is there any specific formula, or is pretty much how the artist/band thinks it should go? i know that singles are generally near the beginning, but i was just wondering.

Unless it's a concept album song are normally placed randomly.

Harder, more immediate tracks tend to open albums though, and longer more epic ones seem to be the standard for endings.

Dude, just put them in whatever order you want. You aren't a mixtape aficionado so it doesn't matter to anyone but you.

The flow of the mood I guess? However you want it to start and how you want it to end. Move slightly toward the mood of the ending song with each passing track.

traditionally, you put the songs you feel are the best in the beginning, unless it's a concept album, etc. Esp. if you're shopping your CD to labels or something, you want to have your best songs at the forefront. otherwise, yea, just make sure it flows well. there are a lot of factors.

Flow, whether it be lyrical or musical.

Songs that represent the enteriety of your band at the beginning. Best 2 Fast songs, a slow song or a 2, another couple fast songs, and epic songs at the end

Song order can make or break an album.

my guess would be the flow of the album musically. ive pondered this myself for a long time.
