How much would plugs cost, about a twelve-gauge, probably plastic ones?
And how much would a taper cost?

more than you have.
They should be made of acrylic, plastic will cause a bad reaction in your ears. They can range in price depending on where you get them, $15-25 is reasonable for a pair. What size taper and in what size, you shouldn't need a taper to go to a 12 gauge. Shopping online you will find better quality if you go to the right site and it will most likely be cheaper.

Do you think i'd need a taper to get to an 8-gauge?
If not, how do I get the plugs IN my ears?
Note that what i have in now are the studs that were used to pierce them over four months ago.
What size were you pierced with, a stud usually means you were pierced with a gun and are most likely at either 20 or 18 gauge. If thats true you need to first go to 16, then 14 and so on. You can't stretch a fresh hole to an 8. If you are at a 10 right now though, after a few months your ear should be ready to insert the 8 gauge plugs in. Over 2-3 months time and after pulling on your lobe for awhile the hole should become naturally bigger allowing a bigger plug to fit in with only little discomfort. Go to www.tribalectic.com for more info. It's an awesome site with good info and a good message board with tons of people willing to help.

www.bodypunks.com - i started out with a captive ring instead of a plug just because it was easier to clean... they have some pretty cheap plugs, though.
