View Full Version : Your Favorite Album and Why?
What is your favorite album of all time and why? Yes, I know that the common answer would be that you love the music on it (obviously), but there should be more reason than that. Whether it be lyrical relation, sentimental value, etc. In depth explanation would be freaking awesome. This could be a great thread if people participate.
Edit: One sentence shouldn't sum up the album that defines your music taste and the main reason why 95% of you are here.
Slayer- South Of Heaven
Not only had Slayer made a classic thrash album (Reign In Blood), but they also put their insanity into a slower, more powerful form. South Of Heaven has the usual Slayer lyrics about Politics and hating god, but contains some of Tom Araya's best vocal work yet. The guitar work, despite being slower, shows some of the best work Slayer has done. Truly a classic in every sense of the word.
Kid A - Radiohead
After OK Computer, Thom had that breakdown and went into a writer's block and all that. Due to that, a more complex, "block style" of writing began to take place and this was Kid A. This album delved deep into Thom's head about his denial, depression, etc and it was some of the most personal lyrics Thom has ever penned. The flow of the album is almost perfect. Even treefingers fascinates me. Everything about this album was new and fresh at the time, and still is somewhat a fresh concept of music in today's scene. This album is Radiohead at the top of their game, and this album is absolutely the best of its genre. The rhodes piano work melds together perfectly with the tone of all of the songs (that it was played in) and worked out extremely well. The experimentation with different vocal effects (the title track, the national anthem) sounds amazing. The eeriness of idioteque keeps me up at night. The lyrics of that song fit perfectly with the tone of the music, it's wonderful. The production of this album is fantastic. Listen to In Limbo and tell me that it isn't. It's almost perfect imo. There are so many other things I could say about this album. It changed the way I think about music forever. I listen to it almost every day, a lot of the time twice a day. I don't think any other album could take it's place for me.

The Beatles - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
It has the best songs.
Everything I thought I knew about you is being thrown out the window!
I thought Fake Plastic Tress was your favourite song, thought Kid A was your favourite album, both wrong now.
Is Radiohead still your favourite band or have the Beatles replaced them as well?

I was thinking the same thing.
The Beatles - Abbey Road
The entire album flows so well together (outside of Octopus's Garden), that it blows my mind every time I hear it... especially the last half of the album.

I love Maxwell's silver hammer and oh darling. I can see why you don't like Maxwell's but, I think Octopus's garden is just such a weak song. probably if you put it on a sum 41 album it would get them a grammy, but compared to the rest of the album, its not worth listening to.

I really like Oh! Darling, and Maxwell's Silver Hammer is a good song, but Octopus's Garden isn't the best song, still not horrible though.

And I think mine would have to be End is Forever. The Ataris were one of the first pop-punk bands I discovered after blink, and that album has a great flow to it, and some of the best songs they've ever done ("Up Up Down Down...," "Fast Times...," "How I Spent My Summer Vacation").

the band solely responsible for getting me into music many years ago. music meant nothing to me before split enz, i didn't even notice it in the background, the enz were my first love of the art. this album became my favourite early on & has remained ever since. it's an album riddled with flaws & chaos, but it's often these flaws that define an art piece. passion, creativity & melody ring through. everything the enz ever did was relentlessly original, the real frantic energy & also the innocent vulnerability of the enz was probably best caught on this album, with their words engraining themselves within my mind very early on. while most people now-a-days won't ever get the crazy inner majestic wild ways of tim finn, he certainly created a fan out of me

Kids in the Way - Safe From The Losing Fight
i think that no matter what other kind of music i'll become interested in, this album will always have a space near and dear to my heart. it's from right at the beginning of KITW's musical career, and the lyrical content that ranges from deep spiritual maturity to simple juvenile rebellion rings completely true with my feelings and outlook on life. i can apply songs like 'scars that save', 'your knife, my back' and 'the end' directly to moments and experiences in my life and davey pelsue's voice always gives me chills. musically, i love the album and i think it represents everything that was ever amazing about Kids in the Way. not to mention everything that's ever been good (or bad) in my life, and the constant resonating belief that Christ will always be the final answer.

Third Eye Blind - Self Titled (1997)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41XZGYT5JQL._AA240_.jpg
It was the first album that I had ever really listened to well when I was younger. It came out when I was only 8 and I didn't really understand the subject matter at the time, but the music just clicked with me. Now eleven years later Third Eye Blind is still my favorite band and Blue and Out of Vein are also two of my favorites. The subject matter of the songs I can understand now and in some ways more than other relate to more. It has everything I believe a great rock album should have from the lyrics to the music to the production.
hmm...Something Corporate- Leaving Through the Window
Ever since the first time I heard "Drunk Girl", I was in love with the piano-rock band that was Something Corporate. Andrew McMahon's vocals complimented the style and sound perfectly, and the album set a new standard for me with music. It was something I compared music to when I found new bands, and it got me through the worst times of my life, and the long bus rides to school. It even provided the soundtrack to my dreams as I fell asleep because I left the cd on. It was just an all around perfect cd. It's also my inspiration for playing guitar.

It's a toss up between My Chem's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love.
My Chem's my favorite band and are the ones who really got me into music. I definitely wouldn't be on this site without them (I know that's a negative to some of you bastards). I feel a familiarness with these two albums that is very..comforting? I don't know how to describe it, but I've listened to these albums (and The Black Parade) so many times, they're probably the only albums where I know all or almost all the lyrics by heart. I don't think I'll ever put that much effort into other (non-My Chem lol) albums. I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love has no bad songs on it, totally solid all the way through. It also has most of the band's best lyrics, in my opinion. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge has I'm Not Okay which is a lame song and sometimes Interlude gets on my nerves, but I feel like this album captures what My Chemical Romance really is. It's like a slightly more polished Bullets but still maintains that edge that makes the band who they are.
So even if I don't listen to them as much as I used to, these albums and this band is very dear to me AND I'LL FLAME ANYONE WHO DARES SPEAK ILL OF THEM.

Sublime -Sublime
There are better albums than this one, even within the same genre... hell it's not even the best Sublime album. However, it was this album that made me expand my tastes beyond Rap and RnB, so it will forever be my favorite album. The reason it got me into rock as a whole was probably because it was just extremely accessible... lyrics were not deep in any way shape or form and the music itself was really chilled out.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
It's so unique, and while having an overall distinct mood compared to the rest of their work, the album itself has good diversity.
The writing -- Lyrically and musically are great, with Roger's inspiration and the emotion he puts into the album, and the overall meaning while seeming simple on the outside, is very complex when you read into it.
Musically -- you have some great Gilmour guitar work (His best solos IMO, both in Comfortably Numb). And it also has some of the best drum work (my favorite) in terms of matching the song moods...Nick does an awesome job. Just listening to the start of the album with the perfectly sporadic drum rolls, in In the Flesh?
Besides standing out among the other PF albums...it stands out even more for it's time period.
Also...a movie acompanies it, which is a great film and shows even further the emotional story, and even has some exclusive tracks which are fantastic.
To this day there has been nothing like it...

The Beatles - Abbey Road
Contains my favorite Beatles material in their grand finale before the so-so Let It Be.
Let It Be is amazing.
As for me, it's evidently Nick Drake's Pink Moon. In my mind the greatest singer-songwriter album of all time, Pink Moon is a chilling, sparse, and intensely relatable collection of songs. Drake's underrated writing comes off as quasi-haikus deftly dealing with death, despair, grief, melancholy, and other unsavory sentiments. He never indulges in pointlessly ornate verses and conveys his ideas in a terse, effective, and most importantly compelling manner. The sonic content on its end perfectly buttresses the lyrical messages from the twinkling piano on the title track to the final strums of an acoustic guitar on From The Morning. The flow is absolutely flawless and sees the songs operate as bridges leading one to another as opposed to mere entities bound together by a track listing. Whether it be the pensive Road or the instrumental Horn, Pink Moon hits one out of the park at every turn. Recorded in 2 nights in often no more than one take, these unadorned ditties sound oddly cinematic and wholly enthralling. Some may claim some bullshit Elliott Smith album is better and I'm glad to let them soak in their idiocy. This remarkable work is proof that a man and his trusty guitar are more than enough to create staggering, enduring music. Still the most haunting album I have ever been graced with, Pink Moon sits in a class of its own.

hmm...Something Corporate- Leaving Through the Window
Ever since the first time I heard "Drunk Girl", I was in love with the piano-rock band that was Something Corporate. Andrew McMahon's vocals complimented the style and sound perfectly, and the album set a new standard for me with music. It was something I compared music to when I found new bands, and it got me through the worst times of my life, and the long bus rides to school. It even provided the soundtrack to my dreams as I fell asleep because I left the cd on. It was just an all around perfect cd. It's also my inspiration for playing guitar.
2nd Place- Jason Mraz- Live at Java Joe's
hahahahaha
Sublime -Sublime
There are better albums than this one, even within the same genre... hell it's not even the best Sublime album. However, it was this album that made me expand my tastes beyond Rap and RnB, so it will forever be my favorite album. The reason it got me into rock as a whole was probably because it was just extremely accessible... lyrics were not deep in any way shape or form and the music itself was really chilled out.
Did not expect this from you.

We'll all know the truth someday.
let's talk about "the truth".
do you know how many times i've been dumped by girls because i'm bi and they can't handle that i've fooled around with guys? essentially every time. how about all the fights i got into in high school or how often my shit has been vandalized, how i've been attacked by dudes with knives or the psychological ramifications of not being able to be all that open with who i am because people like you?
that's the real truth here. the bible tells us that we're all sinners. you sin. you can't change that. you're fucked and according to your belief system, you need jesus. cool. so do GBLT people, and they're no worse than you. it's not YOUR place to be anti-homosexuality. you're only supposed to live your life according to the guidelines of the bible.
even if i admit that the bible says "don't be gay," which it doesn't, it still says don't do a lot of things that you do. i'm sure you covet other people's possessions. i'm sure you lie. i'm sure you judge people. you've judged me in this thread. you're definitely not humble as you preach anti-homosexual bullshit every chance you get.
the bottom line is, you're not being christian by condemning people like me because you're acting like you're not a sinner, and you are. jesus reached out to people who were obvious sinners like prostitutes, you shun them with your hateful rhetoric. this is why homophobia isn't christian. you don't accept GBLT people for what they are, you act like you're better than them and you're not following the path of your savior, who would accept people like me.
but seriously, the truth of the matter is, for all your whining and moaning that people treat you like shit, you really have no idea what the truth of this issue is. you're never going to know what it's like to not be straight and people like you are the reason people like matthew shepard get killed, because you mask your prejudices by claiming you don't hate gay people, which in turn legitimizes said prejudices and makes it harder for people like me to live out our lives the way we are.

1. Yes, but there's a way to erase your sins...does that count for sins you commit after baptizm? No, but it's the motivation that God's looking for. He wants to see that you're willing to change your sinful ways to follow him, and to try your hardest not sin, even though you might sometimes.
2. I really don't lie...or at least very rarely. and no, I don't really covet peoples' things either, i'm content with what I have...I do have a lot of things that most people don't have.

ah yes, you ignored everything i wrote to give stock answers that don't really apply. but seriously, you're sinning as you defend yourself by judging me. it contradicts your first part, since you, well, aren't trying not to judge me. if you were really practing what you preach you wouldn't even be in this argument to begin with.
and you started this first. when i made the Limp Wrist thread and you posted in it just to say gays can't be christian, which had nothing to do with the band or their music other than the fact that they are homosexuals. and even then, who fucking cares? we're on two sides of a culture war. it doesn't matter who starts it, it matters when it ends, and it won't end until people like you realize the error of your ways. I can't understand how you can sit here while I just told you all this horrible shit i've gone through for who i am and you be like "oh well you should change". You're fucking heartless. That's not christian. A christian would at least be like "oh wow that sucks, let me try to empathize." You're just like "well it's your fault, stop sinning".
i have a right to instigate this shit because it's a lot more important than any inane conversation we would be having about bands because it actually affects how people live their lives. if christians were persecuted, you could do the same thing.

The Rap albums I was stuck between were probably
OC - Word... Life
Goodie Mobb - Soul Food
2Pac - Me Against the World
Nas - Illmatic
Slick Rick - Great Adventures of...
Raekwon - OB4CL
ATCQ - Midnight Marauders
The Coup - Steal This Album
Prince Paul - Prince Among Thieves
Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother
and.. as I type this more are coming up. I am terrible at making decisions.
By the way, fan of Olivia Tremor Control? Listening to Dusk at Cubist Castle.. really great pop music. Also, Pink Moon is growing on me. Still don't like the title track, but the rest is pretty good..

It can't be let go. I don't get why people don't understand this, it's not a simple disagreement. Only one point of view can prevail, pro-gay or anti-gay. The only way we can "let it go" is people who are anti-gay drop it.

As people can tell, I am usually not very confrontational, but:
on the subject of opposing opinions, that's one thing, HOWEVER.
Intolerance is wrong, no matter how any side of an argument decides to slice it. I think the only thing I could ever be intolerant towards is intolerance.
Unless someone's actions/beliefs/thoughts/etc are harming and/or oppressing/threatening other people, then let them be.

Can't really argue that. It's outdated. I don't really know if its a reflection of our current society though or just something that no one has really tried to get rid of. Politicians should be spending their time on more important things than religion on currency, but of course they seem to spend more time on even less important things anyway.

you're ignorant. the implications of your ignorance are what oppress me. you can stop being ignorant and i'd respect you as much as someone who isn't, or you can be, and i'll still think you're ignorant.
see there's a difference here. it's not all about tolerance. this is a knowledge issue. to say "homosexuality is wrong" would imply that you know what it's like to be someone who isn't straight. You don't. You lack this knowledge, and making claims like you do is ignorant. I'm not going to respect someone who does that as much as I'll respect someone who isn't being ignorant. it's not even a part of this issue. i'd look at you just like i look at someone who says it takes no talent to scream or be in a noise band.
the problem is the implications. it's not a matter of being like "oh okay i respect that you think i'm a sexual deviant" since the way you think is inherently disrespectful to me.

You don't. You lack this knowledge, and making claims like you do is ignorant. I'm not going to respect someone who does that as much as I'll respect someone who isn't being ignorant. it's not even a part of this issue. i'd look at you just like i look at someone who says it takes no talent to scream or be in a noise band.
the problem is the implications. it's not a matter of being like "oh okay i respect that you think i'm a sexual deviant" since the way you think is inherently disrespectful to me.
...then this conversation is futile. we obviously have diferent definitions of what is deserving of respect.
unfortunately (or rather fortunately, this conversation has been done for a while) i'm going to bed. i have church tomorrow, and i'm gonna be dead during the service.
so, even though you don't share it, it's been a pleasure "chatting". :-)

i don't see how there's respect in stating "oh you're a sexual deviant". that's like saying "i respect you and you're a fucking asshole". but whatever.

Do you need it spelled out to you why that sentence was contradictory?
i believe that's what "pardon" implies?

If I remember correctly, it was because someone else in the thread commented on something about christianity. And then I randomly said something like "I find it odd/strange/funny that people think they can be homosexual and christian".
I wasn't talking about anyone in particular, not "spewing" anything out at anyone...I just seriously found it interesting that this kid on youtube did all this "research" and posted a video about being a homosexual + a christian.
Whatever comment was in that thread, reminded me of that video I saw earlier, and I for some reason I felt the need to post. Now, I realize it was kinda unnecessary, and kind of pointless, but hey...can't change the past.

No. you said "ROFL THERE'S A DUDE ON YOUTUBE WHO SAYS HE'S A GAY CHRISTIAN" which isn't at all what you're claiming here. ben posted a band shirt that said jerry falwell is rotting in hell, which has nothing to do with christianity and you came in there anyway. nevermind the fact that you used to call people **** and use gay as an insult around here until other people called you out on it.
but whatever.

1) you had no business being in there anyway.
2) why would you say something you knew would do nothing but inflame people. Fucking troll.
3) that's totally false. Anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord is a Christian. Kinda surprised you didn't know that simple fact.
