So I have quite a few records, and I've decided I want to start collecting them. The only problem I have is I don't have a record player. Anyone know where I can find any moderately cheap ones, or what some good brands are?

records have seemed to have gone up in price alot in the past couple of years or atleast so i have noticed. this could also just be my change in music taste and new music I listen to just has more expensive records.

if you want "moderately cheap" stay away from newbury comics. overpriced.

and to know what type of music youre looking for would help too.

I ended up buying mine in Portsmouth Bullmoose for the same price.

I could never bring myself to spend 19 bucks on newly released music totaling only to 20 minutes.

on that note, since you're the stoner metal expert, is the meanderthal LP out yet? I've seen the CD in stores, but no rekkid.

nope. robotic says end of may it should be out. which sucks because that means they won't have it for when their tour hits boston this saturday. will have to pick it up when they come back with boris in july. i also heard something about it coming out on pic disk

word, that does suck. it also sucks that I can't go to the show saturday, because that'd probably a lot of fun.

I dunno if I'd pick it up on picture disk. I've heard horror stories of moderate playing resulting in wearing out of the picture, and I'm not one to just stare at my records.

i had to shell out 20 bucks for HWC discographer at the Relapse Store in Philly because I figured I would have had a battle getting it off ebay/traders online.

I have several pic disks and listened to each one like 2x. And I doubt Im going to the show on saturday just because my friends are leaving for tour for like all summer the following day. Plus, I'm gunna be droppin MAD money tonight at a show on vinyl. So I'll save my money for when I see these guys in July.

I think that was going for like $20 everywhere when it first came out, which is reasonable because its a 2xLP

not to be confused with Hydra Head/Robo's pressing of this I'd imagine.

I guess I'm not really sure, what's a good price for a record player?

it depends. what are you looking for? a turntable that you can plug into like a surround sound system or are you wanting something that comes with its own speakers?

Personally I got my record player that I have now and have been using for the past 3 years at a yard sale for $5. works fucking awesome. but recently I saw a sick turn table at bestbuy so I think I might go all out and get a whole new sound system soon.

other than that. try this website to search for stuff: www.google.com

I use it alot to search for things I'm interested in or want. It helps out a lot.

Yeah. I went the yardsale route. Got a 200$ turntable for 10$. It works great. Don't get sucked into those USB turntables. I think those are a joke. Spend the extra cash and get a better model. If you really intend to listen to the records you collect it'll be a good investment. There are good turntables for 180-250$. The ones that are 100-150$ work, but the people I know who have them complain a lot.

I'm thinking a turn table, I've got some speakers laying around that will work

well i mean, most big electronics stores are going to carry turntables between like 100-200 dollars, if that's not too much. you might luck out at thrift stores and garage sales, but even if you get a sweet deal, you're still going to want to buy a new needle because old needles can fuck up your records.

Do those nice 100-200 dollar turntables make a huge difference in the sound quality? because if not, fuck it, im not spending money on that shit till im out of school

its kinda old school, even has an 8-track player. its not like a retro looking one. looks like a really old vcr with a turntable on top

i don't think there'd be a huge difference if you have good speakers. as long as you don't have one of those lame cabinet top record players that come with cd players in them that are becoming more popular, you should be fine with sound quality.

unless you're like an audiophile but if you were, you'd probably be wanting to drop more than 200 on your turntable.

yeah, i really dont need a new system right now. everything sounds fine and even if it did sound better, i probably wouldnt be able to tell anyways

don't waste your time/money on a USB, they're just a gimmick (I don't get why people feel the need to go through a lengthy process to convert their records to mp3's when they can just download the tracks online)

pretty much anything with a belt drive and tonearm with moveable counterweight will do the trick, whether you pay $5 for it at Goodwill (worth a look) or $250 at some audiophile store.

Also, you'll need an amp if you don't already have one

Would a small guitar amp work? Cuz I have an old one....And do you use that as the speakers or what?

you could probably use a guitar amp if you really wanted to, though you might end up blowing it if you listen to a lot of bass-heavy music (or any music with bass really, depending on how loud/how much you listen to it).

Ok good to know

If you use a CD player then you will be able to buy a lead that hooks up your record player to it.

Any regular cd player?

Most have a phono cable socket in the back where you plug in these wires

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/images/stereo_phono_cable.jpg

One runs into your record player and the other end into your cd player.

That's how I play my records.

WOW! You are amazing! you offically get the award for best help of the night! Thanks so much, I have been uber confused at how these things work!
