Tino's a close second behind Lou Gehrig.

So your favourite first baseman is someone who died over 40 years before you were born? Makes perfect sense.

I think it's stupid to claim someone is your favourite (insert position here) if you were never alive to see them play. So I guess you could say I do have a problem with that.

You're completely right about the subject of the thread, but the point I was trying to make still stands.

I could understand if someone made the claim that Gehrig is the best first baseman ever, but unless you were alive in the 30's to see him play, I think it's stupid to claim he's your favourite first baseman.

how can your favorite first baseman be someone you have never seen play?!?!

how can your favorite first baseman be someone you have never seen play?!?!i suppose the black and white newsreel footage of that era doesn't really count, as it's just highlight footage...if you want to get technical about it. but as a kid i read every book i could find on the dude. he has always been my favorite player (and therefore first baseman) based on performance, attitude, making lemonade out of body crippling lemons. but again, if we're narrowing it to people i've watched play, then tino martinez it is.

Totally agree, how can your favorite player be someone you werent even around to experience while they were playing? You can say that they are one of the greatest, but favorite is more of a personal preference from you watching a player play.

My favorite? I would have to go with John Olerud, just a class player who no matter what team he was on, even if it were the mets, i still would root for him.

that you've watched play should be implied, it was in the pitcher one, should be in all these.

So many great first basemen now and over the years...

Gotta go with Cecil and the Prince 1 and 2...wait no, the first base version of Matt Stairs is 1 then Cecil and the Prince.
Youklis is a lot of fun to watch when hes not playing against you.
John Kruk, enough said.
Mark Grace, the skinniest first basemen ever.
Frank Thomas back in the day.

then...Miguel Cabrera?

I was a career first basemen because I couldnt run or throw, just rake, so I have admiration for all these guys.

Love Mark Grace. And I'd love to have a lineup of 9 Kevin Youkilis' on my team. I hate that mother fucker for raking against the Tigers, but he's awesome.
