This forum needs more jazz discussion, and Lena Horne is one of my favorite singers of all time so it seemed like a good place to start. Any other fans?
Some of my favorite songs from her would have to be Frankie and Johnny, Moanin' Low, Stormy Weather, etc. I picked up The Fabulous Lena Horne a few years ago when I saw it being sold for like a dollar on Amazon, a wonderful collection.

Not a big fan of prominent vocals in jazz.

I'm usually not either, but her voice is simply gorgeous, I can't help but love it. The video for "Stormy Weather":

I know, I didn't expect too many replies to begin with, but only one other person? Lena Horne was a huge part of jazz history, and was a great influence on the civil rights movement. She performed with amazing musicians, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw and tons of others. I know this isn't the type of music that is often discussed on AP, but I figured that if I was into it, there had to be at least a few others as well.

Craig and a few others should chime in soon enough.

Yeah probably. I tend to always make threads in the middle of the night when no one's on haha.

i love vocal jazz, my only fault with it (& this can sometimes apply to lena) is the vocal styles often become repetitive throughout many songs. that being said, wow her vocals are fantastic, the sheer amount of emotions it conveys is beautiful. i'm more a fan of songs rather than whole albums (& no i don't just mean her singles, i'm familiar with a fair chunk of her work). that classic "stormy weather" is a must hear

She's got a gorgeous voice. I'm not a huge fan of jazz vocals, but Stormy Weather is a beautiful song. I can't say I've heard much more from her.

Saw Cabin in the Sky the other day. On top of being gorgeous her voice is absolutely stunning. I really wish there were more musicals that she starred in. Thanks for that, racism.
