Djin Djin (her latest album) recently won best contemporary world music album. I don't expect a lot of people to already know who this is, but if you're a fan of world music, gospel, jazz or soul, this is definitely someone you should keep an eye on. She's had many releases, a few were Africa only releases I think but you should definitely be able to get your hands on something if you know where to look. Any fans already?

She did a version of the intro song to Weeds: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gotNVfyVrl0&feature=related

And a video worth posting:

Haha I did. but - I wasn't contributing to any actual discussion of the artist. so checkmate.

one word to describe her, patchy. when she's good she's great, but there's always a few tunes per album i wish she'd have dropped altogether. luckily she's more often on target than not haha. her range of sounds & influences is brilliant, love the fusion of world beats. another one of thousands of artists who owes almost everything to the legendary fela kuti

this thread actually got me throwing on some cds last night. the majority of her "patchy" tunes i mentioned seem to be collaborations with other vocalists, they just don't sit well with me. great artist though, some really great music

Well you should. I don't see you getting into her as much as I am, but you might enjoy her if you look for a bit more of her stuff.

"sedjedo" with ziggy marley, "gimmie shelter" with joss stone, "pearls" with josh groban (santana sounds fine), etc. guest musicians sound great, vocalists... not a fan. someone i'd love to see live

this is cool though, besides ska & the odd other band, i didn't know ya listened to much world music

i haven't heard that one with ziggy marley unfortunately but i'm going to try and find it before i ask you for it haha. agreed on joss stone, but i don't like her anyway.

i try. my friend's dad introduces me to a lot when i'm there, a lot of world and classical that he knows i'll enjoy. remember when i sent you that video of the little girl from august rush? i found a lot of new music through her as well (related artists).

A great video to check out. I highly recommend anyone and everyone pick up Djin Djin, her newest album. It's completely amazing, full of soul and beauty, and it has a little something for everyone I think.

i've been listening to gimme shelter a lot more, and it's grown on me quite a bit. i don't think sedjedo is bad at all either, it's extremely laid back (which is expected from the guest artist) and has a really delightful sound to it overall.
