I would mutilate my children if they tried to put me in one.
I'd never ever put my grandma or my mom in one, I'd take care of them myself/hire a home nurse before I'd ever do that.
They give me chills, all of the old people are so unhappy in them, you can tell.

And some friends of mine are taking a nursing-type class thing and some of their work they do at the nursing homes around here (things like changing, cleaning 'em). I don't think I'd like to work in one too. Ha.

Euthanusia is still legal in Oregon. So when I get to the age of dying, prolly 70ish I think is right, I will buy me a plane ticket. Although I do know some Indians who would give me Opium and then scalp me for free. It would really suck to get scalped by an indian.

I volunteered in one for two years. It was quite possibly one of the most depressing places I've ever been.

I never want to put my mom in a nursing home. I hope my kids never put me in one either. Senior citizens are treated like shit these days. I also would like to die before I get that old, unless I am some sort of super strength old woman.

"found that the mortality ratio was the lowest in fish eaters (0.82) followed by vegetarians (0.84) and occasional meat eaters (0.84) and which was then followed by regular meat eaters (1.0) and vegan (1.0)"

Cats are the same, we make up their names and our love for them is real.
Listen up, I gotta ask you, how can we be so cruel?

My true compassion is for all living things and not just the ones who are cute so I do what I can.
I wanna save lives and I've got a plan.
Under the table he'll eat your dinner like the veggies we can't stand.
What kind of meal would he make?
We don't want to ask it.
Tradition is all that keeps him alive.

review of i am animal: the story of ingrid newkirk and peta
I grew up disliking PETA because of the things I had heard about them: throwing pies at people, extreme activism, standing in the way of medical research, etc. Well, this documentary pretty much confirmed all that but gave me a new perspective: PETA may not be "as bad" as I thought after all.
Basically, this is a documentary about Ingrid Newkirk, the British co-founder of PETA, and the organization itself. We see how they discuss situations, infiltrate organizations and plan 'extreme' demonstrations. We also get perspectives on PETA from different animal rights organizations.
According to the show, PETA does not seem to be liked by other animal rights groups. However, one does start to get a sense that PETA may have a role to play in our society - a role that those other groups are not performing. Ingrid shamelessly admits that much of what they do is to elicit shock value to get a "soundbyte" on the news. Otherwise, the public will hear nothing.
The program also indicates that there are very few "checks and balances" in the area of animal rights - so perhaps we need a wild and extreme attention getting group to get some knowledge out there. While I watched, I realized that I don't want a company to have a blank check to do anything to animals. It seems like it's often very hard to know what they're doing at all. Ignorance is bliss, but I'm not sure I want that kind of bliss.
I may disagree with PETA's ultimate agenda (there are some hints about that from the co-founder that left), but for now, I dislike PETA a whole lot less.
Whatever your views on PETA, this documentary is well worth the time. It's challenging, informative and frank.
i recommend everyone watch this documentary

If you attempted to press organic food now, wouldn't you alienate the working class by identifying with bourgeois characteristics (name one working class person who buys organic or shops at whole foods) sure, he may define himself as working class in terms of ownership in the means of production, but his prestige and status alienate him from the industrial sectors (ours) that seek to gain the most from the workers liberation.

i know many poor people/hippies/anarchist who are vegans and who shop at whole foods.
the high price of organic food is a huuuuge problem. part of the problem lies with our governments tax policies. we need to be giving tax breaks to organic farmers, instead of giving tax cuts to multi national corporations who produce genetically modified food.

In layman's terms is that the pressing organic, along with vegetarian and vegan food alienates a significant portion of the populations, ie the working class.
Either way i feel like brining up this article.

part of the problem with capitalism is, only the wealthy are allowed to participate in consumer activism. this is do to the fact that organic food, fair trade products, sweatshop free clothing cost more than there traditional counterparts. i have a huuuge problem with this, i think we need to rework our entire tax system, and start giving tax breaks to ethical corporations in order to keep prices down on the products mentioned above. of coarse that would be more like a band aid on the problem, i seek to abolish capitalism and the wage slave system which is a component of capitalism.

that my friend is a generalized statement. do you honesty think the bourgeois class is the only group of people that eats organic food? organic food did not even gain popularity in america with the wealthy up until the 90's. i will take you to my local health food store in little five points atlanta. i promise you will see poor people, rich people, black people, mexicans, indians, anarchist, liberals, hippies, punks, conservatives, people from all walks of life.

Humans are not "superior" to animals in some sort of universalist externalistic sense. But we are more important to animals relative to human society.
There is no "morality" or "value" outside of human society; we invented such thing. Wolves do not feel "regret" or "empathy" after they slaughter an animal, nor do they view the animal as "inferior" to them, they just eat it!
Animals simply do not exist within a moral or rational social framework and the idea of some sort of "commonality of species" is just pure postmodern liberal superstition, no matter whether you characterize humans as being "better than" or "equal to" other species.
Now, on the practical stuff, most of the "humans are better crowd" has it right. "Rights" for animals are pure nonsense.

well... we most certainly don't need to eat meat for survival, scientists have created plenty of alternatives. so in way, we have evolved to the point where we don't need meat for survival.
plus, there's many environment/morality issues with factory farming that has nothing to do with the actual slaughter of animals. like the cutting down of forest/rainforest to make way for grazing animals, or the fact that the majority of grains grown in american goes to feed live stock instead of starving humans, or the fact that factory farms are the leading pollutants in the world.

The advancement of an alternative is very valid, just as we now have the alternative of buying any meat we with from a butcher, as opposed to hunting and killing it.
However, the advancement of an alternative doesn't mean we must engage in it. For example, I have the choice of driving a hybrid car or not, simply because science has created an alternative certainly doesn't mean I need to use it.
The grain grown in America to feed live stock is more profitable to the people growing it than if it was sold for commercial consumption.
You still fail to address the issue I raised and fall back on the moral wrong of killing animals, when it can be debated that there is no moral issue in doing so.

commercialized butcher shops have been around for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. would meat substitutes not be a natural progression for the human species? would the fact that we no longer have to rely upon the slaughter of innocent animals, cut down forest, feed farm animals grains, etc. be natural human progression?
once again, improving cars gas mileage is natural human progression.
capitalism - putting profit over human lives, the environment, and animal welfare for over 200 years.
in my own humble opinion, i feel that enslaving and slaughtering animals is very cruel and immoral. i try to picture myself as an animal: would i like to be couped up in cages, kicked at, spit at, eyes gouged at, throat slit, etc.? no, i fucking wouldn't.

Ugh, this is so true. I was in one to watch my brother perform a few years ago (high school jazz band did some visits) and my dad had this conversation with the old dentist. There were two buildings there, and they were wheeling in people from the other building. As you cozy into your bed tonight, try to imagine the pain and the suffering that they endure day after day and night after night. Next time you get some soap in your eyes, try to imagine that pain for 3 or 4 days at a time. Next time you have a stomach ache, try to imagine liquid plumber being poured down your throat till you puke so much blood that you bleed to death. Next time you bump your head, try to imagine being a monkey and getting a steel plate smashed into your skull at 50 miles per hour. Then, only then should you feel compelled to tell me that I'm wrong about my opinions. For all these things have happened in the name of science. They continue in abundance till this day."

"Do we, as humans, having an ability to reason and to communicate abstract ideas verbally and in writing, and to form ethical and moral judgments using the accumulated knowledge of the ages, have the right to take the lives of other sentient organisms, particularly when we are not forced to do so by hunger or dietary need, but rather do so for the somewhat frivolous reason that we like the taste of meat? Belief in a higher being requires a jump of faith, something that is outside yourself that is capable of the humanly impossible. Without that leap it is impossible to explain because that is the essence of religion and of faith, and to your point, Christianity.

The third would say that would be equally morally culpable by stepping on an ant as I would by killing a person, which is ridiculous on its face.
The second makes a point that is the most valid. However, killing something for the taste is reason enough if we are in a position to do so. Call that might makes right, but the alternative isn't appealing to the majority of people, if it were we'd all be vegan. I'm well aware this sounds like, "well everyone is doing it so it is ok..." I do not wish that to be my point. Rather I recommend that you realize that society has developed certain habits, such as eating meat, that are ingrained and to believe we could change them on a whim is absurd.
I will tell him his opinions are wrong. Just like testing on animals for scientific gain is fair regardless of the harm to animals because it promotes a greater good. In the case of killing animals for food it creates industry, jobs, and other economic gains. These gains are at the cost of beings which don't contribute in any way other than being food (or at least you've given me no ways they do).

Belief in a higher being requires a jump of faith, something that is outside yourself that is capable of the humanly impossible. Without that leap it is impossible to explain because that is the essence of religion and of faith, and to your point, Christianity.
The fact that you see no evidence of God's existence isn't proof that it isn't true. Common logically fallacy. I merely asked you to explain your point of view, but by the substance of your post I assume you can't.
yeah, you're right. the earth was created in 6 days. humans walked the earth the same time as dinosaurs. the first woman was created from a mans ribcage. snakes can talk. the noahs ark story reeks with with credibility.

Yeah you're right, animals are equal to humans, ants are vital to the survival of humanity, anything that can feel should be treated the same, and cows shouldn't be eaten,

yeah, i do believe that all animals are created equally. i do believe that animals should be out in the wild, not couped up in cages, and free from human control. just as you believe in creatism and the stories in the bible.
i've explained to you time and again why i'm vegan. i would not torture an animal. i would not want someone to torture me. i have compassion for vulnerable animals who have done nothing to deserve brutal and inhumane treatment. why is that so hard for you to grasp?

I worked at one for about nine months. That place was like a high school... so much drama, haha.
yeah i worked at a nursing home for about 3 years in one of the cafeterias. And I agree the place is just like high school, so much stupid drama. Also there is a smell there. every night I'd get off of work i could feel it on my clothes and skin and couldn't wait to take a shower and get the old people smell off. I plan on living to 100, and in good health so I won't be in one of those places..

When I had to visit great-grandparents in old folks' homes, I was terrified. Not only do they smell, there truly are some scary people in there.
I feel bad for them and for thinking that, but half of them are so senile and comatose, you can't help but feel completely fucking paralyzed with fear as a child.

I work at a retirement center, most retirement homes are in poor condition but im lucky enough to work in a upper scale one that used to be a luxury hotel. I love old people i think they are real fun to talk to, i think people get the wrong idea of them because they usually dont talk to them.

With all the recent bands getting signed (FTSK, Metro Station, The Cab, etc.), I'm pretty sure you can, too. America loves crap!

Yesterday one of my friends lent me this book called EMS: The Job of Your Life. It's like a collection of stories/situations from an EMT worker and his co-workers. Really entertaining, interesting stuff in there. Especially the chapter titled "Nursing Home Nightmares". And also, "Sex Injuries".
Amazing.
