Lemons Are Louder Than Rocks - Gallop & Other Distorted Love Songs

The art-pop quintet of Lemons Are Louder Than Rocks sound as giddy as a child jumping on a bed as the band romps cheerfully through their latest release Gallop & Other Distorted Love Songs. Their quirky rhythmic movements and whimsical melodic patterns are reflective of the avant-pop mechanisms of The Flaming Lips. The band decided after releasing several EP’s that they would opt for a full-length album this time, which would string together bits and pieces from their EP’s. That album became Gallop & Other Distorted Love Songs, which carves out folksy melodies but not with a traditional folk fare; it’s poppy but not of the conventional type that fits into mainstream. The music is off-center, though it keeps the movements hopping with an infectious beat decked in high pitched-recorder tones and jangly tambourines.
The folk-pop accouterments garnishing tracks like “Who Are You Dreaming Of” and “She Blew a Kiss” have playful theatrics with loose and limber coils stationing orchestral puffs systematically along the segments with a likeness to The Polyphonic Spree. The music thumps softly and hums tuneful like The Seven Dwarfs going off to work in the Disney show classic Snow White. There is a child-like innocence in songs like “Better Than Before” and “Roastbeef Sammich” with an upbeat step leading the way. Sometimes the songs seem to create a mythical world that is jovial and has a fancy-free swing to it like a mythical “Toyland” in selections like “Keep My Bag” and “Gallop.” Other songs have quirky, experimental edges to them like “That’s That” and “E-T-I-K-I=G-O” with odd angled chord flings and zany ping-pong effects. And then there are those songs which have lo-fi ripples and folksy leanings which conjure up a bluesy vibe in ditties like “Looking at Me” and “Good Idea.”
Lemons Are Louder Than Rocks give fans an alternative to the regular outlet of pop by mounting it from a different perspective, while keeping it melodic sounding through its experimental phases. They are a band that makes a difference in the pop world with their first full-length album filled with indie-pop charisma and flighty rhythms. If Gallop & Other Distorted Love Songs was made into a Disney cartoon, the enchanted world would have a zany look but still feel as cheerful as its portrayal in classic pictorials.
