I love local music but I'm wondering how other people feel... I see a lot of people on here who complain about their local scene (either they don't have one or "it just sucks"). I'm wondering if this is a general consensus or just a few people who either do have a shitty scene or don't bother to really look?

this isn't just some question i'm pondering, but i actually plan to put whatever feedback to use... so thanks in advance!

I just really follow my friends' bands.

I love my scene. Lots of people complain about it, but I think it's great. We have a really great hardcore and ska scene, but we also have a good amount of pop-punk. Plus, I'm friends with most of the "bigger" local bands around here, so it makes for fun shows. I go to probably 3 or 4 local shows a month. I mean, my avatar is my favorite local band around here. :-)

Most of the local bands around here I hear about are like Valencia or The High Court before they get decently huge. Not horrible bands but nothing to be proud of.

There's one band that goes to a high school near me who are incredible, in my opinion. I do my best to follow them but I'm not into myspace or whatever other internet sites they post on so I have a hard time. ;-)

Thanks to August Burns Red, Lancaster is now overflowing with metal/hardcore bands. Mostly they're all garbage, but some (This or the Apocalypse and Texas in July) are very talented. It's been like this for years, but recently a few bands that are willing to try something different: old-time emo (We Sang Songs), pop-punk(Speak Frantic and The Right Coast), and lately there has been a huge surge of artsy/indie artists (Katie Becker).

The problem nowadays isn't a lack of bands, but rather a lack of venues. The xbrocorex dudes' antics have resulted in the Legions and VFWs no longer renting out for shows. There is an unbelievable number of churches, but they strictly allow only Christian bands. So your only choices for venues are The Chameleon Club(way to expensive), The Sugar Tank (exclusive to owner), and a few firehalls (far too small and out of the way).

Capitol Risk went to a high school about 5 minutes from me. They even took a detour from touring to come play at my friend's 18th birthday party cause they went to school together.

So I guess we have pop/alternative around here.

Yeah. Saint Louis is a fun town. Though, I've only ever played shows at Building R, but the shows I've played there all ruled.

We spawned Powerspace. That's...about...it.

Kidding, kind of. Actually, our scene is decent for how small of a town we are. Aside from Powerspace, though, it's been a steady rotation of small bands that never really go anywhere (except for The Culling Song who played Warped Tour in '05 and Look Afraid who are getting pretty well-known and are a conglomeration of other bands) and then break up.

At least some of the Circa Survive guys grew up in a town about 15 minutes away from where I currently live. Which is pretty cool. I have one of those weird connections to Colin Frangicetto actually. (He's the son of the secretary of a friend of my moms)

Coming from a town of about 11k we actually have a decent scene. There really is just one crappy metalcore garbage band, but outside of that we have an excellent punk band, a great pop-punk/indie band, and some excellent acoustic song writers.

I enjoy the scene here. I've seen Darkest Hour live about a million times, haha. But yeah, I like it. :-)

I would love to see Darkest Hour. They're playing with Misery Signals around here in August.

Oh gosh! They're great live. I can't get enough of them. The audience really gets into it, it's wonderful. Oh yeah, they're playing at that Thrash and Burn tour with them! I wouldn't mind seeing Stick to Your Guns.

underoath went to high school like five minutes from me.
crossbreed actually hung out at my high school for some fuckin reason.
tres bien was on that tv show with all those competing bands recently.
cool guys in tres bien.
other than that, the scene here sucks. a bunch of bands that think they've already made it.

My local scene is actually really good. Though to be honest I'm getting sick of seeing all of these sound-alike (albeit talented) metal bands play here. We have 2 pop-punk bands who are absolute shit and then, well, actually, we don't have much.

But the local promoters do a really good job in getting the mid-sized bands who tour nationally to play here.

actually, even though all of the powerspace memebers originally met at Miami of Ohio, they'rea ll from chicago and consider themselves a chicago band. So I'm going to take them away from you and put them in my city where they belong :-p

but obviously chicago shits out a lot of pop/powerpop/pop-punk.

my favorites are

The Audition
Real Lunch
1997
The Academy Is...

those are the ones that i think of off the top of my head.

Don't understand why people have a connection to the local scene. If it's good music, I'll listen to it, if it's bad I won't. The only local stuff I go see is my friends.

See, I have a love/hate relationship with our St. Louis scene. We have awesome bands, don't get me wrong. My problem is how few people support the scene and go to shows. To list some good bands: Dead City Dregs, the Humanoids, Stiff Kittens, Suburban Smash, Suburban Epidemic, Disturbing Lou, the Deficit, Benedict Arnold, gah I could keep going but I'm lazy. I just wish it had more support.

I live in Delaware so you can see why we don't have a really good local scene. A couple bands catch my eye every once in a while. We have a really awesome promoter that works his ass off and actually gets really great bands to play here. So I don't really complain.

Where I live, we have a lot of high school bands and most of em are pretty good. Headtrain is one of them, and they more of a Rage Against the Machine meets Janes Addiction. They alright. Lannen Fall is probably one of the most popular bands around. My uncle was one of the original founders and he chills with them all the time. I've met them and they're wicked chill. Also, Ice Nine Kills are from Swampscott, Ma and they are pretty good too. We just have a lot of hardcore punk bands.

I don't even think North Idaho or eastern Washington has a scene, besides a few shitty metal bands.

I've been to the Grange up your way a couple times and those were some of the best shows I've ever attended. There may not be that many bands up in Delaware, but they're infinitely better than most of the bands in Lancaster.

There used to be a pretty decent scene here in Lexington, Ky. The main show promoter around here quit doing shows, and it's kinda sucked since. We have had some somewhat popular bands come from here, though, The 95 Theses (RIP), Emarosa, Trumpets, and O Jerusalem.
