Their album transports you to "simpler days" you could say. I feel like I'm on some pioneer trail or something when I listen to it. Very good.

I haven't listened to the LP, but the Sun Giant EP was good, if the prototypical folk rock that's expected by a Sub Pop band.

i just picked up the album on recommendation from will (who got it on recommendation from pitchfork obviously haha) but regardless how predictable that pattern may be i enjoy the album a lot, my favorite song on it is "meadowlark", and the other standouts are "blue ridge mountain", "your protector", and "tiger mountain peasant song".

I got hooked on their self titled when it was released.

Track two off of it is one of those tunes you will be humming all day.

PITCHFORK HYPE BAND ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but seriously I have never listened and in all likelyhood will never listen to this band.

not too much hype for them on this site though.

i love how just 6 months ago no one whined about pitchfork hype for any band, when it clearly held a more prevalent role on AP.

airik625
10/07/08, 08:07 AM
Their S/T has been a huge hit for me.

theguy77
10/07/08, 09:56 AM
Not for me. I like Pitchfork, I don't always like the music they like and dislike what they dislike but their reviews are awesome and extremely poignant and insightful, plus when they trash a band it's without exception hilarious - see their Anathallo and ROC review.

Plus Pitchfork have great taste by and large. I you look at the stuff they give 10's to - Daydream Nation, Kid A, YHF, OK Computer, Homogenic, This Year's Model and so on it's all brilliant and classic stuff. If you compare that with that got great marks here (Saosin, Thrice, Underoath) it's a no contest which is the better site. Plus the reviews here are pretty amaeturish and descriptive rather than saying anything interesting or insightful.

oh no i wasnt comparing APs user reviews to pitchfork hahaha you'd have to be crazy to think AP made better ones. i was just saying that pitchfork hype manifested itself more on AP a mere six months ago than now, but nobody really seemed to be bothered by that hype back then. now i hear very little about pitchfork ratings/groups on here but i bump a fleet foxes thread and everyone's like "PITCHFORK HYPE" haha.

i think you should give the album a chance. its folky but with a sense of 60s pop in the melodies in my opinion.

theguy77
10/07/08, 10:22 AM
I think that in 2008 there's been almost no good music so the stuff Pitchork is hyping is way worse than what they hyped last year.

Last year we got Battles, Radiohead, Burial and Panda Bear.

Where as this year we got Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, TV On the Radio and Portishead.

2007 naturally wins hands down. Also imo the stuff Pitchfork loves as opposed to likes seems to have become inscreasingly arbitrary over the last year or more and were as maybe two or three years ago when Pitchfork gave something a 9 or more you knew it would be awesome know they dish out those scores to albums I find mediocre like Panda Bear, Vampire Weekend and TV On the Radio.

hmm yeah i can see where you're coming from. oh well, i liked the album, and i dont think you should be using trendy bands like vampire weekend as a basis to judge every band pitchfork ever rates high. doesnt do the better bands justice.

IWasaCamera

great timing guys cause i listened to it like 4 times over the past two days, excellent pop-folk album. the music makes me feel like its summer haha, such great hooks and harmonies throughout. "ragged wood", "quiet houses", and "blue ridge mountains" are the ones that hit me hardest. "heard them stirring" is also a very heartwarming instrumental. in fact thats how i'd describe this band and their natural-sounding wood reverbrations -- heartwarming.

Yeah, my audio professor brought them up when discussing reverb in the production haha. Totally adds to that natural-sounding warm wood sound. It's a really solid album, and Oliver James is a good closer in my eyes. Well played, and i look forward to round two.
