When is this (http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/music/wire/sns-ap-downloading-music,0,7960312.story?coll=sns-ap-music-headlines) crap going to stop?

whatever...the more the RIAA does this, the more it encourages downloaded. maybe they'll learn...if not... maybe they'll go bankrupt from all the fines they'll end up having to pay in court. that would be nice.

although i do think that a lot of what the riaa is doing is unnecessary, these bands need to earn money, too. this is their job. and for these indie bands it doesn't pay very much. i was reading kurt kobain: journals today and he was saying how he's working all these jobs that he hates. in addition to practicing, recording, etc. it wouldn't kill people to buy a cd every once in a while. and if you don't like to pay $15-20, buy a used one. or if you live in new england, go to newbury comics.

summary: big bands don't need money, but sue anyway. indie bands need money, but don't make a big deal about it and continue to record, tour, write, record, tour, write, record, tour...

the only problem with buying used records is that it doesnt support the artists. it supports the used record shops. In fact...CD sales dont really support the artists either...its the live shows that do and the merch that they sale. Record Labels suck almost all the money from record sales. So when you buy a cd... only about 1% of that money goes to the artists itself.

I read somewhere that some pop star got like 10 cents per cd sold for $15. The labels aren't supporting the artists because they feel the deserve to have their music bought properly, they're trying to line their own pockets. They don't care about the artists at all.

and to answer the title question....when people stop downloading

I stopped downloading a few months ago, but I was wondering if anyone knew, would I still be suspect to being sued? Even though I haven't shared files since October, November? It's not as if I had a huge amount of files either. Just wondering.

Does anyone know if people who get their music of mIRC can get sued. Also what about people from Canada or the UK ? Do these laws apply to them ?

indie bands woudlnt be as big as they are if kazza and napster werent invented, so even tho the indie bands are losing a piece of the small amount of money they get due to downloading...they're also gaining bc they prob woudlnt eb where they are right now without it

Bands don't make much money selling there records, They mostly make there money playing shows and selling merch while on tour and other things. Most bands do get about 10 to 20 cents per CD due that the record company needs to recoop what they had spent on promoting the band, paying to make the record, distribution and many many other things. Most indie bands don't mind anyway because they wouldn't be anywhere without the spread of word and mixes and CDs being passed around.

The RIAA is retarded, I can see how it (online music sharing) can hurt artists...........but they just take it to far

This crap is going to stop when the RIAA feels that they're making enough money again.

My opinion is this. I don't think I would know half the bands I do without being able to download music. I am not about to go spend 13 bucks on a CD in which I don't know if I am going to like or not. So I download if I like the band I will go see them play and maybe buy a shirt. If I really like the band then I will buy their CD also. I also understand that the record company gets most of the money from CD sales. But they are also the ones that front the money for bands to buy a van or record the CD so the band themselves don't have to front it. But I think in the long run file sharing helps bands names get out a lot more than if they didn't have file sharing. Also newbury comics is awesome.

you said it
i never, literally NEVER bought CD's or was really into music a tone before DLing, b/c buying CD's is expensive, and i never thought it was really worth it, but now taht i download i have found so many bands i really love, and in the past year i've bought SO many CD's cause i really love them. in short, DLing causes me to spend MORE on cd's. it's not like i'm ever dying to hear one single whenever so much that i will buy a whole album. now i know that i really like what i'm getting.
