I've wanted drums for a while now, and I just got a set. I know a few things about drums already cuz I've played some stuff in the school band, but nothing serious, but I've wanted to start for a while. I've been practising a few things lately: rolls, different beats, rythms, patterns, different strokes on all the parts, and most of all, my 'kicking' on the bass, or whatever you want to call it. I haven't had them for long, but I've been practising enough to know that I am willing to dedicate myself to it.

Anyways, that meant nothing. Read this. I need some beginner songs I should look at and attempt. Nothing too hard, something kind of easy to start me off.

Thanks alot.

Find the hardest song you can, practice practice practice, and all the easier songs will seem like cake when you nail a tough song. Thats how I learned bass. The first song I learned was Jerry was a Racecar Driver by Primus, and after that, all the other songs came easily.

dude, seriously, im not joking when i say this... take a simple song like britany spears, hit me baby 1 more time... learn the basic beat of that... then once you have it perfect, add your own fills, add better bass drum part, try playing the high hat part with both hands at differnt speeds, single hand, different speeds. go nuts with that one song, and you can do wonders to your playing.

what i did, as im self taught...is just simple, i just kept at it :) it sounds dumb maybe. but its just practice which makes u better.

the more you become at ease with the set, the better you will become.

Thats true, im self taught too and the more at ease with the kit you are the better you become. If you want some easy songs maybe try Whats My Age Again by Blink or In My Place by Coldplay which is really easy. Have Fun!:D

yes, exactly.

dont listen tot eh kid saying practice a really hard song. what does that teach you? how to play that song. wonderful. that doesnt make you a better musician.

do the britney spears thing. that will teach you to expand your drumming ability instead of confining yourself to a primus song.

go for it and good luck

Thanks. I knew a few of you would take me seriously, unlike the first reply. I've been at it as much as I can, I'll probably start trying some easy beats on mxtabs.net or something, and then get better step by step.

dude, what are you talking about, playing a hard song will only teach you that song? Do you play bass? Do you have any idea how many techniques are used in the song I mentioned? Theres plucking, slapping, fingertapping... that song taught me every technique that bass players use. All I was saying was, find a song that is very varied in its techniques, and is hard to play, practice till you have it perfect, and boom, you will have learned not only the basics to your instrument, but some pretty advanced stuff as well. I didnt say, "just play that song, youre only gonna ever play one song". Of course you take what you learn and you put it into your own original stuff, or give some flavor to other, simpler songs. I dont see how someone couldnt pick up on that.

The first song I could actually play the whole way through was "Come out and play" by The Offspring

From there its been magic...

I started with alot of Green Day and then I went to more Metal based tempos... Its different for everyone, and some is much harder to become accustomed to.. It depends on your style.. Im pretty fucking fast..

Because music is the same dude. Bass, guitar, drums, they all share the same fundamentals in terms of having to have rythm, beat, and skill to play them. Its like playing, say, basketball. The only way youll ever get better is playing a team that is a million times better than you. But you keep playing, and sooner or later youll get to their level.

if you want a really easy song to play try when i come around... it will help the consistency and tempo problems once you get it right and it also has some nice fills to work your way up to
