I've used coins before, which give a very different, but interesting tone.

A guy in my band will fold up an index card or piece of paper to his desired thickness and play with that. It usually works all right, just don't play too hard with too thin a piece, or you get it falling apart on you.

Picks are cheap. Just buy a pack of new ones...

I actually use my fingers or fingernails to strum sometimes when I can't find a pick. Its not hard at all.

Yeah, but do it with fingernails or the fleshy part of your finger.

If you try to put your fingers like a pick, having your index finger's nail area hitting the strings (assuming you don't have nails, like me) things can get dangerous. One time I cut my finger open and bled all over a guitar. It was pretty hXc.

Don't use coins, they're really bad for the guitar.

Ouch, I do it with my finger nails though because I really don't cut them that short on my playing hand. I still get wierd marks all over my skin and nails though.

What he said, I broke my E string while using one when I restrung it 2 weeks before.

Not bad for the guitar. Bad for strings, maybe.

I wouldn't play rhythm with it, but a lead guitar it could do just fine. One really popular guitarist, I forget who, actually used QUARTERS in all his playing.

Yeah, I didn't mean for the guitar.

It's not terrible using coins, it just increases the wear and tear on them causing you to have to change them more often than you should. I use them myself every once in a while, but I also don't play guitar much.

You can get a dozen picks for like $4. I've never ran out of picks but that's cause I'm not a cheap bastard.

I use coins for the different tone they give. It's not a matter of being a "cheap bastard".

No, I was saying too cheap to buy a ton of picks so you'd never run out. There is nothing wrong with using a coin if you want a different tone but using them because you lost all your picks seems kind of lame.

fold up paper, coins fuck up your strings. With paper you can get bend and thicknesses you want. This thread reminds me of when I couldn't strum properly and kept dropping the plec in the soundhole lol.

You really should have like 50 picks. They're that cheap.
