So are there any engineering majors on these boards at all? Whether you have already graduated, still studying, or plan on perusing a engineering education, this can be a good place for some interesting discussion.
I am currently enrolled in the OSU School of Engineering, but I havnt declared a major yet. Im thinking either mechanical or civil. Im actually more interested in civil, I think it would be really cool to build eco-friendly buildings, plus I think I would be better at civil, but theres more money and more jobs in mechanical, so Ill have to see. I cant be all alone here, are there any other engineers out there? Which direction are you guys going in?

I do title-24 for an engineering firm.
What exactly is that? I worked for an engineering firm last summer as an intern. They sent me to a new Children's Hospital that was under construction to do electrical work on the HVAC system (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning). I had to work on these HVAC units called CAV boxes (Constant Air Flow), which were responsible for the air flow in certain areas. I had to find a CAV box for every thermometer in the building and hook my laptop up to it and program it, but they were all installed wrong so before I could program them I had to rewire them. And to make the job harder, all of the CAV boxes on each floor were connected, so if one was wired incorrectly none of them would get power, so the first step was to get power to them all. After a couple weeks it got really easy, but all of the CAV boxes were in the ceiling, some of them were in very awkward and hard to reach places, and some of them were atleast 50 ft off of the ground. It was an awesome job, I learned a ton. I actually planned on staying in the electrical field after I quit working there, but then I took a physics class that was all electrical based and I learned right away that I would have a really tough time with the rest of the electrical classes that I would have to take. So from there I started to work towards mechanical.
Did one semester of aerospace engineering. Considering computer engineering if/when I go back.

Both my parents were chem engineer majors. I get a lot of pressure from both of them to be into subjects like math or physics and sometimes into engineering itself. Thankfully they're not too strict on it. A lot of my friends want to do engineering because it's one of the most career-secure majors around here, next to business and medicine, but none of them are really into the subject. They just want a nice paying job. I honestly think you will do much better if you're doing something because you love it, so if civil suits you better, you should just do that :)

Chemical engineering? Ouch. I absolutely hate chemistry, so Im trying to avoid all the chemical related classes that I can. But I gotta admit, I have mad respect for your parents, I know some chem engineering majors and I knows its not easy at all.
And I know what you are saying about the pressure thing, ever since I decided to take this engineering route my parents have been pressuring my younger sister to concentrate on math and science. Honestly, if they would have tried to talk me into doing engineering I would have become a business major or something, thats just the way that works. The funny thing is, now that I think about it, my parents always did want me to be a successful business man.

Yeah, alot of people say it's one of the hardest out there next to electrical engineering. My dad seems to really enjoy it though. My mom hated it, it took her forever to finish her degree. I don't think I will ever even think about taking engineering, I don't have any interest in it and I was never really good at the subjects that are closely associated to it. To me, it won't be worth the high paying salary that you can get from it. Even though my parents dont mind my career choice, they do sort of pressure me to do well on scientific subjects, which I really suck at. On the other hand, they don't give one little fuck about the subjects I like. I'm taking psychology independently (no teachers/tutors, just me and the books) and they're all like "You should go practice on your math" when I'm studying for it, like it's equivalent to playing video games or watching tv or something. But yeah, I decided life's too short to focus on your shortcomings, so math, physics and chem are always on the bottom of my priority list these days.

i did one year of mechanical engineering. i'm not sure if i will be going back or not. i already have a degree in computer aided drafting, so i might find a job with that when my internship at the local power plant is over.

Neither of my parents went to college and they just kinda sat back and let me decide what I wanted to do with my life. They really didn't say much about what college to go to either, just make sure it isn't too too far from home. Its weird because my cousin had similar interests throughout middle and high school and ended up in civil engineering as well

I was pre-engineering once, but after I took a ton of physics, chemistry, and biology classes I realized I just might want to study medicine instead... ;-)

I'm going to stevens this august to begin studying engineering.
I applied as undecided but I'm pretty sure I'm going to major in electrical engineering.

Haha, how sad that this thread has so few posts...anyway, I'm studying aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech. I started out as mechanical engineering, but the second semester of my sophomore year I somehow decided I wanted to switch to AE, and let me say, I'm really glad I did. Before coming to Tech I couldn't decide between ME and AE...ME seemed to have more job opportunities, while AE interested me more. I let myself kind of be persuaded by a a family friend to go ME, and I realize now that I should've gone AE instead. It's all good now, I just need to get some job experience some time...
Oh yeah, and both of my parents were chemical engineers too, but I think we've all known/thought since I was a kid that I would be an engineer too, so I don't really feel like there has been much pressure about it.

Both of my parents are chemical engineers, and at age 12 my younger brother built his own Tesla coil, so I had no hope on being saved from pressure into engineering. I, on the other hand, am a Microbiology major already planning on entering UAB at the master's level for an MPH in Epidemiology and International Health.
On the generalized note: most of my friends are Civil Engineers in school, a lot of people seem to enjoy going that route. I wouldn't worry too much on the job scale, even with just a Bachelor's there seems to be plenty floating around. Right now my roommate for next year is working for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Atlanta as an intern, and has already found a few jobs she'll be interested in applying for once she's graduated. Out of all of my engineering friends, the civil engineers seem to also have the most opportunity for co-op jobs.

I'm a mechanical engineering major and in the 3 years I have been in school I've had at least 15 friends drop out or change out of the engineering field. I do go to school at the top of Michigan's Upper Peninsula though, fat bitches and snow is the way of life outside of spending time in the nerdery a.k.a. lab. Make damn good money though.

i'm actually majoring in computer science BUT my friend's dad is an engineer and its pretty amazing.
he built us all kinds of neat gadgets back in the day; potato gun, hover crafts..
i believe he is a civil engineer

i'm a high school junior that is looking into mechanical or civil engineering and my sister is a sophmore attending UC for chemical engineering.
my dad is an architect and some of the stuff he does is pretty neat so i'm leaning towards civil right now but i still have plenty of time to make up my mind.
my dad is a mechanical engineer designer, and my brother graduated in mechanical engineering but he goes to business school now & does nothing with his degree...ha

Graduated from NC State University (Go Pack!) in Mechanical Engineering about a year and a half ago. I do HVAC and mechanical systems design for Fluor Corp. and I really enjoy it. Sucks that I had to give up my band being full time to take the job. But being an enginerd with a fairly serious band on the weekends is not that bad.
I am a Computer Engineer for the Govt.Very little work for good money, but it is very boring.
