Quentin Tarantino's latest project about a group of U.S. Soldiers avoiding death by going into Nazi occupied France to help their allies.

Haha, I definately remember being excited for this about 7 years ago. This is one of the first scripts that QT ever wrote. Apparently it is about 300 some pages long which is enough for 3 movies, let alone one long ass one. I've learned at this point to never get excited for anything Tarantino until I actually see a trailer.

It sounds incredible. I don't know whether or not Adam Sandler will be in it (like he's been rumored to), but whatever QT does, it will be nothing short of spectacular.Since you love him as much as I do, let me say this: Jackie Brown doesn't get nearly enough credit ... but it rocks. There is no way a director of his stature is having trouble financing this movie, especially since the buzz has been building for about 10 years.
If you knew anything about the film business, it would seem more likely to you:
1) Google Orson Welles.
2) "What have you done for me lately?" QT's last film was a flop, which creates hesitance in the studios' pocketls.
3) Marketability. Films are a product of their timer. There hasn't been a profitable* market for war films, regardless of director, since Saving Private Ryan.
*actual wide release return, which most war films in the last 10 years are failing to do, regardless of critical reaction.

1) Welles was blacklisted for taking a potshot at one of the most powerful men in the country with Citizen Kane, Tarantino has yet to do that.
2) Yea Grindhouse was a flop, but it did have the budget of two films, and I would imagine Tarantino's half had the lesser budget.
3) There's always a market for Tarantino films, and its guaranteed not to be your typical war flick.
I doubt financing is the hold-up on this film.

same here. what did you think of Death Proof?
I loved it, and I was really not expecting to at all. He said he cast Kurt Russel because a whole generation hadn't really seen him at his best, and I fit right in there, because before Death Proof I wasn't aware of how great an actor he was. The dialouge was great, and just as stylish as Pulp Fiction. He did such a great job writing it- I absolutely despised the first group of girls, and since they get brutally murdered I think you're supposed to. With the second group of girls, when they're playing Ship's Mast I really, really wanted to see Mike get them, but once they turn around on him, it completely turned my opinion away and I wanted to see them get what he deserved. I jumped back and forth between rooting for Mike and the girls the whole time, it was great.

06/25/08, 11:13 AM
I loved the first half of Death Proof (9/10) and liked the second half (6.5-7/10). Stuntman Mike was such a cool character. The way he shot the car wreck scene at the end of the first half was sick. Something about the second half was a little off to me, i don't know what it was but when they turn the tables on him and he is like "keep it together mike", that part is hysterical.
Yeah, I just love how badly he gets it in the ending.

I'm so stoked now.Interesting timing. I was just about to come in and post the Brad Pitt rumor.
"The chapters are said to form a storyline double helix of sorts, switching from the Bastards to the other main character, which Vulture describes as “a French Jewish teenager named Shosanna who survives the massacre of her family.” She is curating the premiere and has something up her sleeve for the Third Reich as well."

Basically it says a few sites have read the script and are saying ""if you took the bad guy swagger of RESERVOIR DOGS, the uber coolness and structure of PULP FICTION, throw in the revenge angle of KILL BILL, set it in World War II" and "like Kill Bill meets The Dirty Dozen meets Cinema Paradiso." It's very well done. I loved how it started after the bank robbery and it didn't bother telling you what happened during, only before and after. It was quite a debut for him. That and it has an amazing and small cast, each person absolutely perfect for their role.

Res Dogs is the best.
No way. Solid reworking of Kubrick's The Killing, but given that The Killing is the original non-linear heist film and the better one, it would be hard to pass off Tarantino's reworking as being particularly special. Not that it is in any way bad, it's just hard to find Reservoir Dogs as innovative knowing how good The Killing is. Plus Reservoir Dogs doesn't have Sterling Hayden.

I would say Reservoir Dogs is more a reworking of City on Fire, except taking the last 15 minutes of City on Fire and fleshing it out into an entire movie.

Would love to see him in a QT film.
I always love the chapter titles he uses in his films and these are no different, they all are really cool but tell you nothing as to what happens.
Brad Pitt is perfect for Aldo Raines
Leonardo Dicaprio would be great for the role of Hans Landa, the bad guy, but I understand Tarantino wanting a german actor.
Simon Pegg is also a really good choice for his role, it needs a guy British as the day is long
For the Jewish girl, who's story is absolutely fascinating, I think Natalie Portman fits the role like it was written for her. Whoever he casts, she better be good.

haha yea, revenge is way better when you don't know it's coming
I really wouldn't consider it a spoiler though, because 1) the movie is a remake, so anyone looking the movie up will see what it is about and 2) the brief synopsis of the film has to include that this is part of the plot, especially since it is how the movie opens. It will no doubt be shown in the first trailer.
Was there a Mexican standoff in Kill Bill (1 or 2)? I can't remember and its driving me crazy.
I just finished reading. Absolutely no spoilers here.
Its probably the best story Tarantino has come up with. Nothing played out in the end like I thought it would, there are quite a few twists, one in particular that I could do without. Its the kind of thing that in time I will come to appreciate more, because it fits right into Tarantino's style. Everything else was just about perfect. The bad guys and the good guys are all great and its long and sprawling. It doesn't need to be to two films, and I don't think it will. The script I just read is five chapters, 167 pages, so it will certainly be a long movie, but its fine that way. Its a classic Tarantino movie (weird, funny characters, violence, mexican standoffs, toilet scenes, feet), as much of a period piece as it is a war movie, and I simply can't wait to see it. Its got a very good chance of being his best film and if he really nails its going to be a masterpiece. Prepare yourselves for the best dialogue he's written since Pulp Fiction. I hate to start the hype this early, but its pretty fantastic. The story is absolutely epic from the opening scene, there's tons of emotion. I think it will become as much of a classic as Pulp Fiction has. In short, this is going to be a damn good movie.
also- don't worry, B.J. Novak is a great choice.

I am so happy Sam Levine is doing work like this.
I think the title of this should not be Inglorious Bastards, but Once Upon A Time In Nazi Occupied France. Inglorious Bastards focuses on one part of the screenplay while the other title encompasses the whole thing. Also, I love the obvious Sergio Leone reference. To me there are tons of Western homages in this movie and its really kind of a western that takes place....in Nazi occupied France.
I do indeed think this will be Tarantino's biggest movie/his masterpiece. I wish we could have seen it when it was 200+ plus pages because I could read about these characters for hundreds of pages, but its still just about perfect.

I'm assuming you haven't read it, because if you had you would know exactly how right he is. I feel like the title of the movie is going to throw people off big time and make them dislike the movie. The Bastards are really not even what the story is about.

I think the title should be changed, because, the Basterds (please, please, don't correct me on my spelling) are not inglorious. In fact, they're not the main subjects of the story. Like Pulp Fiction, this movie is about them, and a Jewish girl. Both get lots of screentime, but naming it Once Upon A Time In Nazi Occupied France encompasses all the elements of the story, along with the Sergio Leone reference- its kind of like a western taking place with the background of World War 2. The title just makes it seems like a different kind of movie than it is.

First of all, I was singling any one individual out. Second of all, I'm just biased because I think reading scripts before movies come out is really lame and a huge waste of time. And who cares if someone is turned away because of a film's title? That is their loss. Do some research.

I understand that; I just think once you've read it Inglorious Bastards isn't a very good title either, because though the characters are rather anti-hero, theyre pretty glorious. OUATINOF is already a chapter title, it'll probably stay that way.
Man, still so excited for this.
Jacob, you've read the script right? Do you agree with the casting for the major characters?
Yes, absolutely. Brad Pitt's role, Aldo Raine, was just written for him. B.J. Novak's character is a weird, nervous little guy (like B.J. Novak) and Mike Myers's character is small, but pivotal, and very British- there won't be any room for him to mess it up. The only casting choice I'm skeptical about is Eli Roth as the bear Jew, a particularly violent member of the Basterds. I think Josh Brolin or Bruce Willis would do it much better. He was going to cast Leonardo Dicaprio as the bad guy, who would have been perfect, but he's going for a german actor now. I'm sure that will work out nicely too but Leo would be excellent.

I read very few scripts, this one for two reasons- its one of my most anticipated movies, ever, and I want to be a filmmaker when I'm older. Reading it and imagining how I'd do it is a blast. Its not a waste of time at all really considering how good of a writer Tarantino is and how much fun it is imagining the scenes. Going by script (which I know s hard to compare with) how is it compared to Pulp Fiction?
As a script its even. Its long and sprawling and even though its a period piece its still 100% a Tarantino movie, even though its very different from his previous work. The final film may very well blow Pulp Fiction out of the park. I love the script though, its got the coolest, most intense, and bold ending ever, bold on what happens and how it happens. All the hype is deserved because the script is fantastic. So many quotable lines.
You make me more and more excited. I really love Tarantino, even if people just say he's just good at doing homages, it's whatever.
I hated the ending when I read it at first but I've now come to think its brilliant. Its a big, bold ending that no one see's coming (I had to re-read it a few times) and it makes it a very different World War 2 movie. I also can't stress enough that its kind of a western taking place in World War 2. But the ending is such a huge leap, you either love (probably this one because its just so undeniably good) or hate it.
and I haet the homage argument. His homages are better movies than most.
I also can't stress enough that its kind of a western taking place in World War 2.
How so?
How so?
There are no big battle set pieces like in Saving Private Ryan or Thin Red Line, instead, lots of more intense fights. I mean (not really a spoiler but I'm playing it safe) the biggest action pieces take place over a lot of time in a bar and a movie theater. Also, the revenge story is Wester-ish, along with Brad Pitt's character. And a lot of the music is Ennio Morricone.

Very excited to see how this turns out.
Speaking to Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117995914.html?categoryId=2525&cs=1), the eighty-year-old Morricone cautioned that, while he has accepted Tarantino's offer to score the World War II epic, he is concerned that the three-month, February-to-April window between the completion of principal photography and the April delivery to the Cannes Film Festival won't leave him enough time to finish his work. Per Morricone, "Either I start working on it before he stops shooting - after we discuss it together - or I just can't do it."
Eli Roth is taking a break from his baseball-bat-wielding duties as "The Bear Jew" to direct "Nation's Pride", the film-within-a-film starring Daniel Brühl as a heroic Nazi sniper.

Nice to have a date to look forward to. I loved the script and can't wait to see how it translates to the screen.

I'll be so pissed if they end up cutting this movie into two parts.

Yeah, I remember there being rumors about it because of the lengthy runtime of the movie, but I haven't heard anything about it in a while.
This movie sounds really good, I can't wait to see it.

Ah, well that would be shitty. And it probably doesn't help that Grind House tanked at theaters.

In defense of that, the general feeling about Death Proof was that in was a bore-fest. On the other hand, I LOVED Death Proof.
This is going to be the first movie I see at the theatre in a long time.
FUCK YES. Full trailer coming tommorow.

HD trailer is up. It's not doing it for me. Might see it for Pitt and Eli Roth but eh, no interest really.

Definitely being billed around the Basterd's exploits, only one shot of Shosanna and all... but it is looking good.
Still very excited about this movie.

don't know if this has been brought up yet, but the thread title should definitely be changed to the same spelling as the movie

Am I allowed to change it, or does a mod have to do it?
