a few years back Entertainment Weekly came out with a list of their 100 favorite soundtracks, 100 is a bit much to include in a poll so here's the top 20
full list can be seen here http://www.greatestfilms.org/100soundtracks.html

Oh, is this only original soundtracks? So, something like Forrest Gump would not be on here?

I'll think about this one.

pulp fiction is 28 and there a lot of old songs on that so I don't think it's only original songs

I picked Trainspotting, the music fits the film perfectly on that.

But Forrest Gump's my favorite! Eh, I'll go with A Hard Day's Night.

the judgement night soundtrack doesn't get nearly as much love as it should in lists like this.

not just from a music standpoint, and certainly not from a film standpoint, but the impact that soundtrack had on music is ridiculous. it essentially created a genre. even if you don't wanna give it credit for creating it, it made it relevant and lead to the big rap rock boom of the early 00's.

sure, there were collaborations before (aerosmith/run dmc, etc..), but this album showed that people were more than willing to listen to a full album worth of this type of music. and not to mention a lot of the songs were fucking good.

now, i'm in no way supporting rap rock. but for a soundtrack to impact the popular music scene as much as this did is pretty substantial as far as i'm concerned. especially when the formula was attempted to be copied (spawn) and had zero to no effect on the industry.

that's probably my favorite on the list too, there are just too many good options that I can't vote for one
