I picked up George Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh album and it got me thinking about the Beatles solo careers so which of the four Beatles do you think put out the best solo material. What are your favorite, albums, songs, etc.?

Do you know what it was?
Do you just not like his music too much?

Ringo's new album is really, really solid. Most people won't give it a chance because they don't like his previous solo stuff, but I've been digging it since it released in January.

John definitely.

I do need to give the new Ringo album a listen and I definitely agree with Ben about being able to sing, but not write as well. Didn't he only write 2 songs with the Beatles or something like that?

Lennon.

This one by any chance? Apparently I was obsessed with it as a very young child.

And to answer the question, Paul. Although I think I accidentally voted for John.

I'm tired of you being so dark and brooding, when I'm so impish and whimsical!

as for as being the most successful most def. paul, but when it came to lyrics and better albums it would go to lennon. though ringo would come before george for third place being that not only did he write some catchy songs in the beatles but even his solo career have catchy songs as well

I voted McCartney cause I'm a sucker for Band on the Run and Jet.

Easily John. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band is better than most Beatles albums. He'll probably win on the back of Imagine though.

Lennon. McCartney's got some great stuff too and Liverpool 8 was nice. I've never heard a Harrison solo album though.

I liked Lennon more in the Beatles, but I prefer Paul's solo stuff for some reason.

George is underrated.
Harrison not only penned some of the best Beatles tracks, but was both a highly talented guitarist and an extremely under-appreciated songwriter in his own right. Possibly my favorite of the four in terms of solo work, but they each have their own pros and cons. I do believe John has had the most influence as a solo artist, having a lot to do with his activist approach and generally rebellious attitude, but that doesn't mean he was necessarily the best.

You peeps are crazy. George wins this one handily.

All Things Must Pass, Concert For Bangladesh, Living In The Material World, Dark Horse, and Cloud 9 are all great. His electronic stuff was really neat too, years ahead of his time. And "Something" is the best song the Beatles ever recorded.

Lennon follows not too far behind. Plastic Ono Band and Imagine were great. He had a few others that were good, but nothing to flip out over. Ringo was really hit and miss, but probably better than most people give him credit for. And sorry but, nothing Paul did after Band On The Run is even listenable. I mean seriously... wow. If ever a songwriter really needed the push and pull dynamic of a band, it was him. How do you go from "Yesterday" to "Ebony and Ivory"? No thanks.

But really.... The Beatles were one of those instances where the whole is more than the sum of its parts. The only solo album that can even rank alongside the band albums is All Things Must Pass. Everything else pales in comparison to even the worst Beatles album. When they four of them came together there was just a certain magic there, and none of them were able to capture it on their own except for a lovely little triple album by the quiet one.
