemed really nice, but totally out of their element. Especially Patrick. Stood outside the venue having the kind of conversation one might have waiting in line at the DMV.
Amusing.

cant say that i have
i havent been into music long enough but im sure someday ill be able to tell people that "i saw ____ when they opened for _______ way back when" and then theyll all go "mannnn i wish i knew them then"
its silly but thats how it goes and i dont want it to change
i find it a little odd how many people say they listened to fob before they made it big
kinda sounds like they were big before they were big

haha i like this poll. i hate to sound like i'm "bragging" or whatever but i like reading these stories and such.
i saw FOB before they were "big" in a nightclub around here for fueled by ramen tour 05. it was so fun and whenever i think about it its happy memories...pete hung from the ceiling and jumped into the crowd. im not too much of a fan like i was back then but i really loved them alot....haha. hmm lets see, i saw jacks mannequin right when they were getting started, i'm pretty sure it was the first time they ever came to michigan and they played in a small venue in front of like 100 kids. hm...something corporate....in like 04 or 05 they weren't as big back then but im sure they are pretty popular now cause of jacks....lets see. i was one of the few who knew who panic were at nintendo fusion 05...i think it was one of the first times they came to michigan... also saw hellogoodbye a bunch of times when all they had was their EP and a few random songs...back when their shows and music was actually fun....haha

I saw coheed in a room with 100 person capacity w/ brandtson and rocking horse winner.
saw avenged sevenfold with 40 kids...
to name a few...
all time low went to my high school, their first bassist is one of my bestest friends.
i remember when they werent even the best (or most popular) band at my school

When My Chemical Romance opened for Finch, the Used, and Lovedrug in 2003.
and
When my high school pop punk band played a small show at a place in Columbus, OH called Midgard (basically a comic shop with a small music venue attached) and we opened for for Fall Out Boy and Punchline. I had never even heard of either bands before. I believe it was 2002 or 2003, right after take this to your grave and major motion picture were released. Punchline became one of my favorite bands soon after, and fall out boy just sat in the corner of the comic shop and did not say anything at all. Good times.
and I saw Relient K countless times between 2003-2005 cause that's what pop punk fans in Ohio used to do.

THE FUCKING BERLIN PROJECT, SENSES FAIL, THE Early November
The berlin project, they was great, i remember eating Taco Bell, discussing THE LORDS OF SEMEN, and getting stoned, such a solid time, now they are GENE the Werewolf. I saw senses fail on their first national tour, i remember walking up to their van, asking dave if he had a lighter, then asking him if they would like to embark on some toking, then getting in their van and watching their video for 'Bloody Romance' which they had gotten themselves just days before, and then being like dude, put me on the guest list. I also remember seeing TEN on tour with allister and the Reunion show, at the time they didnt even have an album out, but they had already played the warped tour, yeah that was 02, Anyways i remember them putting me on the guest list and hanging out after the show, it was ballin.

I could name half a dozen bands that I was a fan of before they "made it big," but what kind of status is that really earning me if there's a thousand other kids claiming the same thing? Being in the right place at the right time holds no significance anymore, it seems.
