in my opinion
favorites:
mickelson (playing well, will need to drive the ball extremely well as he has been doing lately)
woods (will the knee hold up? or better yet, even if it does, will he be rusty or fresh?)
sergio (he's been driving the ball well and hitting greens, but the flatstick will probably be his nemesis)
p. harrington (has a great all-around game and a good open record but choked at winged foot)
dark horses:
stricker
paul casey

I think Mickelson, Goosen and Furyk are my picks and those are pretty easy ones to pick. I like Ogilvy but his track record at Torrey Pines is awful. Harrington and Garcia are good bets to contend too.
My dark horses
Tim Clark
Justin Leonard, I know he is extremely short and its a long course but I love the way he is playing this year
Definately looking forward to this killing about 6 hours at work tomorrow

I got my money on Furyk...I really don't expect Mickelson to play particularly well, despite his recent play. One of these days he'll learn to club down on 18 with a one stroke lead...rather than have to hack out of the rough for a miracle save.
It'll be interesting to see how Tiger plays during Round 2...Round 1 won't see the effects really
Mickelson lives in Rancho Santa Fe..... this is basically his private course.

Once they got away from Berman, the commentary has been pretty good. I was watching a lot of players miss putts off the edges, thinking they were probably all thinking "Its the US Open, this has to break more than I think"...and a second later the commentators brought it up.
Just dear god, do not go back to Chris Berman and whoever was with him...it was terrible...the amount of puns damn near broke my mute button
StuGrimson

Im in the minority of people who actually dont mind Berman doing golf, though Ill take anyone over Johnny Miller.

"Many people think Sergio Garcia will be a major contender in this championship...he's been playing very well lately"
(pause)
"He just needs to get off to a good start, thats the key really"

(Sergio's tee shot is 20yds wide of the fairway)

not too good so farCasey is a bit of an enigma. Out of the young Brits I think he has the most potential but in majors he always seems to get off to rough starts. At the last couple US Opens he's blown up the first day and then worked his way back to the top 10. I think in the last 4 years he's had the low round of the week at a major at least 3 or 4 times.
Steve Stricker seems to be on his way back down after a great 2 year comeback.

Harrington +7It surprises me how no one ever looks into when Goosen fell off the tracks. People seem to forget that he was a 73 or better away from a 3rd US Open in 5 years at Pinehurst in 2005. He didn't break 80 that final round and really hasn't been the same since. Everyone seems to point to 2006 and the driver problems that started then but I think it took him a long time to get over that.
StuGrimson

He couldnt handle the pressure of playing with Jason Gore. That was a shocker that day, he was the one guy I said wasnt capable of ballooning that round but he did it as bad as anyone. That was probably the most shocking collapse Ive seen in a major in a long time.
He was always a guy who would hit it in the fairway in his drive and when he did that he would never get into trouble. Make his pars and be able to avoid the big numbers. Then he just started spraying it off the tee and his scrambling was just awful.
Now his accuracy and GIR seems to be plummeting but his scrambling is much better. I think he is due for a turnaround but I should have seen that this wasnt the week to do it.

Even as big of a Tiger fan as I am, who was 7 back, I thought Goosen had it locked up. I figured Gore would blow up, which he did, but Goosen had hit it decent all week but was having a Shinnecock-like week on the greens. I miss seeing him and Ernie contending but it was nice to see Ernie put a solid round together which would have been better if not for the back break on 8, or his 17th hole.
Andy North just said on ESPN2 that there is no marine layer this morning which means the course will be much firmer much earlier as compared to yesterday. This is definitely a good break for the guys with the late-early draw who can go out this morning and post a number.

If Tiger wins they will hail it as an amazing accomplisment with his injury, if he loses they will say he only lost because of his injury. He said himself it only hurts after he swings, not during a swing so I dont buy that it will make a big difference.
I also noticed he would grimace a lot and show the pain when he was hitting bad shots but then when he was hitting good shots you couldnt even tell he was having any knee issues. Milking it for the camera I guess.

I love Pinehurst. Probably my favorite course to watch.
i played it two years ago and it was like a religious experience. by far my favorite course to play, in real life and on tiger woods for 360.

nah, actually 81. i hit the ball about as good as i ever have. i doubled 17 and bogeyed 18 too.
i was on fire until it started pouring at around the 13th hole...we were all under a tree and got soaked. when it let up i came back and made double on 14, but sort of held it together for 15 and 16.

watching this at work, good times
my prediction: tiger goes down with a knee injury on the 16th hole. he gets carried off and then wheel chaired to the trainers room, then 5 minutes later he returns and nails two hole in ones on the final 2 holes and wins the us open. he then beats out paul pierce by 1 vote to win the academy award for best actor.

my prediction: you're an ass.
pierce was stabbed 11 (elevennnnn) times and played twenty days later. this guy is no phony.
the only fake thing about the finals is the amount of press kobe gets for being such a "great team player and leader" now.
back to golf...that tiger punch outta the bunker was miserable.

Its the NBC coverage that just kills it for me for Tiger even more, I can handle CBS broadcasts. NBC is the fox news of golf. Its Tiger this and that, I dont get to see hardly any shots from any other players. If Tiger hits a bad shot they have to make an excuse for him, it just pisses me off as a golf fan who loves to see golf not just 5 hours of Tigers biography.
So ya my hatred of Tiger Woods is mainly due to Johnny Miller and the fact that I love so many other golfers that the coverage pretty much refuses to show unless your name is Tiger or Phil (who I cant stand either)
"he plays better with more of a happy face".
really?

it shows no respect to the course or your opponent/paired players. its like a kid throwing a tantrum.
especially if you are a pro, you shouldn't be doing that shit. tiger dropping F bomb's everytime he doesnt hit it in the middle of the fairway is plenty of "passion" already.
it shows no respect to the course or your opponent. its like a kid throwing a tantrum.
i would say doing it repeatedly is inappropriate. occasionally letting your emotions get the best of you is acceptable.

I agree. That commercial with his dad talking about his concentration and composure going. Then the next shot he hits he throws his club. Not the sign of concentration. Just being a baby.
