View Full Version : The keyboardist...

I have an odd "pet peeve" it's when a band has a keyboardist, but (it seems like) they never use them.

An example: Underoath I've heard their albums A LOT, but I can't ever tell what he's doing besides a few intros and stuff (he uses a ton of gear live as well).

I've seen some pretty sweet keyboard moves... maybe.

Can anyone tell me what Chris is doing in Underoath, because it's really bothering me. The same could be said for bands like The Starting Line or Thursday who add dudes on keys.

Listen to old underoath, Chris has alot more parts in those cd's.

There are some great bands who use their keyboardists correctly. Sometimes the frontman works the keys, too and that works better. The effectiveness of the instrument in many bands' sound is arguable.

Depends what kind of band uses keyboards because they can work with some styles but may not with others.

Four Year Strong keyboardist is starting to dwindle with his parts as well, in their older stuff/dumpweed cover he was pretty prevalent.

i dont listen to underoath, but my guess is besides the obvious things you hear hes doing one of two things 1. not playing at all or 2. playing a low part thats not prevalent. like a low bass part to accompany the rhythm section.

Definitely. His new comic (My Stupid Life) isn't too great.

sometimes you have to listen with noise cancelling headphones or just listen really carefully in order to hear certain keyboard/synth parts. when i play keyboard/synth in bands, however, i do my best to make my presence in the music known because of all the bands that have either muffled or watered down the keyboard in their songs.

for some bands, a keyboardist adds nice backing and complementary to some other instruments, as well as helping wiht the tempo.
TSL has gotten a lot better with thieir musicianship with the additon of B Schmutz

Yes. And?

you can clearly hear the keyboards in Chiodos music, especially on their first CD

Underoaths first CD had a lot of keyboards, check out "Angel Below", great example

Emery's keyboardist is crazy. He throws his keyboard IN THE FREAKING AIR. That has hardcore written all over it

I reckon Victim Effect make it look cool. Hellogoodbye do NOT.

I always like a bit of keyboard now and then, just to add something a little different. For example Marta from Bleeding Through totally gives their songs more atmosphere and that little something else to make them memorable.

Although, I agree that when it seems the keyboard player doesn't actually do anything it gets pretty annoying. That I didn't even know Underoath had a keyboardist speaks volumes ...

Hahaha, well I think the singer sings and the drummer drums ... but then they have other drummer/singers too, and lord knows what the guy with the landmine on his head does ... and the cock nose - is that an instrument too?

dude. chris from underoath is almost constantly playing. at the very least he's almost always running loops, even if they're not super obvious.

favorite keyboardist in a band is probably the still remains key guy. his stuff on Of Love And Lunacy is so cool.
