Sad, but true.

At least an official release for the original Spaced on dvd is slated for this summer.

Here's a review of the Pilot script for the U.S. version.

I guess the main controversy is coming from the fact that Wright, Pegg, and Haynes aren't involved.

McG is producing it. I really fucking hate that guy.

I hope this show fucking fails. If I want to watch Spaced, I'll throw on my DVD set.

I bite my thumb at this!

I agree with what someone said above. If I want to watch Spaced, I'll put on the DVD I have.

As bad as he tried to make it sound, I really feel like the guy reviewing it would have loved it if he didn't already know Spaced. Man, I'm gonna be annoyed when my friends try and tell me I should watch this.

Haha. I actually almost titled the thread:

"Spaced - U.S. Remake (Cue angry comments from Jess)"

Hahahah you should of. It does make me angry. I'm friends with Edgar Wright on myspace and he is not happy with this at all, neither is Jessica Hynes or Simon Pegg. He's posted statements in blogs from each of them and I honestly feel bad for them. I can't believe the remakers didn't even tell them about this. What low class.

As you can tell I can say more now from my last comment because I was in the middle of things.
They need to stop remaking shows. Spaced is great because it was Edgar, Simon, Jessica and Nick. It was their writing and acting that made it wonderful. It was the british humor as well.

I hope this remake crashes to pieces. It still won't teach them anything tough, they'll just do it to another show next year.

WordzandDreamz

Yeah, it really makes me angry too. I have somewhat given up on getting mad at remakes though, because no one can stop it. I have to sit back and let Platinum Dunes remake A Nightmare on Elm Street and I can't do anything about it.

Jessooker

Remakes are the worst, unless they're truly and properly done. This is not an example of that.

Yeah they didn't. On Edgar's myspace he said that he found out the same way the public heard about it. That was his biggest gripe about it. I find it very disrespectful.

I find it very disrespectful.absolutely. as much as i'd love to see the american version become the next office, i find it hard to believe it will because simon, jessica and rdgar put so much into the show and their all very distinct personalities and people.

i'm kind of torn on this. i hate the idea, but am trying to keep an open mind about it. only because i was completely against a us version of the office. i didn't think they'd be able to even come close to the quality of the original and that the original characters were too great and impossible to top. but i was wrong, and it's been awesome to see the us version become it's own show and grow into 4+ seasons after being based on something with such few episodes.

but, i think spaced is completely different. the original office characters were great, but the setting is very relateable. spaced isn't like that at all. it's all on the characters. 100%. i don't see a us version being able to strike that kind of gold. i just don't.

in all honesty though, even if they do a decent job remaking it, i hope it fails solely for their way of going about it. i really don't think the office would have worked in the us if gervais wasn't involved at the start. not including pegg, wright and frost and just starting it up without them even knowing is bullshit.

i won't watch it.

I refuse to watch it was well because it just won't compare. I think it's going to be very stupid.

Haha I love Edgar Wright...this is from his myspace blog, talking about McG's interview about the new show. He is priceless.

This is from IGN.COM, an interview that took place at last week’s Paley Festival in Los Angeles.

IGN INTERVIEW (http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vdHYuaWduLmNvbS9hcnRpY2x lcy84NjIvODYyMjcwcDEuaHRtbA==)

Asked how McSpaced was progressing, McG replied.

"It’s going well. I sure wish that Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg were involved. I chased after the show because I’m a huge fan of their collective voice – you know, Nick Frost and the whole gang. I’ve never spoken to them and I would very much like to make it clear that I’d bend over backwards to have them involved in any capacity that they see fit. They’re the reason I went after the show originally and I certainly intend to respect them in every way that I know how."

Okay, how’s this for a check list of ways to respect us:

1) Note that there are also two women responsible for the creation of SPACED, co-writer and star Jessica Hynes (nee Stevenson), not to mention producer of both series, Nira Park

2) Contact us before a) announcing the show in the trades b) hiring a writer c) shopping it to a network d) acquiring the rights e) crowing on about what huge fans you are.

3) Bend over backwards to pick up the phone. You got in touch with James Cameron before commencing TERMINATOR 4, but didn’t see it fit to contact any or all of us before developing this.*

(*It’s worth pointing out that McG has actually been in touch - at least by voicemail - reaching out to me last week. Weird that he managed to obtain my number in late March and not during the two or three months before the Variety article in October. So only eight months late.)

I could go on with my list, but this exhausts me as much as I’m sure it exhausts you.

I will leave you with one other comment that McG had about pilot writer Adam Barr.

"Adam Barr is writing the show. He’s a very smart guy and he’s written a pilot that everyone’s excited about."

Yeah, McG, that would be the first episode of the original series, by Simon and Jessica. Maybe have a look at the original again. Or perhaps for the first time. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

It was a british show that really started the careers of director Edgar Wright, and actors Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Jessica Stevenson. Wright, Pegg and Frost are the minds behind Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. It was an excellent show that is now being remade into an american show by a douchebag director, who didn't even have the respect of telling the original creators about it and letting them find out with the general public.

That is really stupid, but as someone said above, don't write it off just yet, because I think everybody was saying that about The Office, and its a great show now.

But still, the whole douchebag director thing doesnt sound promising.
I'll have to find the pilot online.

McG is such a stupid cunt. I heard he actually wants to call the new Terminator movie Terminator 4: Rise of the Terminators. That's the stupidest fucking thing I've ever heard.

I might watch some Spaced tomorrow. The commentary is awesome haha.

Yeah the director is McG...the guy behind the damn Charlie's Angel's movies. I just don't think it's a show that will translate well. The Office was easy to translate, this was a great show because of the actors and the simple yet hysterical moments the show had. It's just hard to explain unless you've seen the show.

One of the great things about Spaced was that it referenced so many things. It was like a geek's wet dream in 30 minutes. I think for an American audience to get it, and I'm not trying to be judgemental or anything, it would need to be watered down so much. I've seen American comedies that try to appeal to geeks, they aren't good (The Big Bang Theory just started over here, looks like vomit from the adverts).

I read that the US release of our Spaced on DVD is getting new commentaries from Simon, Edgar and Jess. I really want to listen to them now to hear what they think of it so long after the show was made.

I can't wait for the dvd. I've never heard any commentaries because the only way I watch the show is online.

On the DVD I have it's not so much a commentary, and more just like friends sitting around watching TV and chatting. Not the best commentary track ever but still funny.

i saw they were nixing it, but i didn't read much about it. is that also killing the us release of the dvds?

i'm glad they're not going forth with it, but that'd suck if it loses a proper us release because of it.
