I don't know if this already a thread, but I do need some help. I've been smoking on and off again for the past 2 years. When I am at home, I am perfectly fine not smoking. But when I'm at school, I smoke like a fiend. I really need to find away to quit smoking at school. The problem is, every time I do, I don't make it a day or two before giving up again. Whenever I get pissed off or something doesn't go my way, I just smoke again. Also, some of my best friends are smokers, so they're not a good influence. Any advice? I've tried the patches and gum (they suck, btw) and I've tried going cold turkey. I guess I just need something to motivate me through the rough times. Any suggestions at all would be great.

Have you tried slowly cutting down, making it a gradual process?
I'm not sure how many you currently smoke a day, but maybe removing two a day at first..then slowly keep increasing.
That way your body isn't going from that massive amount of nicotine to none at all.

good for you! :appl: smoking is so unhealthy- one of my roommates recently quit but she just did it cold turkey.
try doing something else when your stressed, find an activity that makes you relax and sub that in when you're po'd or feel like you need to smoke -- or at least for a while and then smoke, then gradually just do that cause it'll make you stop stressing or whatever
running?yoga?stress ball?exercise in general is a good stress reliever, punch a pillow?
*positive vibes and good luck!!*

I've found that if you want to start up exercising (unless you already do exercise and you've realized you can't perform as well as you used to prior to smoking), it's a really good motivator to quit smoking since your lungs pretty much suck compared to before.

Never smoked. I've always heard that instead of using nicorette gum that regular chewing gum works pretty well. Other than that, try removing yourself from situations where other people smoke cigarettes. If you're around the sights and smells, you're bound to want to smoke again.
IMO, It's really cool that you make the commitment to stop smoking. Smoking's not just unhealthly, it's also rips a giant hole in your wallet. Think about all the things you could do with that extra 10 to 20 bucks a week you now don't spend on cigarettes.

My boss smoked for 13 years or so and she used the prescription stuff (chantix) and swears by it. She also used the herbal cigarettes for when she'd go out and stuff, for the habit. Its been almost 4 months and she hasn't smoked at all

Every time you need a smoke, jog around the campus buildings at school. You need to exercise some form of self control. Gradually cutting down really doesn't work as well quitting cold turkey.
I've quit a couple times by substituting cigarettes with chewing on toothpicks, chewing gum, etc. Keep your hands busy with elastics or stress balls.

I was talking with a friend last night who was telling me about his roommate who started smoking cigars and then moved to cigarettes. They both go to a school with a "contract" that prevents them from smoking/drinking on campus (I don't go there) and he was telling me how his roommate had to go from a smoking quite regularly to absolutely none. He said that it was hard to watch.
My friend's boyfriend (she actually refused to date him until he stopped smoking) had success with the patch (after trying a few different things). People stop all the time, so it is possible. Good luck!

I'm not sure if this works but I've heard if you suck on a lolipop evertime you want a cigarette it helps you quit.

My plan is to quit this Monday, hence my last cigarette will be Sunday just before midnight. I'm going to take all of your advice, and really try hard this time. Thanks a lot everyone, this is helping me get more focus.

The first 3 days are the hardest. After that it's all a mental thing.

My dad smoked for 12 years before he suddenly quit one day, cold turkey. His motivation was for my mom and I, because my mom only has one lung (she surgically had it removed because of a condition) and well ... because I was an infant. He had a different situation to help motivate him through it, but he told me the best thing he could have ever done was just throw the cigarettes away and set his eyes on what he held valuable in life: his family.
Sounds corny, but that's exactly how he put it to me.

My boss smoked for 13 years or so and she used the prescription stuff (chantix) and swears by it.
my dad used this for a lil while but then started again and my aunt was put on it because it was either smoke one more time and die and not see her granddaughter turn three months (she was 2 1/2 months at the time) or quit and live, she obviously quit but this stuff makes you gain weight and causes suicidal/homicidal thoughts,...
alright. it is completely a mental thing like mentioned before. tell yourself you can give them up like nothing. next: stop buying them. everytime you do question why and how a little stick can have control over your life. its all your choices. if you want to actually quit, then stop buying them. the urge will go away with time. and then you can spend all your money on better things.

uhhhhh, not really.

Haha, and sadly enough thats what I do. I used to smoke about a pack a day for oh, maybe a year and a half. These were Cowboy Killers too, not the lights. But after the realization that I couldn't walk up two flights of stairs without difficulty breathing, I went back to my first love: Grizzly Long Cut Straight snuff. I wouldn't recommend doing what I did though.

I used to smoke around a pack a day. Then I slowly cut back and only smoke occasionally, like at parties. I actually haven't smoked in about a week. I often find myself smoking half cigs.
It's really not that hard, at least it wasn't for me. Good luck.

I'm glad quitting is going well for you, its totally worth it if you stick to it, not just physically (better health) but also psychologically (defeating an addiction). The cravings will be there for a long time, I know it took me six or seven times trying to quit (granted its really not fair to say I quit because I just moved to another tobacco medium) but one day I hope to quit chewing tobacco because its gross and hazardous to the health.
I'm going on two days now without any and before that I had cut down to like 3-4 a day.

i totally relate. I was just home for spring break and hardly smoked all week...but as soon as I got back to school I had to light up. For me its mostly when I drink or on the way to class & stressed out that I smoke. For one of my classes we're supposed to change a health habit and write a paper on our progress over the semester...I picked smoking. I've been trying to cut down, but it's hard. I'm basically relying on moving back home after graduation, and hopefully that will make me stop/smoke less. Good Luck!
also i know a few people that got hypnotized not to smoke...and haven't had a cigarette since. It costs about $500 or so.

Hah, I've smoked Reds before I can even remember, I think I was seven when my friend stole one from his mom and we hid in the bushes lighting it up with a lighter we just purchased while sweating like robbers at the bank just before they pull the guns out.
As soon as that smoke hit my lungs and I started convulsing on the ground, nothing was the same any more.
Sure I didn't smoke after that till 8th grade, but then... one red after another one, one school break after another one, one computer game after another one, one after sex cig after another one and
one try to quit after another one (longest was like 2 years)
nothing, I am still sitting here chowing down 1 pack per 1 day and I think there is no escaping it.
You're one mistake was starting of with Reds... too good to give up, if it was like Camels or something, it wouldn't be much of a waste :)))
Marlboro Reds suck. Get some nicer cigarettes
I've gone almost a week without a smoke and I got some nicotine gum to help with the cravings. One/Two pieces a day does it. :)

Just stop for two straight weeks. I read somewhere that if you can stick to anything for two weeks it will become a habit, and having tried it as relates to other matters I know that it's true. By the end of two straight weeks even the thought of smoking again will be disgusting to you, and you won't want to be around people who do.
