With my relatively limited experience in discussions on this website, it seems to me that most people on ap.net are pretty open minded.

But the open-mindedness seems to be compromised whenever someone brings up scientology. Why is there such a strong opposition to scientology?

Because "open minded" means open MINDed... that is to say, not just accepting anything and everything, but using your actual mind and thinking about things.

And there is no way short of lunacy that you can look at Scientology and not think it is retarded, and if you know anything about it... criminal as well. They will take you for every cent you own.

Remember kids, open MINDed. Use your minds. Think about things. Accepting everything is stupid, a plant could do that. Plants DO do that.

Scientology is absurd. However, people really need to stop making such a big deal of it--all organized religion is fucking strange.

Scientology is a fuckin business made to steal money from people who need faith.

Btw have you heard about Anonymous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_%28group%29) and their Project Chanology ? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Chanology) I saw that on TV the other day, this is getting intense.

Scientology is just as absurd as every other religion.

The one thing I won't deny them, is that their opposition to psychiatry is right on the money.

The rise of the acceptance of psychiatry/anti-depressants is very dangerous indeed.

i'd say that there are way to many people being prescribed psychiatric drugs (especially with things like ADHD). but there are also millions of people who aren't capable of functioning without them.

I give it as little credit as I give every other religion.

Because it was based off of the writings of a science fiction writer? To me that is tantamount to basing a religion off of Star Wars.

Scientology, objectively speaking, is more moronic than some of the other belief systems.

I wish I were lying, but I've met people who are in the Navy with my friend, and the religion on their dog tags says Jedi.

I don't understand how people can be tricked into the schemes that scientology pulls off. People need to be more aware of the things they are entering.

the only positive of scientology is that it's amusing. negatives include money stealing, taking advantage of the courts, lying, and deceiving others into completely false security. so... it's not TOO bad, amirite?

The problem with Scientology is that it's not a religion, but instead a dangerous cult disguised as a religion. It as manufactured to make money and it has and continues to kill people.

People can believe whatever they want, but when it starts getting dangerous that's when it crosses the line...

My mom switched churches a lot growing up, so I have exposure to a fair amount of Catholic churches.

Never, EVER did any of them try to milk us for money the way Scientology does. The worst you get in a Catholic church is a lecture about how the church needs money coming from the priest to the entire congregation... which you can subsequently ignore with absolutely no consequences. But even that is fairly rare.

Furthermore considering we were poor, we actually had a few churches donate us Christmas dinners and stuff.

So, maybe sort of like Catholicism... except not really, at all.

that was nice of the church to donate food to your family... still doesn't change the fact that the vatican collaborated with the nazis.

I have also studied a fair amount of World War II and I never see much of anything substantial to back up this claim.

And sadly, pretty much everyone was kissing Hitler's ass until 1937, which is kind of sad considering he started oppressing the Jews years earlier.

The Reichskonkordat was, in effect, a treaty of non-aggression between the Nazis and the Vatican. Basically, the Vatican, more Pious XXII, could have given a rats ass about what Hitler was doing.

I was at a Catholic Church once and heard this message.
"I don't want to see a check for less than fifty dollars in this offering plate!".
Me and my dad walked out, he's refused to go to a church since.

Huh.
I was raised a Catholic, and never heard anything like this. But I'm not at all surprised.
I think pretty much all religions are scams. Some are just older and more socially accepted than others.

their religion is the opposite of open minded. go live and work in downtown clearwater fl for a year. Youll see what i mean. the church owns every building downtown and they crowd the streets in their matching cardigans. Its really nuts

the only thing they cared about was not getting blown up or burned down. The vatican couldnt stop the impending war, they could only prevent themselves from impending destruction.
think of all the timeless relics lost in that conflict.

Because its creation story involves transporting humans from mars to earth in spaceships then dropping them into a volcano and dropping a H-bombs in. the creator of the "religion" is quoted as saying "The best way to make a million dollars is to start a religion."

That stuff is pricesless. I was lucky enough to be able to go to the Vatican Museum and the priceless artifacts given to the Church are remarkable. The "church" as an organization itself is not running low on funds. However you act like the Church is one unified business with a headquarters in Rome and different business "branches" all over the world, which couldnt be farther from the truth. These churches are separate entities often running low on money. The small profits they do turn are used to help the needy.

Its not like Churches here in America are running in order to turn a profit for the CEO, Pope Benedict.

All organized religions are cult-like, but Scientologists take it to a whole other level.
