I think that Elephant Shell is extremely addictive. They're not over-hyped, they deserve it.
Discuss.

I am really enjoying it, but with that said, I agree with Pitchfork's sentiment that I kind of expected bigger things on this, and while it's fun and catchy, musically it's kind of middle-of-the-road.

Awesome band.
Elephant Shell isn't quite as good as A Lesson In Crime, but I still like it more each time I listen to it.
Yeah the full length is dissapointingly pretty good and not fantastic like expected.
I didn't get this at all.

Disagree. Quite a few bands aren't given nearly enough attention.

Yeah, like the 5 bands/artists that each person thinks aren't given enough recognition. The other 99.999% of bands are then "over-hyped, overrated."
Even if they were over-hyped at one point, from what I've read/heard, this album hasn't been getting particularly good reviews anyway (outside of the AP.net review). Can't see how they are still over-hyped given that. Unless virtually all bands/artists are over-hyped.

I'm sure you could name me countless artists that aren't given enough recognition. Anyone truly into music probably can. It's a rather sweeping generalization to claim that virtually everything is over-hyped. Besides, a portion of the acts remaining would be adequately "hyped" leaving those over-hyped with a far smaller percentage anyway.

The music they write doesn't warrant the attention they receive. It isn't so much the favorable/unfavorable reviews that are pertinent, but rather their sudden prominence and individuals name-dropping them everywhere you look.

A sweeping generalization that is correct. That's why people so comfortably throw it out all the time. You or I could name all the acts that we feel aren't given due attention and it's still such a percentage of acts within the larger picture.

I'll accept that, although like I said I disagree.

In my rather limited interaction with you, I find you to be above this, but it sounds a lot to me like the "this band got too popular so now they suck" attitude that so many people carry. I'm sure that's not how you intended it to come off, but that's what it sounds like.

This is merely my opinion and the acts I find unworthy of their prominence are only so in certain musical circles. With that being said, within my framework and coupling the under-recognized with those given adequate attention, it isn't as lopsided as you would make it seem.
I'll accept that, although like I said I disagree.
That's fair.

haha that was never my intent. I've always disliked this band, from when they were playing in my friend's basements to this day. It's just that before the past year and a half or so, they could suck and be off my radar for the most part. This is no longer possible.

I'm digging Elephant Shell, but I've found that, one of the reasons I enjoyed them so much was that they always came in bite-sized portions. Their two EPs were personal pan pizzas comprised of barely 2-minute long toppings. Whereas an entire LP of the same is far too filling. That's a personal problem, I know. I also find the vocals slightly jarring. On the EPs, there was a slight emotional disconnect, possibly due to the megaphony sound. On the LP, it's as though Dave Monks is trying to actually sing, and it isn't bad, but it's not what I initially fell in love with. It's as though they've conformed to that midwestern umbrella emo sound of the rest of their Saddle Creek peers.
All things considered, it's still a fun debut LP and I'm glad they found a home at Saddle Creek.

I was really suprised to see they ended up there, given the relative buzz around them when they came out.

Me too. Saddle Creek isn't the smallest of indie labels, but given the lip service Spin, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, the blogosphere and fans were throwing at the band, I'd assumed they'd land at a larger, more prominent label. I remember hearing word that V2 was trying to sign them.

It's probably much smarter on their part as is. Saddle Creek probably gives them more room to do what they want to do, while still offering a fair amount of influence within the music world.

Most definitely. I'd imagine there's much more freedom at Saddle Creek than V2 would have offered. That said, I do find it odd that they are sounding more like fellow Saddle Creek bands with this latest album.

After making this thread way long ago, I still don't feel they're overrated.
I guess I'm one of the very few who likes Elephant Shell but I would probably take it over A Lesson In Crime. I can't say I've listened to the new one a whole lot since I bought it, but I love when I do and this makes me want to go put it on. :-)
