I was out of town for a few days this week so of course the plane trip to and fro as well as the actual relaxation period consisted of music, music, music. Music is the only thing that can keep me sane as well as many of you I'm sure. With that said, my week consisted of listening to the following:
Scary Kids Scaring Kids (http://www.scarykids.com) - This is definitely my favorite unsigned band. They're not making a new genre or anything extremely groundbreaking, but they're mixing up a genre full of copycats with their own style and spice. Give a listen to the amazing vocals and guitar work in the song "What's Up Now" and you'll see what I mean right off the back. I'm sure in due time these guys will be signed .. they at least deserve to be.
Dredg (http://www.dredg.com) - This has to be one of the most melodic and organic bands out there. This band takes anything they can find to produce some of the most amazing sounds and can't forget to mention that the vocals are by far some of the best out there. There's a reason bands like Chevelle and Papa Roach and the Snocore Tour with Sparta, Glassjaw, and Hot Water Music from last year have taken notice of this band and invited them on the road.
The New Amsterdams (http://www.newams.net/) - Matt Pryor has to have one of the most recognizable vocies out there today. His voice and writing shines through on this Get Up Kids side project. With as good as Jason is saying the new Get Up Kids album is, this can just wet my appetitte until that is released.
The Spill Canvas (http://www.thespillcanvas.com) - It's incredible to listen to an amazing set of songs with such beautiful music to back such astounding writing and honest lyrics and come to the realization that the person behind it is someone your age. All I can do is sit back and wish that I could right as good as Nick and play my heart out on the guitar. Give a listen to "All Hail The Heartbreaker" and just play close to attention to the rhythms strumming from that acoustic guitar. One of my new favorite acts. Thanks Jason for pointing this kid out.
Fall Out Boy (http://www.falloutboyrock.com) - I'm way behind on this band and I know that, but after all the talk I've heard and quotes I've read in the signatures in the forums about this band and what they have to say I've finally picked up "Take This To Your Grave." This is definitely pop-punk at it's best. For a style that I'm not really into this band keeps my attention and anxious for the next song from track to track. By far some of the best lyrics in a genre full of simplicity. I just had to put them in my list this week to make sure that those who have yet to pick up this album finally get off their butts and pick up one heck of an album.
I know we're suppose to only have five picks, but I have to add one more:
Nightmare of You (http://www.nightmareofyou.com) - Brandon, formerly of The Movielife, has a new band with some released demos on their website. I haven't been so anxious for a band based on demos since Straylight Run. This band has the potential to have as much sucess as SLR. Hopefully enough of you are picking up on these guys.
Well, that's another week wrapped and now to see what this one will have to offer. 'Til next week ...
