View Full Version : Where Bands got their Name From...

Hey all,

I saw EMO-tionRomance's post on the origin of your usernames, and it gave me this idea... Does anyone know any cool stories of how a band got their name?

For example, this is how Jimmy Eat world got their name... Two of Tom's brothers, Jimmy and Ed, were having an argument one day when the band was over for something. And while they were fighting Jimmy locked Ed out of his room. This got Ed quite a bit ticked off and brought him to result in the kind of evil revenge that kids are known for. Grabbing some crayons and a peice of paper, Ed responded to his big brother's meanness by drawing a picture of this big ol' HUGE FAT guy swallowing up the eath with the words "Jimmy Eat World!" at the bottom. He then stuck it to the door that he was locked out of. Of course, all the guys thought his was hillarious, thus naming their band Jimmy Eat World.

Maybe the two kids on the cover of their self-titled full-length are the brothers, but neither of them are really that fat...

I think I read somewhere that Allister got their name from an old nickelodeon show. It might have been "You cant do that on TV" I thought that was cool.

I think The Starting Line and Finch both just picked the names randomly.

I know a possibilitie of where 'Taking Back Sunday' came from, it is not confirmed, however ...

One day, Eddie Rayes (guitar) and John Nolan (ex-member, guitar/vocals) were caught shoplifting in a mall on Sunday, and made a pact called 'Taking Back Sunday', which meant they would never steal again.

It's a possibility.

Anyways, cool story. Never knew that about Jimmy Eat World and their name.

Saves the Day got their name from their former bass player I believe... may have been the guitar player but anyway, its from a song by Farside called "Hero". They were in the studio recording their self titled Demo, and the one guy didn't show up (the name of the band at the time was Sefler which means a person who fantasizes about having sex with Santa) and so they had their friend join the band but he said they had to change the name, hence Saves the Day, because he always wanted to name a band that. Also, their albumn Through Being Cool is named after a Devo Song. I fucking love Devo, but thats beside the point...there's the Saves the Day story! :D

good charlotte actually got their name from the book "charlottes web". they sat up late into the night searching through the book trying to put words before the world "charlotte" to make it sound good. they tried countless adjectives, verbs and nouns..until, paul randomly shouted "benji, you were good in bed in last night!". and then, joel jumped and proclaimed "thats it...i've got it!"

The rest of the band then awaited the answer from Joel until he sat back down and said "fuck, i could of swore i was on to something". Then, several months later the band decided to venture once more into such a marvelous childrens novel. Late, on the 23rd of october, 1863..a man came to the door. He said only one word..."good". The band never realized what the man was trying to imply by this, as they were too bothered by his terrible smell and the fact that he wasn't wearing any pants.

On June 11th, 1892, Billy got to his feet and said...."boys, we have our answer...i'm gay" (and he shot his fist into the air). "uhhh, billy? what the fuck are you talking about?" asked Joel. Billy, apparently blushing and now realized he said the wrong thing and said, "Good Charlotte". The rest of the band then sarcastically named themself Popstars and went the next few years with that name. Eventually they finally got tired of Billy getting the name wrong over and over again, so they agreed to switch their name to Good Charlotte. They went on to sell millions of records, marry beautiful men, give birth to 400 lb. children..and eat seafood 5 nights a week.

Wonderful tale wasn't it? Too bad none of it happened.

I think Finch took their name from the character from American Pie.

There is a band around me called F-Timmi (www.f-timmi.com). Things seemed to be going well when one of the members of the band, Timmy, decided to quit on bad terms. The band reorganized and renamed itself....F-Timmi.

MaybeOneDay
01/10/04, 10:08 PM
blink was just something they chose randomly. then they had to change it because of an irish techno band already had the same name, so they just randomly picked a number and added it onto the end of blink. there really is no significance, or story behind their name.

actually there is a somewhat story behind blink 182's name

originally they were just blink but of course there was another band named blink so unless they were willing to change their name that other band was gonna sue the pants off of 'em so they just added 182 to the end of. it has no significant meaning just so they didnt wind up in court

Just because I didn't put the two together doesn't mean I haven't read the book. I'm not saying I'm a huge reader (although I do have a to read a ton for my classes) but I do enjoy reading some times. Right now I'm reading Gods and Generals (since I enjoyed Killer Angels so much, and wanted to see how the author's son was as a writer) I was merely saying what I have been told. I'm really not a huge Finch fan and don't know much by or about them, save about 4 or 5 songs.

I agree, also, that F-Timmi is definitely the better name. Both are pretty creative though....I don't know if there's an actual story behing the Handsome Dan name, though.

The 182 in Blink has no significance, their original name was 'Blink' and then they were trying to think of a number and '182' sounded good. I think.

why would anybody read that book anyway
i've never been one who understood why everyone likes
all that artsy literature, i like fantasy books
like, The Coldfire Trilogy, by C.S. Friedman
now that is a good series, I'm halfway done
with the last book. That other stuff
just doesn't interest me that much, I had to read all those shaka-spear books in high
school, and usually got stuck readin the main character in the plays, but I don't see why
people make such a big deal about it.

A little more on the Less Than Jake thing. I did hear that Jake was one of the member's dog and his parents used to bring home leftovers of lobster/steak/whatever from nice restaurants to give to the dog while he had to stay home and make macaroni and cheese. So he was "less than jake."

green day got their name from a slang term used in the socal/san fran bay area...it's pretty much a day when you're just high...all day...those days were known as green days.

atreyu is a character from the never ending story methinks.

a wilhelm scream is a sound used back in the days of early tv/movies...it was like a screaming noise fading away into the background.

coheed and cambria are the last two surviving characters in their novel.

evergreen terrace may be another simpsons reference...that's the block the simpsons live on.

Finch may be a reference to the character of atticus finch from the book to kill a mockingbird.

my chemical romance was named after a genre of books known as "chemical romances"

save ferris may be a reference to Ferris Beuler's day off...

There's some story about how The Matches got their name. They had to change their name from The Locals because a Chicago band was going to take them to court for it (Yvonne Doll was the lead singers name....hence E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals).

Apparently Jon got in trouble as a kid for setting something on fire and his parents would never let him touch matches again. So they named the band The Matches so that Jon would be able to play with Matches again.

That story's probably not true, but it's kind of funny.
hah, clever bunch of kids...a shame their music is subpar.
