View Full Version : Can someone please recommend me some screamo?
Hello everyone. My name is Lizzie. 'Tis my first time making a thread/posting :)!
I was wondering if anyone can recommend me any bands like this (Not saying all these are screamo)? Or any screamo bands you recommend.
Saetia
Hot Cross
Off Minor
Indian Summer
Converge
Angel Hair
Toru Okada
Textbook Traitors
The Promise Ring
CTTS
Portraits of Past
Boards of Canada
Slowdive
pg.99
Orchid
Anasarca <3
Sailboats
Fugazi, etc. etc.
I just feel as though there are so many other bands out there I am missing. If you name me some songs, too, bonus points. ;)

Oh golly gee, we have a few kids like this at my school. It makes me very sad :(. I think Saosin was better with eh, Anthony Green anyways. But that's between you and me.

Kidcrash
My Heart to Joy at the Same Tone

and also Reversal of Man and I Hate Myself, but I feel those are pretty standard and I wouldn't be showing you anything new.
Seriously though, everyone. My Heart to Joy at the Same Tone is bad ASS.

Its just something to get used to, kind of, about screamo. The best bands were together for frequently less than a year and a half, put out two obscure releases that no one likes until 7 years later. I can give you more recs, but they start moving further outside of screamo : 1905, essentially a hardcore band, Drive Like Jehu is post-hardcore, Moss Icon is an original Emo Summer band, etc. But all sort of border on the edge of screamo. 1905 is very influenced by it, DLJ influenced it greatly, as did Moss Icon.
And you're welcome. It is always fun to trade bands with someone actually interested in the genre (I've never heard of anasarca, I just realized, so I'm going to go check them out).

Yeah. But why is that? I mean, they never seem to really last all that long. There will always be that arguement whether or not screamo has died. Some bands still are together, but, do you think it has? Or will it just have to branch out? I love learning about this genre. It's so interesting.
Anasarca is good. Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt has to be my favorite they've done.

Hmm. I could see a good argument being made that pure screamo in the vein of like Heroin is pretty much dead. And former emo bands always go on to do weird things (Emo = Screamo in my eyes). Portraits of Past eventually turned into a seriesof garage rock tribute bands. That band is probably the best summation for what happens. If you've ever read their lyrics, 01010101 essentially tells the story of their disillusionment with hardcore. Reading some interviews of its members still they are very negative about the hardcore scene (Exception is the drummer, who went on to Funeral Diner, but he has stated he didn't really feel part of the rest of them). Screamo has always been one of the most progressive hardcore genres (Saetia -> Orchid -> Pg. 99 -> City of Caterpillar, all are incredibly versatile and innovative bands compared to say Bane). PoP got extremely pissed with what they perceived as the hypocrisy of the hardcore scene : The hardcore scene was essentially their "counter force", it was their way of fighting against the issues they saw within popular music and culture. However they gradually realized it had all the attributes they hated, it defined what type of music you were supposed to make, and if you were truly progressive your music went unappreciated. (This is also why PoP sounds entirely different from bands of their time, being probably the earliest "modern" screamo band). They wound up disbanding after releasing their album and going on a live tour for it, where they wound up playing at Art shows.
That's probably not the answer you were expecting haha. Palatka, an emoviolence band, broke up and then members were part of Halo Perfecto, an odd punk infused combination of almost every genre imaginable - this is likely going to be what turns out more frequently. More and more diverse combinations of genre and style will be the likely be the direction screamo heads in. Hope that answered oyu somewhat.

...Wow. This is fantastic. Why can't I meet anyone that knows this much in real life? The only conversations I can really engage in is online. Sigh, perhaps one day. I wonder what band members do when their band breaks up. Besides continue to make music. I wonder if they have to work at some minimum wage paying job in a grocery store bagging groceries. All of Storm the Bastille are at different schools in different cities/states and play together when they can.

I pretty much feel the same way, I've never actually been to a hardcore show. There simply aren't any in my area. I'm planning on changing that this summer, but almost all of the truly informative discussions I've had about it have been online.
http://portraitsofpast.com/ if you want to find out what they did after breaking up, basically the only one who didn't keep doing music became a homeopath (a type of herb-based medicine). As for other bands, most of them really do keep playing music for as long as they still feel it, but they do it in other genres with other people. And your welcome, it is fun to inform and just as fun to theorize.

True, at college I have encountered far more open minded people who are liable to be fans of this kind of music. They aren't, but I'll get them around eventually.
