Seeing some Chappelle's show the other day with Mos Def free-styling in a car inspired this. So good.

Dude, that freestyle wasn't a freestyle. It was Close Edge, but I know what you are talking about. So good. I love that Dave is just vibing in the passenger seat.

He was freestyling, though. That was just amazing the way he could do that. Sounded just as good as the album version.

I guess I see your point. I wasn't trying to correct you. I just see freestyling as creating your flow off of the top of your head, and those were verses he had written prior.

Genuma
06/02/08, 07:45 PM
Yeah, I guess that's more real freestyling. I just meant he was doing it completely bare, no word for that really.

I wouldn't say he's underrated.. most rap fans highly rate BoBS. Though, I would say New Danger is underrated.

BoBS is classic. New Danger took a while to grow on me, but great album. Tru3 Magic was kind of a let down though. Hope his next album is back to being like BoBS.

I mos definitely saw him for free last year at the park right in front of my house. There weren't a lot of people there, either. It was insanely out of nowhere and amazingly awesome. Of course, it was through word of mouth in our neighborhood, and he only performed like 5 songs. Still a great time, great memories.

Oh, and I didn't even notice your username till you quoted me. Also in good taste.

I would probably go into a coma if Black Star and Third Eye Blind played a show together. It's a stretch, but my friend saw 3EB and Lupe Fiasco together one time.

I'm just getting into him. Actually, just getting into the whole hip-hop/rap genre. I've always wanted to explore it, but I've only ever been interested in Kanye West, Jay Z, P.O.S and now Mos Def. Anything else I can check out? I tend to enjoy the hip-hop artists a lot more than actual rappers.

you might like Immortal Technique, check out more Doomtree stuff if you like P.O.S, Busdriver, The Cool Kids, Danger Doom/DOOM and all related projects (King Geedorah, Monsta Island Czars), Wale, Talib Kweli and Lupe Fiasco would all be good for hip-hop artists. if you want just straight out rappers/rap groups I could recommend a few of those too.

Man, thank you so much. I like Lupe too, and I've heard Talib Kweli as well. Both solid. Looks like I've got a new genre to explore and discuss.

no problem. it can be pretty daunting sometimes with a lot of these artists having such expansive libraries, but if you check them out release by release you'll find some great new artists.

So whats the general consensus on a starting point with Mos Def? From the beginning? Or is there a specific album?
I've been spinning his work for a good month now, I'm new to the genre so I figured I'd make sure I actually enjoy it before diving in.

I don't agree with the level of hype he gets by the blogosphere/indie kids pretending to like/know anything about Hip Hop (note: which isn't a jab at any of you here).

Black Star was great and Black on Both Sides had some good cuts. Conversely, The New Danger and True Magic were rather poor efforts with uninspired samples and seemingly castrated social commentary. The Ecstatic doesn't have much staying power for me.

I know you didn't ask me, but Cannibal Ox's solo effort The Cold Vein is the place to start. Get it immediately. Here's some of the best from the last ten years:

Army of Pharaohs -- Torture Papers
Blue Sky Black Death -- A Heap of Broken Images
Cage -- Movies for the Blind
Cannibal Ox -- The Cold Vein
The Cool Kids -- The Bake Sale
Doomtree -- Doomtree
Haiku D'etat -- Coup de Theatre
Handsome Boy Modeling School -- White People
Ivan Ives -- Iconoclast
The Knux -- Remind Me in Three Days
Little Brother -- The Listening
MURS -- Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition
Nujabes -- Metaphorical Music
Pharoae Moench -- Desire
Speech Debelle -- Speech Therapy
The Weathermen -- The Conspiracy

That's merely a sample. There's so much good stuff in the last decade. I'm still catching up.

Mos Def is funny but a bit ignorant when it comes to certain things. Maybe he was just BSing this whole disscussion, I don't know, but this video was certainly interesting haha:

Save for the ridiculous 9/11 conspiracy angle, he's correct in everything mentioned.

Black Star and Black on Both Sides are two of my favorite hip-hop albums, so that puts a little bias on me. True Magic, I agree was garbage for the most part. I enjoyed The Ecstatic and The New Danger, thought to a lesser degree than Black Star and Black on Both Sides. Plus, he was Gangstalicious so fuck yeah.

CellarGhosts

I really like the majority of The New Danger. There's a few tracks I skip over/don't care for though.

Genuma

I like the variety that he manages to include, most hip-hop artists fall flat on their face when they try that (cue lil wayne) but he did it pretty well.

CellarGhosts

I'd agree to that. He could've done better, but it was a pretty solid effort overall.

Whoops, my apologies, I definitely should have watched the entire video before I posted it, but I was in a huge rush. I'm embarassed. Yeah, I haven't watched that video in a while, funny how flawed memory can be. I just watched the entire thing over again and besides the conspiracy theories I was pretty much in agreement with what Mos Def and Cornel West were saying.

Listening to this year's Grammy nominees I stumbled on to "Casa Bey." That song is pretty awesome.
