I know that people seem tired of the "Best of..." posts, so I figured I'd start a new one. Is there anything that people were seriously disappointed in this year? I know that I had a lot of things that I had really high expectations for, and just turned out to not meet them. OK, here goes. I'm sure this will be an unpopular post, but we'll see...
Also, I haven't read every post, but I don't think I saw anyone put NOFX's new CD in their "Best Of" list. Why?
OK, here goes with the disappointments...
5) Yellowcard/Brand New/Straylight Run/Jamisonparker - These bands, all lumped together, probably with others, basically comprise what I like to call the "overhyped" bands from this site. Not to say that any of these bands are bad, because they're not. I just think that there's way too much hype and not enough substance. Don't get me wrong, I really like some songs by these bands (Yellowcard's "Breathing" and Brand New's "Sic Transit Gloria..." especially), but I think that all these CDs aren't overly spectacular. Have fun with this one, I'm sure people won't like me bashing these bands. Ha.
4) Lucky Boys Confusion - Commitment - I felt that this CD did not AT ALL live up to the standard they had set on their previous albums. It was super poppy (not that going poppy is bad...), and fairly drab and uninteresting. It certainly has some high points (I love the song "Atari"), but for the most part, this CD is just sitting around not getting played.
3) Punk Goes Acoustic - There was SO much waiting for this CD. It was seemingly pushed back forever and when it finally came out, well, I can say it certainly was not worth the wait. There were of course its high points (Thrice's "Trust" and The Atari's song are both excellent), and there are its very not-high points, like many songs, where the singer seems to strain to reach the notes. I don't know. I guess I just expected more.
2) Blink-182 - Blink-182 - OK, I really wanted to make this my number 1 disappontment, but I figured the fallout from that would be too serious. Anyway, with that said, I really really do not like this album. Maybe it's because I didn't want Blink to change. Maybe it's because "Feeling This" reminds me too much of System of a Down's "Chop Suey" (OK, not really, but think about it. "I'm feeling this!" and "You wanted to!". Same thing...). Maybe it's because the songs are slow and deep and have meaning and are essentially the anti-Blink-182. Whatever it is, this CD certainly did not grow on me at all. I gave it a chance, I really did, and the more I listened, the more I didn't like it. I guess I just need the Blink-182 that sings fast songs about poop and boobs, and not the more "mature" band. Oh well.
1) Catch-22 - Dinosaur Sounds - OK, this really is my number one disappointment, not the Blink CD. I love Catch-22, and consider them one of the few ska bands that I can honestly still listen to and not get too bored with. The way that they (used to) combine ska with elements of punk and hardcore is just excellent, and I guess I'm a sucker from their music because they're basically from my backyard in Central NJ. I was really excited for this new album, because I haven't heard anything from them in a few years, and the last time I saw them live (I think last year) was incredible. Unfortunately, that all has disappeared on the new album. I knew that they lost their singer, but the band pulled off everything flawlessly live, so I figured that this new album would be more of the same. But. I was wrong. Gone is the "fast-talking" singing style, aggressive music, and hardcore elements that has made Catch-22 unique in a fairly generic ska scene. In its place is new singer(s) whose voices are mediocre at best (It's not a surprise then, that the best song on the CD is the instrumental at the end), boring and unoriginal music that can be stolen from any punk/emo cd released in the past 3 years, and basically a lack of the typicall Catch-22 aggression. However, I'm sure they still rock live, and I won't blatantly give up on them. (I had to end this on an up note, because after all, I'm not in the band, I'm just a fan, and what do they owe me?? Haha.). Also, with this said, if anyone is still longing for the old Catch-22, check out Streetlight Manifesto. Their CD rules, and they are just incredible live. The band has former members of Catch-22, and are very very impressive.
OK, so that's all. I look forward to reading some (probably angry) responses.

Thursday - War All The Time
i respect you for not jacking off all over brand new/yellow card/straylight run/ jamison parker like everyone else on these forums do.
thanks for being honest
my disapointment of the year would have to be the movielife "40 hour train...) seriously, no one even talked about this record until the band broke up, it wasnt a very strong release. compaired to "its go time" this was crap.

the brand new cd was deffinetly a dissapointment... their show made up for it. even more of a dissapointment was that desaparecidos just dropped off the plea for peace tour and their record wont come out for a really long time

Now, this is my opinion, and you can attempt to yell at me if you need to...but I think the only album released this year that got way more hype than it deserved, and was nowhere near as good as it was made out to be....is Thursday's new record, 'War All The Time'. Sure, theres a few tracks I like. And those are really strong songs. But for the most part, it just doesnt do much for me. But, that's just me.
As for you, Adam, being dissapointed with the Blink 182 album. That's fine. As long as you gave it an honest chance, and at least..tried to like it. It doesn't bother me when people give it an honest chance, and still can't get into it. It's the comments from other people saying it sucks simply because they've changed styles a bit..that's what gets me.

I couldn't agree more...while I like Dinosaur Sounds (they realize they no longer can pull off Old Catch 22, so they changed their style) it simply isn't as good as any of their past releases. Add on to that the fact that the cd is a disappointing 30 minutes long, and it equals a pretty big let down. I'm still a Catch 22 fan (I just saw them on Dec 27th for like the 6th time) but they have definitely slipped in my book.
Streetlight Manifesto is exactly how I wish Catch 22 would sound today had they not gone through so many changes. I don't know if you've heard of Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution before, but if not, I definitely suggest checking them out. It's the guys from SM and about 6 other people in a huge acoustic band. They play some amazing stuff. their site is www.acousticbandits.com (http://www.acousticbandits.com)

Yeah, same goes for me.
I really love the blink and thursday albums. they exceeded my expectations and were among my favorite albums of the year. i also love the movielife cd and i never skip any tracks when i listen to it. the most disappointing CD for me would have to be from rancid. they seem to get worse and worse with every release.

While 311 is my favorite band, I was slightly dissapointed in their latest album "Evolver" ... Maybe I'm just looking for them to create an updated version of the Blue Album or Grassroots, but I was a little uncomfortable with their sound on this album...
On a side note, anything that RATM has done in these past few years is also dissapointing...
Thank You...

ya, blink 182 was the biggest disappointment for this year, the past few years, and many years to come...I agree with the original poster...this new "mature" style doesn't work for me...really doesn't.

Wrong. 2000 is the best punk album of the last 10 years, and I dont give a fuck how many people disagree with me on that. I dont think Indestructible was as good as some of their other stuff, but theyve gotten older, theyre staying true to who they are, theyre not scrappy 20 year old punks anymore, theyre in their 30s, and their lives were falling apart when they wrote that album. I wasnt disappointed, but I agree that it wasnt their best.

i have to say that there is definitely alot of hype over brand new/jamisonparker/yellowcard, even though i happen to like all the bands. But, i think when bands put out something that is either different than what they had produced prior to the cd, or they are the "new thing", they tend to get more exposure than others. Straylight Run can be clumped into that group too...but, again, I like ALL the bands, brand new is one of my favorites, but i dont believe in overhype.
i like blink182's new cd... its fun.
biggest disappointment of 2003: ticketbastard's outrageous prices lol

I disagree on several of those points, but I'll leave it at that, there's not point in even arguing about this at all. You make valid points tho ...
After Yellowcard's 'One for the Kids' I knew they would never match it, so my expectations weren't very high for Ocean Avenue. Brand New definetly isn't my favourite band, and although their latest album was quite good, I think that Your Favourite Weapon was much better. The new Blink album was definetly an impression of how much range this band can work with. Punk Goes Acoustic wasn't as good as we all thought it would be because the acoustic versions of songs had lost its edge by then, and they were somewhat boring because of it ... when acoustic punk first became 'popular' among bands we love, it was cool ... but then it just went downhill from there, it was something that couldn't last a very long time.
Meh, that's life.

Like someone said before the movielife cd was very disappointing. I thought it wasn't even close to being as good as "This Time Next Year" which is one of my favorite cd's ever. It does suck that they broke up but it's even shittier that they went out with an average cd. They might as well have broken up after this time next year.

the biggest damn dissapointment to me was the new fucking ataris cd, what the hell?

12/29/03, 05:50 PM
I agree with the ataris, dashboard, and yellowcard. Although Ataris came out with one of my favorite songs of the year (So Long Astoria) the rest of the album seemed bland. songs 6-8 seemed very reminiscenet of one another and seemed like filler. dashboard was definitely crap. sheesh, i wish i didn't buy that. yellowcard was good, but definitely not grounbreaking or as special as this website makes it out to be. pop-punk w/ a violin. that's it. nothing amazing. good summer album. won't get me through tough times.

my biggest dissappointment was the ataris by far. their sound changed way too much and much more dramatical. ive been an ataris fan for years. anywhere but here/blue skies/even end is forever are all much better cds than so long astoria. and they kept assuring everyone they werent gonna change...i lost a bit of respect for them after this album.
the movielifes latest/last was a damn good album in my opinion. you just have to be more open to the idea of a different sound from them maybe. while my favorite movielife song is by far 'once in a row', songs like jamestown, or scary of the new cd are damn good too..
and with that im spent...

major dissappointments. hmm i would say the early november.. they are awesome but i liked for all of this 10 times more than the rooms too cold. i liked the more rock like music in the ep.
also i'd say from autumn to ashes. their first CD was madd good. and the new one is jsut ok.
and last but not least rufio, 1985 is just nothing compared to perhaps i suppose. 1985 is not as well put together and i don't like the recording of scotts voice. and i also find a lot of the songs repeditive. but i still love rufio.

truer words were never spokenand from what ive heard, they aint changing back. something about some guy going to kill himself until he heard "so long astoria" and now they wanna make music that people will listen to on their death beds and say "eh, never mind" so now melow dramatic music from the ataris, but im sure a well placed kick to the nuts will change their minds:evil:
