So I'm looking to purchase my very first synthesizer, but since I know next to nothing about them I was hoping for some help.

I'm into bands like Motion City Soundtrack, The Get Up Kids, The Junior Varsity, and Sherwood. I know 3/4ths of those bands use moogs, but since those can be a tad expensive, are they really worth the price? if not, are there any decent alternatives?

absolutely any information would be appreciated

Try taking a look at a Alesis Andromeda. Plenty of shit for you to tweak. Might be a bit expensive. Maybe not.

Moog's can be expensive, but they are definitely worth it. Nothing else sounds like a true analog synth. Check out the Little Phatty. It runs for about $1250.

In the more budget range though, The Alesis Micron, Korg MicroKorg and Roland SH-201 are all pretty sweet for the money.
