View Full Version : Alt Country/Red Dirt Country/Americana Anyone?

With some of the recent classic album discussions, I realized that the AP forums are in fact good for discussion on multiple genres and not just the stereotypical stuff I expected when I first discovered this place.
Therefore...
Do we have any Alt Country, Red Dirt/Texas Country, or Americana fans? I'm talking about the type of stuff that's great for road trips. It's awesome for tailgating at football games in the fall. You know the type of music that sounds good with a cold beer in hand outside on a warm day?
Tom Petty comes to mind. The Black Crowes have their moments. I recently got into some Limbeck. Some sections of Wilco's catalog fit well in these situations. Also, some of My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses can do the trick. Anyone ever heard The Refreshments? "Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big and Buzzy" is one of the most underrated albums of the 90's in my opinion. There's far more too it than the radio single "Banditos."
Springsteen obviously has his place here. Anyone ever check out Steve Earle? Any Dead Heads?
A lot of Texans prefer the "Red Dirt" variety of country music and actually can't stand the Tim McGraw's and Kenny Chesney's of the world. Stuff like old Pat Green, Robert Earl Keen, Shooter Jennings, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Charlie Robison, Randy Rogers Band, Chris Knight, even some old Willie.
I guess I'm just trying to start a discussion or get some rec's from other people who enjoy this type of stuff. I'm guessing this thread will be to page 2 within an hour or two though!

Early Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Ryan Adams, My Morning Jacket, Old Crow Medicine Show, Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin, Willie Nelson, Gram Parsons, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Grateful Dead, Whiskeytown, Emmy Lou Harris, Old 97's, Drive-By Truckers, The Parson Red Heads, anything Will Oldham-related, etc.
All good stuff. AP-approved acts like Limbeck and Lucero, not so much.

Nice list. I forgot Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. Ever try James McMurtry?
I'll be checking out Flying Burrito and Flowers From simply for their names alone!

Oh, and I'm not sure there's a sweeter voice than that of Emmy Lou.

I agree...impressive extensive catalog you've got there from what you just posted and what I've read from you in the past.

Not too keen on Crowell but Ely is quite good, especially Honky Tonk Masquerade.

My stats teacher was telling me that The Black Crowes started 420. Is this true? I figured it might be the place to ask because they were mentioned in the thread discription.

She's alright. Just not as amazing as she's made out to be.

Tough to beat Jerusalem.
That newer The Snake the Cross the Crown record, Cotton Teeth, is pretty good.

Ryan Adams (Easy Tiger plus his work with The Cardinals), and the obvious Tupelo/Son Volt. Billy Bragg is a great one, but largely unheard of in the states.

I haven't heard heaps but I love William Elliot Whitmore, Old Crow Medicine Show and Murder by Death (not sure if they're Americana).

Whitmore's got a really good voice but the music accompanying it isn't always great.

Dont see this genre discussed around here very often. Anybody a fan of Hayes Carll or Todd Snider? Two of the best song writers out there right now.

Holywood Town Hall is my personal favorite, but Tomorrow the Green Grass is a close second.

Being from west Texas, I usually just hear these two terms being used interchangeably. I'm not sure if there really is a difference, but I could be wrong.
