I picked Rohmer for the Six Moral Tales alone. Some of the best scripts ever written.

Truffaut, hands down.

Jean Reno is the only Frenchman I've ever cared much for.

Chris Marker...I'm trying to see if my school forgets that I have his Criterion disc from their library...

Godards movies varied so much and out-lived the new-wave trend more so than any of the other directors.

Breathless is my fav.
Out of curiosity, what do you all consider to be his best/most entertaining, etc. films? I've seen seven of his and while I've enjoyed or appreciated all of them, I've never finished a Godard film and said 'wow' or really loved what I had just seen. And just FYI I've thus far seen: Breathless, A Woman Is A Woman, Contempt, Band of Outsiders, Alphaville, Masculin Feminin, and Two or Three Things I Know About Her with my two favorites being A Woman Is A Woman and Band of Outsiders. I recognize this is little with respect to his entire body of work but I feel like I'm alone by not being enamored with his sixties work, unless everyone finds Vivre sa vie, Weekend, and Pierrot le fou to be the best from that decade, in which case I've just determined what movies to check out from the library this week.

Well, I have to admit I've only seen a handful of his films, but for me, Contempt is his best. I was absolutely enthralled by it the first time I saw it - and its hard to put my finger on why. Since its about filmmaking, I found it to highlight a lot of the pretensions about the industry, but being self-reflective at the same time. For me, its a really hard film to pin down, and thats probably why I enjoyed it so much.

Seeing The Dreamers made me want to see Band of Outsiders so damn bad, but I have yet to do it.

Yeah I've seen it once and wasn't a big fan. I'm tempted to see it in theatres in two weeks when it makes a one-week run hoping that it will make more sense, but if that doesn't change my mind I'll just be mad I spent $8 to see a movie I didn't like.

Contempt is the best imo but I think Breathless has more of a personal feeling for me, being as it was my first French New Wave film and I use to watch it with my parents when I was little.

Haha I'd stay away then, it just might sour you over the movie even more. Its not really a film that needs to be seen on the big screen anyway.

Oh man. I was going to come in and say Godard, but then I saw Marker...

Chris Marker. If La jetee had been the only film he ever made, he'd still get my vote.

(Where is Varda?)

The only French films I know I've seen were mostly Godard.

Yeah, I was going to say that there are some others that should've been added, but she's the only one who is missing who definitely has to be included. Alternatively, I know many people claim that Malle isn't technically part of the New Wave.
