I think you've confused indie with hipster.

RestingBird
03/28/08, 08:44 PM
Why the fuck is there a reason?
People take shit way too seriously
Who cares if someone doesn't know what genre of film or genre of music the original poster just want to state how she liked the movies and wanted to watch similar ones

CstSnow
03/28/08, 08:46 PM
Easy there buddy, dont make a big deal out of it, you will just end up looking stupid, just like anyone else who gets angry on the internet.

colorlesscliche
03/28/08, 08:47 PM
Then I guess she should have said: I've watched these movies, could you recommend others like it? Not: I'm so fucking hip and watch shitty non-indie movies that I think are indie.

While they definitely are not "indie" movies I wouldn't say all the movies she posted were shitty.

I'm going to suggest a few:

16 Candles
The Breakfast Club
High Fidelity

I hope they are indie enough. :)))

i love how people say stupid things and then call somebody "a dick" when they call them out on it.

the movies listed weren't indie. they are hipster movies with large followings and large budgets. the complete opposite of indie movies.

Brick was pretty good.

Getup and Dance
03/29/08, 12:39 PM
Not indie, but on the lines you requested about.

A Scanner Darkly
I Heart Huckabees
King of California

heyozzie
03/29/08, 12:52 PM
i wanted so bad to like brick but i actually hated it.
scanner darkly was ok, but i heart huckabees was a bit below average. and i know someone is gonna say squid and the whale, which had its moments, but was overall disappointing.

not sure if 'the ten' by the stella guys (mostly david wain) would be indie, but its worth watching just for the catscan part.

if you have any interest in time travel or physics at all, go out and rent primer. it'll blow your mind.

also, shark attack 3: megaladon. it will blow your mind chief. and yes, i'm serious. (i'm not)

i, also, hated brick. agree on squid and the whale, it was mediocre at best. but i liked i heart huckabees a lot.

and primer is fucking fantastic.

blasphemy i love that movie

i just don't understand why it was done the way it was. i was digging it, up until the movie theater part. then i just fucking hated it. they had a good thing going, then fucking blew it by trying too hard to do something different. it could have been good, but it lost me in the middle. like, i was seriously pissed off.

schulyer fisk alone is worth watching it for though. giant crush on that chick.

I hated Brick and couldn't even make it all the way through the film. I just couldn't get into it at all. The dialog, which I know was done that way on purpose, just took away from the whole feeling of the movie, IMO.

I enjoyed Brick. Was a fun to watch movie... but I watched it at like 4AM, so I would'ev considered most movies good.

Though nonindie, you should really check out:

Throne of Blood
Kaiden
Seppuku
12 Angry Men
City of God
Carindaru (sp?)

Most films aren't indie any more. Everything is owned by something more conglomerate.

Anyway, my tops lately:

Killer of Sheep
Network
All About Eve
Sunshine

I wish my goddamned Bergman downloads would work :(

It's amazing how well Network stands up after 30 years, and how much more poignant it is as well. Anyone wanting to go into journalism/media should be required to watch Network and Ace in the Hole on the first day.

Sunshine was really lame, when Freddy Krueger started killing people at the end, ugh. I thought that a few of the movies the original poster liked were quality films, even if they aren't street cool because they're indie or what have you. Eternal Sunshine is one of my all-time favorites. How about Eraserhead?

Haha I'm currently writing an essay on Ran for my Shakespeare class. I probably enjoy TOB more because I haven't had to write about it. You need to see it Ran though, one of the most gorgeous films ever made. The scale of the entire film is incredible, it puts nearly every 'epic' made in this century to shame.

I can't wait to see it. Haven't been able to because.. only way I can see these movies is through download. Will be a while before I get it, unless I finally get a job and get a netflix account.

I don't think Donnie Darko is an indie movie or anything like that but I still think it's a really neat film.

I thought Sunshine was pretty good until it turned into a slasher flick. Up to that point I enjoyed it.

I feel bad for anyone who hasn't seen sunshine in theatres. While its a good film, half the experience was seeing the visuals on the big screen. There's nothing like being in almost complete blackness, only to have the entire theatre be blinded white. Good stuff.

I saw it in theaters and the visual experience when they were in the viewing room and the scenes outside the spaceship were great. I guess you guys weren't bothered by the fact that the filmmakers seemingly abandoned or at the very least didn't feel that the original premise of the story was enough to sustain the whole film, so they added a crazy serial killer dude who spoke to god for seven years or something. It was like the last third of the movie was part of a different film almost.

they didn't abandon anything. everything was involved in the original premise of the story. maybe they took it somewhere different than you expected them to go, but they never strayed away from the story. everything fit together.

Everyone should be required to watch. Some of the monologues, especially when the big conglomerate guy is addressing Beale, some of the best moments ever. And, when you watch it, you seriously recognize how many references there are to it: I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!

Sunshine was great. Not one of Boyle's best but I liked the whole premise. Plus, Underworld added a great soundtrack to the film and it's a new twist to 2001: Space in my opinion.

I've learned to just be silent and laugh at how immature some people sound. Reminds me of the "popular" group in high school, and the lyrics to Admit it!
