View Full Version : Music Forum Mixtape - June 2008
Alright folks, here we are. This is the fifth installment (I believe) of our glorious Music Forum Mixtapes.
We have 12 participants willing to contribute with mixes, 4 of which I have already.
The order for posting is as follows:
funkel (http://sharebee.com/06e24dbb)
hailthewarrior (http://www.mediafire.com/?9vnxcnt25lx)
Nevuk (http://www.mediafire.com/?ttywdtmdweb)
Getup and Dance
allhourcymbals
Jumpoff
versus_god
CharlieKilo
micahistheballs
AP_Punk
SickOfStars
alice+interiors
Each mixtape will be posted every other day, allowing people to download, listen, and comment on the current mix.
As far as format, please keep the mixes close to 30 minutes in total time.
Make a mix, then zip or rar it, then upload that zip or rar to a filesharing website like http://www.sharebee.com (http://www.sharebee.com/)
Make your mix. I make an MP3 copy of all the tracks in the mix, and then I change album to "Music Forum Mixtape June 2008 - [insert username here]". Change the tracklisting if you see fit. If you use iTunes, make sure the "part of a compilation" box is checked.
Then zip the folder and upload it.
That pretty much covers things. I think if we stick to a song-by-song anaylsis, with a #/5 rating per song, commenting on what worked/didn't work, and an overall rating for the mix, that'll work great.
Remember, anyone is welcome to review.
Review individual songs in a manner like this:
0/5 : No redeeming quality whatsoever, I couldn't make it through the whole thing even once.
1/5 : Uniformly terrible, I wouldn't want to listen to it again, but I was able to make it through it.
2/5 : Mediocre, or highly flawed. Typically something with some good spots or good ideas but terrible execution
3/5 : Listenable. I enjoy it but see no remarkable qualities. I also forget it immediately after listening.
4/5 : I might listen to this later.
5/5 : I could see myself liking more from this artist.
And here we go!
EDIT:
All mixes must be PMed to me, as I will add them into the thread when the time comes. DO NOT post your mix early.

If Kiribie doesn't, you can. I want to keep it to 10 total participants.

Not really. It does have a really nice flow, I think.

Just DL'ed Funkel's mix. I saw Algernon Cadwallader and knew that at the least, I wouldn't hate the mix.
ill edit my review in later, but this is a great idea. should help me discover a good number of bands.
Downloading now. I will say my mix is not going to be what people are expecting of me. I refuse to be pigeonholed.

Haha it's all good. I don't remember what you said about my first mix back when we did that one but I think you did like at least one thing on there.
Ok, review of Funkel's.
Guideline as to what my scores mean :
0/5 : No redeeming quality whatsoever, I couldn't make it through the whole thing even once.
1/5 : Uniformly terrible, I wouldn't want to listen to it again, but I was able to make it through it.
2/5 : Mediocre, or highly flawed. Typically something with some good spots or good ideas but terrible execution
3/5 : Listenable. I enjoy it but see no remarkable qualities. I also forget it immediately after listening.
4/5 : I might listen to this later.
5/5 : I could see myself liking more from this artist.
Scraps of Tape : 3.5/5
Delightfully heavy opening. I can tell its going to be a bit on the lengthy side. Vocal opening is annoying. They'd be better off sticking to their heavy side, as the quiet parts are just repetive and unnecessary. I do really like the heavy sections though.
Motivational Song: 3/5
Is this from some kind of cadwaller? I've never actually cared much for this kind of emo, although its one of the decent bands. OH AND WTF BELLS WHAT ARE BELLS DOING I N MY EMO ARGGHHHWAHT IS THAT A TYPEQWRITER ?
Taqueria Girl : 2/5
The effect on his voice is annoying. Fortunately this song is short. Plus what is this, 2 chord powerpunk? The fills with the trumpets are fun though. If they got a better singer, dropped vocal effects, and recorded the sound of them slowly slaughtering the original guitarists I could get into this.
Loose Lips Sink Ships - 5/5
This is neat. A tad repetitive, but in a good way. Makes me think of fairies fucking in a woodland festival.
McBrides : 4/5
VIOLINS! Those things are awesome. See my comment about LLSS. Only thing better than violins is random indian flute music. The other instruments intrude upon my aural love affair. BACK OFF PIANO! Does get a tad lengthy, though. They also aren't the best of violenists.
Twilight Sad :0/0 = IMPOSSIBLE
Ugh. I can't stand anything about this. Even the turn can't make up for the terrible intro.
Wreckage : 1/5
Sounds like tuff guy rah rah hXc I'm SO HARD I PUT X'S ON MY HANDS IN SHARPIE YEAH! AND SCREAM KIND OF LOW BUT I CANT PIGSQUEAL I WISH I COULD PIGSQUEAL. THAT"D BE AWESOME. JUN JUN JUN DUG JUN JUN JUN DUG JUN JUN JUN DUG REARAR AREAR A REARA.
Too much bane influence, one of my least favorite kinds of hardcore.
Verse: 3.5/5
This starts out good. Kind of... slow, nothing really happens. I can't remember it after hearing it.
Ruiner: 2/5
Kind of generic opening. Also, this guy makes Hour of the Star look unobsessive by comparison. The ending is just annoying.

FUNKEL'S MIX
Scraps of Tape - Death As It Should Be: Sweet riffs, sweet overdistortion of the guitar. I do feel like it needed vocals. Usually I'm not a stickler about this but the structure was pretty flat with nothing to go over it. 2.5/5
Algernon Cadwallader - Motivational Song: I've recently been loving this band pretty hard. You are the win for putting this on here 4/5
Fishboy - Taqueria Girl: This was pretty fun. Liked the horns a lot. Dunno if I'd listen to it all the time. 3/5
Loose Lips Sink Ships - My Ego, My Little Dwarf: Sweet instrumental song. Again, sounds like the kinda music that you would have vocals over, but it's so good regardless. 4/5
Leahy - McBrides: I like Irish/Celtic music. Nice surprise on the otherwise indie-heavy tracklisting. I don't check out new artists in this type of music everyday, so I dunno if I'm going to go do research on this, but it was pretty enjoyable. 3.5/5
The Twilight Sad - Cold Days from the Birdhouse: Pretty epic. Didn't even realize it was 6 minutes long. I also really liked the obvious accent in the guy's voice. 3/5
Grave Maker - Wreckage: pretty decent straight-up hardcore. not usually my thing. I might check out this band's other stuff just because this does seem like something that could grow on me. 2/5
Verse - Scream: see above. 2/5
Ruiner - Kiss That Motherfucker Goodnight: more energy than either of these two had. I will probably look into this band, although MHT has said that they are strictly for pussies. 2.7/5
Overall: Pretty good stuff. The instrumental indie tracks were pretty nice, as was the irish/celtic song and the inclusion of algernon cadwallader. I probably won't listen to fishboy much, but it was cool, same with the twilight sad (pretty epic.) I really could've done without you breaking out your cr00sh nikes and new era 59fifty hats for the last three tracks, but at least they were pretty solid tracks.

Funkel's mix:
Scraps of Tape - Stuff like this (post-rock?) tends to bore the fuck out of me. This wasn't much of an exception but that being said it was kind of cool. 2/5
Algernon Cadwallader - I liked this. Probably not something I'll be looking into but enjoyable. 3.5/5
Fishboy - Eh, it's okay. Kind of annoying. Fun though. Probably won't be listening to any more of this band though. 2/5
Loose Lips Sink Ships - Bored the hell out of me. sorry. 1/5
Leah - Liked it alot. Everyone should know by now that I'm a huge fan of Celtic/Irish music of any kind. I'll probably explore this band a little more sometime. 4/5
The Twilight Sad - Fairly enjoyable, but not my thing. Might listen to this from time to time. 3.5/5
Gravemaker - Liked this quite a bit. Reminds me of Comeback Kid a bit, which is definitely a plus in my book. I'll probably check them out later. 4/5
Verse - See: Gravemaker. 3/5
Ruiner - Wasn't feeling this one much at all. As far as hardcore goes, the previous two bands were much more enjoyable. 2/5
overall I liked it. interesting mix of music, standouts for me were Leahy, Verse and Grave Maker.

Review of Funkel's Mix
"Death As It Should Be" - Scraps of Tape: Long. Not bad, but long. 2/5
"Motivational Song - Algernon Cadwallader: At first I liked it, but then I didn't. 2.5/5
"Taqeria Girl" - Fishboy: Liked it for the most part. 3/5
"My Ego, My Little Dwarf" - Loose Lips Sink Ships: Boring and didn't keep my attention. 1/5
"McBrides" - Leahy: I'm a sucker for the fiddle in any piece. Nice pick. 5/5
"Cold Days From The Birdhouse" - The Twilight Sad: Like the accent. Kind of wish it wasn't so long, but it works for this song.
"Wreckage" - Grave Maker: Not my thing, but not bad. 2/5
"Scream" - Verse: Pretty much the same as the last track. Bit of a difference, but the amount that I liked it ends up the same. 2/5
"Kiss That Motherfucker Goodnight" - Ruiner: For some reason I liked this better then the last two tracks. Still not my thing but it was slightly more enjoy able. 2.5/5

Funkel's Mix:
1. Scraps Of Tape - Liked the intro, but was a little too long for me and not exactly my cup of tea either. Had some nice (really can't think of a better word but nice here) guitar parts throughout the song though. 2/5
2. Algernon Cadwallader - Loved this song from the first 10 seconds. I can see why some people would not like his voice, but I enjoyed it. 3.5/5
3. Fishboy - Love Fishboy! I think it was Susanna that made a thread about them a while ago and I checked them out. It's a cute song and made me happy. 5/5
4. Loose Lips Sink Ships - Started out slow and I have a pretty low attention span so I turned it off after about a minute. 1/5
5. Leahy - Got my attention pretty fast. This is definitely a band I'm going to check out further, I really enjoyed the violins and piano. 5/5
6. The Twilight Sad - Didn't enjoy the song really, but his voice is wonderful. 4/5
7. Grave Maker - I'm just gonna go ahead and say no thank you on this one. 1/5
8. Verse - Same as 7. 1/5
9. Ruiner - Good energy in this song, not normally my type of music but it wasn't that bad. 2.5/5
Until The Bombs
05/30/08, 03:15 PM
Death As It Should Be - Didn't really stick out to me, but I never wanted to skip it (which is a plus). Good background music. 2/5
Motivational Song - One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands at the moment. It's just a great bouncy, fun summer song, although I still have no idea what the singer is singing. 5/5
Taqueria Girl - Like the first song, it didn't stick out to me, but again, at least I didn't skip it. 2/5
My Ego, My Little Dwarf - Bored me. 1/5
McBrides - Ahhh....not for me. 0/5
Cold Days From The Birdhouse - Really like the guys voice, but the song never lived up to it's potential, ran too long. 2.5/5
Wreckage - I went through a six month period where all I listened to is hardcore. Now all these bands sound exactly the same. At this point I can only appreciate those who do it best, they don't. This song follows the hardcore blueprint step by hardcore dancing step. 1/5
Scream - See last song. This one was a little better. 1.5/5
Kiss That Motherfucker Good Night - Left me indifferent. 2.5/5

I am too lazy for mixtapes, but The Twilight Sad were so overlooked last year, I absolutely loved that album.
Wow, had no idea anyone beyond the great white north was aware of their existence.
My family has been into them for years. Irish/Celtic music ftw.
I'm kind of regretting 3 straight hardcore tracks in my mix, but it was only supposed to be two...I thought I got rid of Ruiner...

Ha really?
Well the reason for getting rid of it was length, as the mix is like 36 minutes instead of 31.

If you can take out one song to bring it closer to 30, do it. If you absolutely need it, then fine.

If you can take out one song to bring it closer to 30, do it. If you absolutely need it, then fine.

These were always good ideas. I'll check these out when I'm at school.
Review of Garrett's:
1. What Made Milwaukee Famous - Sultan (3.75/5)
Nice little indie number. Very catchy. I can definitely see myself getting into this band. And with a name that mentions Milwaukee, I have to like it based on some intrinsic value, right?
2. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Biomusicology (4/5)
Really nice. Love the vocals, the instrumentals were really chill. Craig’s been reccing these guys for over a year, and now that I’ve finally heard them, it’s probably time to actually check ‘em out.
3. Desoto Jones - Don't Fail Me (2.5/5)
Catchy song, but not much substance otherwise. After listening, I don’t even remember it. Strong pop-punk vocals with a slight edge to it is the only true strong point of the song.
4. The Photographic - Secure (3/5)
Interesting. I honestly wasn’t expecting a post-rock song from you, but I shouldn’t be surprised. This isn’t bad but it’s kind of short and although nice doesn’t grab my full attention or ever have a massive crescendo or some of the other key factors that I enjoy about post-rock. Maybe this was more math-rock… I don’t know. Good but not great.
5. Sleeping At Last - A Skeleton of Something More (2/5)
Hated it at first, as it seemed kind of a like an overproduced stereotypical obligatory ballad by a pop-punk band. But the vocals are pretty good. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either. It’s okay.
6. Umbrellas - The City Lights (2/5)
I’ve never been able to get into this guy’s voice. It always seems kind of whiny. Music wasn’t all that complex, but the piano was a nice touch, which I know is a key to Umbrellas. Meh, just didn’t do much for me.
7. Paper Rival - Alabama (4/5)
Loved the vocal delivery and the simplicity of the instrumentation. Definitely want to know more from this artist.
8. mewithoutYou - In A Market Dimly Lit (5/5)
My favorite song from one of my favorite bands. Nice.
Overall: Not bad, had a strong beginning and end, but lackluster middle. Couple new artists to check out. Sweet.

That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. I've heard some good things about the show, been meaning to check it out.
I actually watch BBC America fairly often, although I have to watch it at a friend's because I don't have cable. Generally we watch Top Gear, Chef Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, along with the UK news sometimes. I'm a big fan of Skins. My avatar is a screen cap from the Season 1 finale. I've seen season 1 of Shameless as well, but need to catch up on the rest.

Nah. I had a mix in most, if not all, of the original threads. Every time the threads either became too disorganized, people started to lose interest, or the person running the show did a poor job updating it. So I figured I'd just check everyone else's mixes out and do my best to review each.

Scrap Tape - Death as it Should Be
Was bored. 1/5
Algernon Caldwallader - Motivational Song
These guys are another great Lancaster band. Love their CD.. I need to buy it when I get the chance to see htem live. 4/5
Fishboy - Taqueria Girl
Gives me a Dr. Dog type of feel, though not as good. Decent song. 3/5
Loose Links Sink Ships - My Ego, Little Dwarf
Same as scraps. Maybe I'm just not a big fan of instrumentals on mixtapes. 1/5
Leahy - McBride
Surprisingly, I enjoyed this song though it was instrumental. It gave me almost the Rodrigo Y Gabriela feel, though Irish. 3/5
The Twilight Sad - Cold Days from the Birdhouse
I enjoyed the song. Had the same Irish feel as Leahy, but this time that was because of the vocals.. Will be listening to them more. 3.5/5
Gravemaker - Wreckage
Such stereotypical hardcore. 2/5
Verse - Scream
I like these guys. Already listen them. They are decent. 3/5
Ruiner - Kiss that Motherfucker Good Night
Terrible band. 1/5

Garrett's Mix:
1. Paper Rival - Really enjoyed this. It was really soothing, and I loved his voice. 3.5/5
2. What Made Milwaukee Famous - Loved the intro and the energy in this song. 4/5
3. Desoto Jones - Didn't really do anything for me, but I didn't completely hate it. 2.5/5
4. MeWithoutYou - Do not like them. 1/5
5. Ted Leo - Ohhhhhh, yes. I almost made biomusicology my AP username when I changed it a while ago! I am completely in love with this man and this song, 5/5
6. Umbrellas - LOVE the Umbrellas. I have three band posters in my room and they are one of them. Great song choice, I think I might have put this on my mix last time that never got posted. 5/5
7. The Photogenic - I don't have anything to say about this one except no thanks. 1/5
8. Sleeping At Last - I think I've heard this band mentioned before but never listened, and I'm glad I know now that I don't like them (or at least the song). Great voice though. 2/5

Review of Garrett's Mix:
"Sultan" - What Made Milwaukee Famous: Catchy. Not what I wouldn't normally seek out, but it's a nice listen. 4/5
"Biomusicolgy" - Ted Leo and The Pharamcists: I love Ted Leo. This isn't any different. Good vocals, nice instrumentals, fairly interesting guitar. 5/5
"Don't Fail Me" - Desoto Jones: Eh.......could have done without it. Kind of blah to me. 1/5
"Secure" - The Photographic: I don't know if it's me, but that was boring. 2/5
"A Skeleton Of Something More" - Sleeping At Last: Not a fan of the vocals. 1/5
"The City Lights" - Umbrellas: Again, I don't like the vocals. Somewhat boring. The piano saved it. 3/5
"Alabama" - Paper Rival: Here's a song where I like the vocals. Nice and simple. For some reason the band name sounds really familar. 4/5
"In A Market Dimly Lit" - Mewithoutyou: Some of it was pretty good, other parts of it just didn't hit home with me. 3/5

Craig always had the best mixes. Hands-down.
Yeah, Craig's mixes were awesome, even if they weren't my cup of tea. Tea is good. As far as people liking the mixes, the point of them isn't even necessarily to find things that you like, its to get exposed to new music you would otherwise never hear. Which is why mixes from someone like Craig tend to be good. I'm likely the person who will dislike the most music in any given mix, but don't let that discourage anyone from putting something in there that they think others should hear. Me not liking something is frequently a positive sign for other people. I'll review Garrett's tommorrow, and I can re rar it and up it again, if the mac people still need it.

Download the original copy then go to this site http://www.zamzar.com/ and convert it to a zip or whatever format works on your computer.
I figured out what was wrong with it for an XP computer, it simply doesn't have the .zip extension. Just rename it and add that to its name.
Review of Garrett's mix :
Paper Rival - 4/5
Nice drumming. Weird voice. Other instruments feel superfluous. I like it, but don't know if I would always.
Ted Leo - 3.5/5
Opening flute thing annoyed me. You like weird voices. Still, I guess I'm in a good mood today.
Umbrellas - 1/5
Never have liked pianos. I don't like low breathy singing by females, makes me think someone is trying to seduce me which makes me think of a lack of seduction and at the same time like the person is attempting to control me through their voice, but what after all is music but an exertion of control upon the emotions of others, however I can usually tolerate it because they themselves are unaware of the effect they are reaching for and acheiving but with one so common as low breathyness the intended effect is perfectly understood and meant to be an effort to resist and so I must resist it as I do.
(Garrett will understand this)
Desoto Jones - 1.5/5
Could tell I wouldn't' really like this that much, but it was better than Umbrellas. My real objection is I swear the bassist is only playing root notes.
Sultan - 2/5
Makes me think of musicals. That's a bad idea.
The photographic
I don't remember this. At all. There were no vocals, I think there was a guitar somewhere.
Sleeping at Last - 2/5
You're very into this style of music. Slow, quiet intros, then noisy but slow introductions of more music. Its very climactic. The psychoanalytic feminist theorist in me wants to comment upon the maleness of this, and the similarity of it to coitus for males. (Most popular stories are like this as well). Is it a bad thing I just commented on your sexuality based on the music you listen to? Oh, and the song's alright.
mwy - 4/5
Music is good, the sung vocals annoy me. But that's because I hate country accents.

Hell, I took the artist and track names out of the files in my mix. But usually it doesn't matter if they do or don't as everyone posts the titles in the reviews of the mixes. I don't think its against the rules or anything to post what is in the mix, although it takes away a bit of the surprise if the mix hasn't even been posted et.

And, my personal opinion is to leave the artist and track names on the files because I'm anal retentive and it bugs me on iTunes. Plus, if you have an awesome track by an awesome band, I'd like to know who :)

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, I thought they actually wanted the artist and track names taken off or I wouldn't have done so. I'll list what they are when the mix goes up anyways. You've heard at least a few of them, but there are one or two that would be unlikely.

Ok, it needs to be renamed and have a .rar added to the end if its not opening, no clue why mediafire took it off. But after that, the track listing
1. Coaltar of the Deepers - The Breaststroke (Edo Techno Mix)
2. Smart Went Crazy - Con Art
3. Drive Like Jehu - Atom Jack (This is titled Track 3)
4. The Civil Hands - Bloody Hell
5. Halo Perfecto - Do French
6. Reach Out - Shit Me a Mountain of Lies
7. I actually took this one out to get under the 30 minutes, didn't want to be 18 seconds over. It was Reversal of Man - The Setup, if anyone is really that intereested.
8. I Hate Myself - Conversations with Dr Seusscide
9. Pygmylush - Boys of Swift Creek Resevoir

Nevuk's mix:
Coaltar of the Deepers - Pretty cool I guess, but not really that interesting. 2/5
Smart Went Crazy - Didn't enjoy this at all. 0/5
Drive Like Jehu - I enjoyed this. I always hear about how great this band is but I've never checked them out. So I may do so now, finally. 3/5
The Civil Hands - Didn't enjoy this. 0/5
Halo Perfecto - I got really, really bored. 0/5
Reach Out - Kind of interesting but not really enjoyable. 1/5
I Hate Myself - I enjoyed it overall. 3.5/5
Pygmylush - The acoustic track was a nice breath of fresh air. The vocal style was nice too. I enjoyed this song the most off of the mix. 5/5
I'm hoping that the track order didn't get screwed up here when I opened the mix haha. I think it might have. But I dunno.

hailthewarrior (Garret's) mix:
Paper Rival - The drums were kind of annoying but overall it's an enjoyable track that clicked right around the 2:18 mark. Don't think I'll be checking them out tough. 3/5
Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Great choice. I've only recently gotten into Ted Leo but he's great. 5/5
Umbrellas - I enjoyed this quite a bit. The big production is a nice touch, and the low, breath vocals are pretty relaxing, which I liked. Might check out more of this band sometime. 4/5
Desoto Jones - Nothing special, but I liked it. Doubt I'll check out this band any further but I might. And though it's only 3:27, it felt like it went on a little too long. 2.8/5
What Made Milwaukee Famous - Kind of cool, and a pretty interesting song. I could see myself enjoying more from this artist, but only on occasion. 3/5
the Photographic - Meh, not a big fan of post-rock, or whatever this is. It's enjoyable, and I like the guitar work and the whole atmosphere it produces, but I like vocals, haha. It was good though. But not something I'd listen to often. I don't think I would, anyway. 3.5/5
Sleeping At Last - I liked it for the most part. Not really my thing though. 2.5/5
mewithoutYou - Enjoyable. I liked the instrumentation quite a bit, and the vocals have some character, which I like. I have an album by this band but I haven't really given it a listen yet. I might now. 3/5

Sounds good, thanks for the tip.
It's not that I dislike screaming, because I listen to several bands that do scream/shout; it's just that none of the tracks there with screaming aside from Drive Like Jehu did anything for me.
But yeah, I'll check them out.

It's not that I dislike screaming, because I listen to several bands that do scream/shout; it's just that none of the tracks there with screaming aside from Drive Like Jehu did anything for me.
But yeah, I'll check them out.
Oh, I didn't actually think that was why you didn't like it, it's just that that is actually the way to describe pygmylush. About half their songs are really heavy, and the others are acoustic-light.

yeah. No use in these threads it seems. A better thread would be one where the threadstarter takes all mixes, posts them in the first post, and the rest of the thread is dedicated to discussing said mixes (leaving first post only to be editted when peolpe feel like making a new mix and deleting their previous.)

First off, I just don't think there's enough interest. If people aren't reviewing, it dies. Second, the mixes need to be shorter, like four or five songs or the equivalent of 15-20 mins. Any longer, if people don't care for the type of music in the mix, they won't listen to it all and review it. Lastly, the threadstarter just needs to be on top of things, and the last two or three people to do these just haven't done a very good job.

It's because I became really busy with work and stuff. I'll post the next mix right now.

I think we should just start a new thread altogether and start where we left off. If you've been busy or think you'll be too busy to keep this going, maybe get someone else who's on regularly to do it?
I'm sure the link are probably all expired by now so I guess the people who were signed up that still want to do this can either re-up their mixes or just make new ones altogether.

Yeah, I might like to take control here. I think I have a good idea of how to handle everything. Receive the mixes via PM, post them once every other day (or every two days, maybe), etc. So yeah, I'm pretty sure I could do it.

Do it. And cut down the mix lengths. I know everyone wants to make these epic mixes expecting everyone to love all 45 mins, but it never happens. I see this as more of a great outlet to discover new music than to actually listen to a mix. Maybe I'm alone on that though.

I thought the current time limit was pretty reasonable but I think cutting it down may be a pretty good idea. I'll think a little bit on it, and I'd appreciate it more people chimed in as to what they think a fair, reasonable time (or song) limit would be. I think a time limit would be more practical than a song limit, because songs lengths will vary. If someone's making a more punk-oriented mix, the songs will most likely be shorter whereas someone making an indie mix or what have you, the songs might average at 3 to 4 minutes each. You know?

Trying to get an idea on what people actually would want out of this sounds like a good idea. The main reason why I think the time limit needs to shrink to like 15-20 mins, as ridiculous as it sounds, is that I think it would make it more likely for people to check out mixes and give back feedback. Either way it is essential like you said, regardless of how long the limit is.

Yeah, I agree. 15-20 minutes sounds pretty reasonable, and I wouldn't have a problem with it but I'd still appreciate a little more feedback from the people who'll be taking part.

Pairing up users was suggested the first time we ever did this, I believe, and it was elaborated upon as to why that wasn't ever chosen as the method by which this thing is done. But it could work.
And I could be wrong but I think the reason the last ones have failed were due to inactivity or attention from the thread starter/whoever was moderating.

Hmm, I would say it is more due to people just not wanting to review mixes and only up them. I've reviewed almost every mix in every of these threads. I'm fine with people not wanting to review mixes, but I get more annoyed when all they do is post them. Look at this thread, only three people were reviewing on average, and more people posted mixes than that.

I think it could be both things, really. I agree though, it is annoying. So while a new format might solve the problem, I still don't think it'd change people's willingness to review or not to review the mixes posted.
Anyway guys I think I'm going to get some sleep so I'll check back in on this tomorrow and we can try and go from there.

I reviewed every mix I downloaded (which was only two or three before I left for a bit) and I agree that not many reviewed any mixes. Maybe we could get the thread to be moderated so that only the thread head (which I guess is Chris since the threadstarter abandoned us) can post links to mixes and whatnot. Doubt that would work though. Just an idea.
