Noam Chomsky

Chomsky seems to be a very popular, almost iconic, political writer and supporter of leftist politics( I think Libertarian Socialist is the term usually used to describe his ideals). However, I've heard from some people that are actually into these political philosophies that Chomsky doesn't really understand these philosophies and is basically just a popular hack. I was wondering if some of the people on this board who are familiar and knowledgeable with the political philosophies of Marxism, Socialism, and Anarchism could comment on Chomsky and what they think of his writings.

i consider chomsky to be a marxist, as he thinks that a progressive income tax system, social security, etc. will lead to a stateless society. so, i don't consider him to be an anarchist at all.

Well, he is a libertarian socialist. From interviews I've read with him, he isn't a Marxist and doesn't particularly care for it as an ideology, because he thinks it is authoritarian. Anarchism, by the way, isn't opposed to government entirely, rather, unjust rule and one might argue that social security would be a manifestation of just rule.
