The Method To My Medium – The Sincerities EP
Release Date: April 8, 2008
Record Label: Thriving/EastWest
When it comes to the scene, the state of Indiana doesn’t produce many bands that catch your ear. We’re not like Chicago or Long Island, we don’t have a scene hotbed. Other than Asteria, Gwen Stacy, and Murder By Death (to name a few), we’re known more for being a boring state you drive though to get your ultimate destination.
This would explain why I was so giddy to receive Bloomington, IN own The Method To My Medium’s debut EP, The Sincerities EP. This EP is full of hooks yet not so sugary that it’ll ruin your teeth and melodies that are sure to please your ears.
What you’ll notice firsthand is that Sincerities is all about attitude and confidence, starting with “The New Chapter.” Aggressive and buoyed by keyboardist Jordan Wilkerson, the track ends with a sweet bridge and great harmony from vocalist/guitarist Jonny Katt. “Lessons In Breathing” is a poppier track, but still contains the same amount of pep and speed throughout, while “Finding Redemption” begins with an electronic beat leading into booms of Andrew Steininger’s drums. “Move Real Slow” is one of the more fun songs you’ll hear all year, with driving riffs from Katt and David Gize and a rhythm section anchored by bassist Nick Lamping and Steininger that’ll get your feet moving.
Even though this is an EP, it runs over 38 minutes long at 10 tracks, thanks to the addition of early demos of “The New Chapter,” “Melodies And Metaphors,” and “Move Real Slow,” which is a nice bonus and gives a good insight on what changes they made to the songs.
It makes me smile anytime I hear a band from Indiana making quality music and making a name for their selves. Fans of pop-rock music will eat this up, especially if you dig Motion City Soundtrack. Basically, it’s substantial quality pop that doesn’t beat you over the head with electronic overdubs and autotune. The Sincerities EP may have been released in the spring, but The Method To My Medium plan for it to heat up your summer instead.
