people who say it's a one trick pony probably listen to Dream Theater or some other kind of shitty prog band.
but seriously, a P-bass would do fine.

I'd recommend trying a Fender P-Bass or Jazz Bass and getting whichever one you think feels better. Either one is a great starter bass. When you go to buy it, ask them if they can set up the Action and Intonation for free. Usually places will charge about $40-$50 for this, but it only takes about 5 minutes of work so they will probably do it for free to make the sale.

fender p-bass is the best, i had a sound gear and it wasn't for me, i think i'm the only bassist out there that doesn't like active pickups, guess i am just a snob when it comes to bass

A Squire P-Bass is absolutely phenomenal if price is an issue

yea i dig tht,. I've got a Washburn XB 102 and I love it. I've tried other things and I could never fidn something that I liekd as much. It is just fantastic and you can really make it have any sound you want if you just fiddle aroudn with it a bit.

How much does a good Fender P-Bass cost? I was thinking of getting one myself, but since I already got a new Peavy guitar for my birthday, I will have to save up. Are there any decent cheap basses?
