Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
Release Date: June 10, 2008
Record Label: Cash Money/Universal/Young Money

Dwayne Carter, Jr., also known as Lil Wayne, is one of the most controversial rappers in the mainstream today. Already claiming to be the “greatest rapper alive” and topping many hip-hop critics lists as the hottest rapper in the game right now, his highly anticipated third chapter of Tha Carter is upon us. Anticipation grew more and more as the record kept getting pushed back and delayed, it makes one wonder if the anticipation and hype will be too much for the New Orleans rapper to overcome.

It’s not like Wayne was just lying around doing nothing. A workaholic, he released numerous mixtapes between Tha Carter II and Tha Carter III and appeared on many, many tracks throughout the hip hop universe. But now it’s time to deliver with Tha Carter III, and the verdict is mixed.

Accompanied with an all-star lineup of producers, Tha Carter III is at its best when the beats hit hard and Weezy lets loose, but dips when he takes on the slower, more R&B oriented beats. You see, Weezy’s appeal is his quick flow and delivery, and when he slows it down, he struggles. Also, his lyrics are more inconsistent than ever, as it seems that he knows he’s hot right now and that people will just eat this up, regardless of substance. Or sometimes he is just baked out of his mind and his lyrics make no sense, or he repeats a line numerous times, as if he can’t think of what to say next.

But Weezy is at his best on tracks that are quick from the get-go and hit you over the head with booming bass, such as “A Milli.” If you disregard the annoying repetition in the background, it’s a huge song where Wayne is unleashed. While “Phone Home” is a ridiculous song, you can’t help but smile at Weezy channeling his inner UFO, and the Twilight Zone-like beat is nuts. “La La” is a David Banner produced joint, with Weezy and Cash Money accomplice Brisco give off good vibes, but the song is taken down a few notches with a poor verse from Busta Rhymes.

Weezy falters the most when he slows it down, such as on “Comfortable,” which features Babyface. It’s just not his style at all and really does a disservice to his delivery. Kanye West delivered the beat for the aforementioned track, as well as for “Tie My Hands,” “Shoot Me Down,” and “Let The Beat Build,” which are all good Kanye beats and would fit his style, but are hit or miss for Weezy. On “Tie My Hands,” Weezy gets serious and delivers some of his best lyrics, rhyming about the Katrina tragedy, while “Shoot Me Down” has more of an alternative vibe to it with marching beat drums and a guitar riff that needles in and out. But the worst song by far on this album is “Lollipop,” which coincidentally is his biggest hit ever, making all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. But nothing about it works. It’s too slow, Wayne’s lyrics are weak, and his flow is ruined by the use of a vocoder. It’s easily one of the first songs I skip on the album.

But the best song on the album is “Dr. Carter,” a creative track with a unique beat from Swizz Beatz. Taking on the concept of a doctor that has to save hip-hop and struggling rappers, Wayne steps up his lyrics while giving props to other rappers such as Kanye and Andre 3k, as the beat moves with a smooth jazz vibe backed by a vibrant bass line and subtle yet efficient horns.

Other tracks are strong because of their guests, such as “Mr. Carter” which features a killer verse from Jay-Z, while “You Ain’t Got Nuthin’” is carried by Juelz Santana, and “Got Money” will be a huge hit in the club, with help from R&B crooner, T-Pain. “Don’t Get It”, the closer, clocks in at nearly ten minutes, with about 5 of it dedicated to the song (which is decent), and ending with Weezy smoking a blunt and babbling about why people don’t like Al Sharpton, discusses how coke dealers are handled in the court of law, basically summing up how people “speculate before they informate,” and how that causes problems and misunderstandings. It’s a cool way to close out the album, with Weezy being somewhat socially conscious.

At the end of the day, Lil Wayne is a talented hip hop artist, but is inconsistent throughout Tha Carter III, showing glimpses of being the greatest, but other times coming off as nonsensical. Basically, C3 is a step down from Tha Carter II, but it has its moments, and if you are a fan of Weezy, you’ll be a fan of this. Don’t get me wrong, I greatly enjoy Lil Wayne, but in no way, shape, or form do I think he is the greatest alive. If he could deliver lyrics and go hard consistently on one of his label releases like he does on his mixtapes, then we could consider the argument, but until then, we’ll hold off. But for right now, we’ll settle with him being one of the hottest MC’s in the mainstream right now, but with work to do.

truth. he's put out some of the best mixtapes of the past couple years, it's a shame this one isn't as solid. can't wait to give it a shot though.

I love Wayne so I'm a little biased, but I dig this album. It's way better than I thought it was going to be anyways.
It's gonna get multiple listens all through the year I'm pretty sure too.

Best song "Mr. Carter"

I call them April babies, cause they Fools.

I got summer hatin on me cause I'm hotter than the sun
Got spring hatin on me cause I ain't never sprung
Winter hatin on me cause I'm colder than y'all
And I will never, I will never, I will never fall
I'm being hated on by the seasons
So f*** y'all hatin' for no reason.

For a rapper, if the lyrics are inconsistant and often don't make sense...the album immediately fails.

i think C3 is his best album, but not his best piece of work when compared to his other mixtapes like da drought 3 or even the carter 3 mixtape

You called him Wayne the first few paragraphs, then switched to Weezy throughout the rest...I don't know anything about this, but I'm assuming it is the same guy. Just a bit confusing to those who don't listen to this. Good review overall though. It gave a good brush through over what it was all about.

Even though the rating is to high at least you gave the "greatest rapper alive" a 5 for lyrics. Awful.

I think you lost me when you said Busta's verse was weak. Sure this is a pretty weird hip hop record, but cat is the best out there right now. Minus a little too much stoner philosophy this is a freaking classic.

Ok. Lil Wayne's record is better than most rap discs that came out within the last 12 months. If only because it's not full of ringtone songs and filler. It sounds like he's taking more risks than most.

I loved this album, and I dont think Weezy is "the best rapper alive."

The bad tracks (Comfortable, LaLa, Lollipop, the one with Santana on it) just get skipped. And for the most part, the good tracks are REALLY good. Can we please talk about "Let the Beat Build"? AWESOME SONG.

And I crack up to the beginning of "Shoot Me Down" even though I know it's coming: "I'm drinkin' hot tea, bitch. Feel meh."

Nothing Lil Wayne has made is a classic.

That being said, overall a pretty good review Drew. I'm not sure how you don't like Busta's verse, I thought it saved the song, and Fab and Wayne ran over Santana on that track. Dipset are collectively awful.

i think that this is a pretty dope album, lil wayne is the most consistent rapper out right now, he sounds alil retarded sometimes with his raps but overall its still good. Any one can really hate on this, but theres no point to , this album is gonna sell like hot cakes and hes gonna be even more rich than he already is.

Yeah, cuz anything mainstream is just terrible. I was asking how/why it sucked, not if you liked it which I already knew. I do like the fact you're showing your versatility but no way Atmosphere's album is better than this. No offense here, but I think this site, and you, should stick with bands and music you know. It would be like some underground rap website trying to review the new Fall out boy album or something, there's just not credibility.

No, that's not what I said at all. I said you should stick with other shit and then I related it to a rap website reviewing a new fall out boy album. I wouldn't put much stock into their review nor would I with yours. I wasn't really all the impressed and the fact that you have a lot of his songs doesn't really impress me. Anyone could dl that much, I'd say I'm a fan of his, and hip hop but I def wouldn't say I know it as well as the type of music mainly found on this site.

I was only giving an opinion toward your review. being that it public, and opinions are welcomed I thought that would be ok. I know you dont' care what I think, I got it but I'm going to still say it. All in all, I do tend to like almost all of your reviews.

I think this thread is getting too serious lol. I love listening to the carter III mainly because its just a fun record when your ready for a night out. The reason Weezy's lyrics don't make sense... drugs. I'm pretty sure he is drugged up 24/7, during the recording of this album. When the album is at it's best, the listener must also be impaired... at least that's what my studies have found.

She ride my spaceship 'til she hit the top

Don't worry why my wrist got so freeze
Tell a girl like Doritos that's not-cho cheese
Tell her friends like Frito's I'm tryin' too lay
I can only have one and I ain't tryin' to wait
This a song with Wayne so you know it's goin' melt
But you ain't finna murder me like everybody else
I'm a rap like I got some type respect for myself
I don't do it for my health, man, I do it for the belt, man
I do it to the death, 'til the roof get melt
100 degrees drop the roof, so the coupe don't melt
Man I flow so cold, chicken soup won't help
We need 4 more ho's, we need oh oh oh OH!
You know what it is when we out of town
We ball in 2 seats, and you out of bounds
So come here baby girl
You're now fuckin' with the best in the world

And she goin' to lick the rapper
And I just want to act like a porno flicking actor
I Anita Baker and now she caught up in that Rapture
I got so much chips I swear they call me Hewlett Packard
I got so much chips you can have a bag if you're a snacker
Greedy mother fudge cake, now tell me how that fudge taste
I do it for blood sake, suu woop think it's voodoo
How that roof do-di-dissipate
Your girl wants to participate
She so so sophisticated, 'cause her brain is off the chain
And then my diamonds are in the choir because
They sing from off my chain
And my Nina just joined the gang because
All she do is bang, like Ricky Martin, Wayne, and
Kanye pick your poison and if that woman want to cut
Then tell her I am Mr. Ointment
Tell her make an appointment with Mr. I-Can't-Make-An-Appointment
Take my lollipop and enjoy it... Remix!

Why would she, she's probably be the odd cookie
In the plastic bag, 'bout to get crushed by a building
I flushed out the feeling of me being the shit
'Cause I was leaving skid marks on everywhere I sit
I am everywhere I'm it like, hide-and-go and I can go anywhere
Eenie-meenie-meinie-mo I'm in your, neighborhood
Area, CD thing, tape deck, iPod, your girlfriend
And she say I got great sex
Safe sex is great sex, better wear a latex
'Cause you don't want that late text
That "I think I'm late," text
(Laughter), so wrap it up
Bu-bu-but he's so sweet, sh-she wanna lick the rapper

eh, I thought this album was weak, but people need to realize that just because you don't like what's being reviewed, doesn't mean the review itself sucks.

but yeah, only songs I will ever listen to again are the Carter tracks, Lollipop, Comfortable (just for the beat, Weezy ruins this song), and A Milli (which is one of the only songs of his that I think his lyrics work well in)

I asked about this in another thread, but no one responded. Has anyone heard the Lollipop Remix feat. Kanye? It's far superior, and if you haven't heard it, let me know and I'll upload it.

love it. better than the original.

eh, I thought this album was weak, but people need to realize that just because you don't like what's being reviewed, doesn't mean the review itself sucks.

For a rapper, if the lyrics are inconsistant and often don't make sense...the album immediately fails.

I agree

because the really isn't much appeal as far as how their voice sounds the lyrics are a huge part of the appeal. Thats why i like artist like Lupe Fiasco and Common because they have intelligent lyrics

I admit, Weezy has some awful lyrics, but he I think he kills it most of the time. If you're looking for some "intelligent" lyrics or a rapper who "actually talks about real shit" then Wayne's not for you. If you want some fairly witty and comical rhymes, he's one of the best.

Wayne isn't about changing the world for the better. He's not gonna talk about politics in every song. Don't expect him to talk about making anything more positive. That's not him, and the sooner people realize that, the better. He just makes fun music.

On that note, where's Eminem?

Lollipop is a terrible song. It would have worked better if it were a demo so that he could experiment with it, and then release something interesting. The guy has to fill an entire verse with "Call me so I can make it juicy for ya" rather than actually do something.
He should have made that a B-side, or on a mixtape, and then actually release something better when he's got the hang of slower beats and a synthesizer.

I talked about this earlier. Have you heard the Lollipop Remix with Kanye West? It's 1000 times better. If you want it, I can upload it. But even the original is still enjoyable, to me. Are the lyrics awful? Yeah, but it's still a fun song.

And Eminem? He's somewhere getting more terrible than he already is.

Nothing Lil Wayne has made is a classic.

That being said, overall a pretty good review Drew. I'm not sure how you don't like Busta's verse, I thought it saved the song, and Fab and Wayne ran over Santana on that track. Dipset are collectively awful.

Please give Dedication and Da Drought 3 a spin or two and get back to me.

man. people tripp too much.
this was a good review.
I enjoyed most of this album but i also thought this wasn't weezy at his best.
i just didnt think it is as fun as his other shit like all of his mixtapes.
like dedication II. weezy killed on that shit. 'workin em' is probably one of my fav songs.
and some of his songs on TCIII just dont seem 'real'.
like the song 'shot to the heart' ft rick ross where he samples a song from Heart. that song hits hard.
i thought this cd had lots of potential with all the producers and artists on it, but i was pretty disappointed. but its still a pretty good album.

it frustrates me beyond belief when i hear people talkin about how this guy saved hip hop and how hes the hottest in the game right now and all that other nonsense. dude sounds like a dying goat first of all. second of all.. he's all word play, no substance. granted, he says some things that'll make you laugh, and sometimes he may even make you think (usually about whether he makes up his own words or not)... but there's absolutely zero substance regarding his lyrics. you wanna talk about the best in the game, lupe fiasco HANDS DOWN.

if wayne was a goat, i'd say he's a very talented artist... but since he's not actually a goat.. he's fucking terrible

this album is very very good to me. lil wayne is definitely the hottest in the hip hop game right now, no question. hard flow. i don't know what everyone is saying about weezy's lyrics being subpar or inconsistent...dood is a demon. i think you fools don't understand what he's saying. and yeah yeah, i've heard all the lupe fiasco and this or that...and yes, lupe fiasco is easily the hottest lyricist out there. the fact of the matter is that lupe is not selling records the same way wayne is. lil wayne is delivering hot singles, and for his die hard fans, he's dropping hard, hard tracks on you. lupe doesn't hold the same mainstream appeal (and no, i'm not saying that's a bad thing, i hope lupe never records a song with "single" in mind).

the problem with this album is a lot of the songs aren't genuine to me. weezy needs to stick to simple beats and complex lyricism (a la milli and lollipop remix with kanye). i hate the r&b bullshit that rappers feel obligated to make when they are in fact the hottest in the game.

that "i think i'm late" ex

personally, i think this verse is genius. the big thing that stands out to me about lil wayne is the fact that he always sounds like he's having a blast in the booth. i feel like this man just loves spitting verses, which is probably the reason for an unlimited amount of mixtapes and LPs.

this album obviously comes with a lot of hype, and therefore a lot of opinions that are mostly mixed. i'd personally give this a 85%.

like it or not, it's not a matter of opinion anymore. lil wayne really is the hottest in the game right now. you don't have to like him to admit it.

“Lollipop,” which coincidentally is his biggest hit ever, making all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. But nothing about it works. It’s too slow, Wayne’s lyrics are weak, and his flow is ruined by the use of a vocoder. It’s easily one of the first songs I skip on the album

I hate to say this...But I totally and I mean totally don't dig Lil' Wayne...
I think there are so many better rappers out there,

and I honestly don't know why he has taken so much of the limelight as of late..
I don't find his lyrics to be that appealing at all.

He might have great flow, and an ability to make a good chorus....but I honestly do not think his lyrics would stand the test of time. It's cool to rhyme and make many metaphors...but when you leave a song, and you felt like nothing that person said really made an impact, what is the song to you?

I think the new Nas mixtape speaks volumes, and to be honest. I think Nas is and always has been...Rap's last great hope(besides independent rappers and what have you)

I do enjoy a bit of Lupe, but from this...I definitely will not be buying this. or listening to it.
