this was on the dan patrick show yesterday, and it's a pretty ineresting question.
putting any money issues aside, which would be more fulfilling to you? the one big accomplishment, or multiple smaller ones?
examples:
would you rather win one masters championship or 10 smaller pga tour events?
win the heisman and have no pro career or not win the heisman and have a lengthy pro career?
winning four alamo bowls or winning one rose bowl?
have one mvp season or have no mvp season but multiple all star appearances?

hmm...
I think if I was playing, I would love to have multiple all star appearances and not win an MVP. But probably because I think if you have multiple all star appearances as well as a lengthy MLB career ya might have a better shot at the HOF. And that's what would be the ultimate in my opinion.

examples:

win the heisman and have no pro career or not win the heisman and have a lengthy pro career? probably toughest one, but i'd go with lengthy pro career
winning four alamo bowls or winning one rose bowl? rose bowl, although winning four alamo bowls would be a pretty decent college team
have one mvp season or have no mvp season but multiple all star appearances? multiple all star appearances - probably a more consistent career
i think it would be different for every sport. it is tough to actually decide between one big accomplishment or multiple smaller ones..(see above)
i see this question is comparable to a roger maris/mickey mantle analogy. sure maris had that record breaking season but seriously would you rather have retired being maris or mantle? no question about it.

Haha or Brady Anderson. He had that one monster year and then could not follow it up.

exactly, it's very comparable. except mantle was one of the greatest, so it's a little skewed. but same idea.

if you wanna use the mantle/maris analogy .. i want to be Mantle.
but if you said "would you rather be Eric Crouch or Correll Buckhalter?", considering Buckhalter was a teammate of Crouch's who has gone on to play in the pros, I'd take Crouch in a heartbeat.
okay ill try and do a more comparable one. would you rather have 3 50 homerun seasons like brady anderson or would you rather have the extended success of vlad guerrero?

i'd rather be Vlad ... but Brady never broke any records.
give me something like the Heisman and no pro career over a long NFL journeyman career, but not over a career filled with great success.

that's the perfect example of the question.

I think it's different for each sport.
I'll take one WSC every six years.

In an individual sport like golf or tennis...winning that one big major skyrockets you, even if only briefly, so I'd take the masters. Especially if you are younger, because you get the instant label of "the next big thing"...and even those that lose that title make good ad money
In a team sport...you make the money by being good over time, not by having one sick season (unless its a contract year), so I'd take those All-Star seasons and lengthy pro career. Also, you don't get paid to win the Heisman, even at min pay level, you can make millions in the NFL over 5-6 years.
And, for college, I'd rather win the big one because it gets remembered (Frozen Four, March Madness, etc)...whereas I couldn't tell you who won the last 4 Alamo bowls, probably even after looking it up.
If the chance is there to make money at the pro level in a team sport...I'd take longevity, otherwise, I want my temporary glory

It really depends on the sport.
This is like the conversation I had with my brother. We were trying to decide what would be better: being a starter on a DII team or being a bench warmer on a DI.

i had to make that choice coming out of high school. i took being a starter in 1-aa over waiting my turn at d1.
it wasn't just that though, cause i went to a championship caliber team, where as all the d1 teams that wanted me were awful. so it was more about winning than my playing time.

Money aside, big accomplishment.
Money in the equation: Pay me money to play a sport and be terrible at it and take fan abuse for 15+ years so long as i'm cashing a 6 figure check.
we are cured

ill take the masters, you get a 5 year pga tour exemption and a masters exemption until you're 65.
i'll take the lengthy pro-career over the heisman.
1 rose bowl over 4 alamo bowls.
the last one is tough but i think i'll say multiple all-star appearances.

I would want to be on a team that wins...in high school I played on a lacrosse team that went to the State semifinals. I wasn't on the first midfield line, but I was a captain of the team and played as much if not more than the first line anyway. I was probably the third best middie, and I didn't mind not being the best. Then I come here to a terrible frisbee team where I am probably the best player along with my co-captain, and I'd rather be the 4th or 5th best player if we could win more games.
If going 1-AA meant I played on an App State type team...give me AA

yeah, that was my thing. i could have went to d1 schools where'd i'd have to wait my turn, which wasn't a big deal. they were just fucking awful teams.
or i could go to a 1-aa school that was arguably the best team at that level of the entire 90's and potentially start as a freshman. it was a no brainer for me.

Masters (you get a jacket, man)
It would be tough to pass up the Heisman, but in this case, I'd pick lengthy pro career
Rose Bowl
Multiple All Star appearances
