Yeah, Moon Ska Records, Nyc 1983-2000. Put out some of the best ska bands ever, and got me into a lot of ska bands who I would have never heard of otherwise...ones across the globe, too.

Pick it up, you guys.

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 03:17 PM
Haha. You're my favorite poster thus far, next to Kilo.

versus_god
06/09/08, 03:29 PM
Haha Chris is the best, although I don't think he's that much into the ska thing.

I'm surprised that the love hasn't started a-flowin' in this thread yet. Amazing label with a seemingly endless number of amazing bands on its roster.

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 03:31 PM
Agreed...Do you think it should probably be moved to the General section?

versus_god
06/09/08, 03:32 PM
I honestly don't know if it'd get any more replies over there.

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 03:35 PM
..Damn.

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 03:51 PM
So.... if you know about Kemuri, they had a reunion show in December that I wanted to go to so bad.

It was in Japan.

KatieKutthroat.
06/09/08, 04:55 PM
Moon Ska had some great bands. The Slackers, the Toasters, Bad Manners, Hepcat...good stuff. Some of my favorite ska bands right there.

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 04:57 PM
Hellz yeah. Remember Laurel Aitken?

KatieKutthroat.
06/09/08, 05:03 PM
Oh man, Laurel Aitken was sooo good. I love The Story So Far.

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 05:13 PM
Haha, fo sho, and now it's every poppy punk-emo-rock band's name/album title

bucket's label! although they had a crap load of pop-punk/ska bands on their roster (that weren't my jam), boy did they have some real beauties as well. probably the most significant label in supporting ska music since the days of studio one & trojan

I'm really glad you posted to this thread. I couldnt think of your username :)

I'll try to post the Moonska letter I wrote if I could find it..when I was 14 & starting a ska band(i praised their work efforts). haha. Well actually never mind, I guess they have it (or had it, depending on what they did with their 'fan mail'). Anyway, Big Abby or whatever sent me a package of awesome stuff.

haha good on ya. that's really cool, but also doesn’t surprise me in a way. that label was so generous, always looking after their fans & bands, & supported the music. they were a label that worked for their fans, not the other way around, all in an effort to spread the music we all cherished so much. it was a beautiful relationship, where everyone really looked out for everyone else, those were the times. it's a bloody shame more labels, ska or otherwise, don't take a similar approach. oh & what'd they send ya mate?

chris should get in on this thread, this label would be good for him. as much as i try get him into traditional ska, his heart lies with punk music haha. although i'm pretty sure he listens to westbound train now? so i haven't done tooo bad haha

Yeah, exactly. I want to say Kill Rock Stars is like how they were....but I'm not completely positive. I could always ask my friends who just got signed to them when I get a chance.

Let's start the conversion process.

oh & what'd they send ya mate? Stickers, patches, a response letter, a tight ska zine/newsletter, etc(I cant remember the rest!) but it was 2sweet. They told me to keep up the dream, find my inspiration, and contact them in a couple of years or felt confident enough after I've played some shows and stuff. Never happened though, obviously.

yea i told him a good dozen times to pick up an album or two from westbound haha. he's stubbornly punk rock that boy isn't he haha, gotta love him though

Truer stories were never told.

streetlight fan are ya mate? they're a hard working band, with reasonable talent, but i can't get into them. i'm a traditional man haha. heard the new slackers? as always, that's a real goodie

oh wow that's really cool of them. sometimes all it takes to make a change in a life is a little encouragement & belief. exactly the sort of thing that makes that label so missed

streetlight (being from my town) is the band that got me into ska in general, great guys, even if i prefer more traditional bands.

Yeah, but in order for these kinds of transitions to work, you gotta take a band thats pretty similar to the tastes that bind you, or can remind you of them. I totally agree w/ the traditional though, with the exception of a FEW bands like Voodoo Glow Skulls.

heard the new slackers? as always, that's a real goodie

Nope, Al Green's new one + Slackers, Bad Astronaut...god I gotta write this down!

Seriously. I cant even describe how much that meant to me and how much of a shock it was. I think today I'd compare it to the equivalent of a Myspace message response from your favorite band, haha.

yea a lot of people seem to be lately, it's crazy, but great. ted's the man. i got my first scene points on ap (when they existed back in the day) for being a big ted fan haha

i started with the slackers & just fell headfirst into a world of music i could never had imagined had i not taken that plunge. the roots side of ska will always have me calling

yea i see what ya saying, as i was saying above, i feel in love with the slackers very early on & just haven't looked back. traditional all the way, i just love it. enjoy tracing the roots right back to some of the first ever ska records, taking in world music, funk, soul, swing, just everything that surrounds the real sounds of sweet ska

yea must of been great. haha i don't do myspace, so no idea. i think it must have been great many many years ago to have been recommended to studio one by a young bob marley (who was working as a talent scout for them during his teens haha)

I'm not on Myspace either, but that's what kids are like about it. Oh well, epic joke fail on my part!

So...the Specials reunion, how sweet is that?

El_Jeffe
06/09/08, 08:01 PM
oh haha sweet as. i'm behind on all those sorta things

for some reason i never thought it would happen, lucky buggers who get to see it. it's the original release, aka that of their debut album, isn't it?

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 08:03 PM
Yeah, actually all of their first album and half of their second.

This was the first and only news I've submitted to AP, very worth it, but it never ended up getting posted.

El_Jeffe
06/09/08, 08:12 PM
even though it'd never happen for obvious reasons haha, i'd love it if hall performed a couple fun boy three songs while they're at it

seriously? some of the only news worth reading & it doesn't get posted...

Dre Okorley
06/09/08, 09:13 PM
Ha, yeah...I actually posted a thread (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=322097) about that, wondering what was up. The Specials are a big deal, at least to some of us. Some of my q's were pretty much answered.
