I swear by AP.net for great music news, but it doesnt seem to cover many small british bands. This is completely understandable as it is an American site, and how are Americans meant to know about small British bands?!

Anyway, I'd like to inform some people of the up and coming British bands, and please feel free to let me know what you think of them, and also suggest your own!

So here are some bands that are doing alright in G.B :

tonight is goodbye (http://www.myspace.com/tonightisgoodbye)
you me at six (http://www.myspace.com/youmeatsix)
monroe (http://www.myspace.com/monroeband)
lights and sounds (http://www.myspace.com/lightsandsoundsmusic)
playing favourites (http://www.myspace.com/playingfavouritesband)
the auteur (http://www.myspace.com/theauteuruk)
kill the arcade (http://www.myspace.com/killthearcade)
jaimison (http://www.myspace.com/jaimisonband)
canterbury (http://www.myspace.com/canterbury)
kids in glass houses (http://www.myspace.com/kidsinglasshouses) (getting huge over here)
paige (http://www.myspace.com/paigeuk)

it would be nice if the american people checked out those bands, and the british people gave feedback/added their own to the list!

theyre probably not going to cover bands that most people have never heard about and dont care about. there are tons of smaller bands in america i love they never talk about. people might start freaking out if every other post isnt about say anything, saves the day, or brand new.

because these bands aren't being covered, i am doing this. I dont expect AP.net to cover them, but I think these bands are all quality and want other people to hear them.

I'd like to hear about some american small bands. These bands are all 'making it' over here though.

loads of bands have come out of wales in the past few years, and are doing awesome.
e.g. lostprophets, funeral for a friend, bullet for my valentine, the blackout, kids in glass houses.

its kind of cool that some american people are saying which british bands they like.
i hope you all check out the bands at the top, cos they really are worth a listen!

Radiohead is the most recent decent British band I can think of. Meaning, there aren't too many phenomena's coming out of England now a days. But maybe they're just camping out there, who knows.

British music is not in a good way at all right now however Radiohead and Portishead made arguably the best albums of last and this year between them so it's not all bad.
oh come on, Ben, you gotta represent!

I thought I was the only person on this site who liked BMTH. They're pretty much the only band I really want to see on warped

They'd be mentioned if they were any good.

Field Music is a really good British band for those interested.

i didn't pick BMTH cos i don't believe they need any more promotion. for a small UK band a lot of americans already know about them. its amazing how fast they have grown. over here, they were getting huge, and from magazines, AP etc it seemed they were making a name for themselves in america.

i'm not a huge fan on BMTH either. I enjoyed both the album and the EP till i realized that for the genre they are in, the guitar work, drums and even vocals were not very impressive. so many bands are doing what they do but 10X better. they are only really big because Oli Sykes is the 'heartthrob' of hardcore over here.

Superunknown
06/13/08, 03:16 AM
I knew someone had to mention Arctic Monkeys. When the Arctic Monkeys say don't believe the hype. Listen to them and don't believe it. Their not bad, but for the last two years they've been hailed as the best British band of the last decade. Their not that good.

Yep British music is in abit of a state at the moment. I could give you a list aslong as my arm of great past British bands. But current is harder. Radiohead and Coldplay are good choices.

I agree with Superunknown- the Arctic Monkeys are good, but for some reason when they released thier debut a couple years ago, the hype over it was unbeliveable (at one point I believe Gordon Brown (now Prime Minister) publically , and very fake-ly, declared his love for them because he thought it would boost his popularity). Tbh, if you look beyond the hype, they're a talented and hard-working band, but not worth acting as though they're the new Beatles or something. Potentially decent British bands include You Me At Six (gaining popularity, but from what i've heard they don't seem 100% sure whether they want to be a sugary pop-rock 'party' band or more of an 'emo' band with edge); Kids In Glass Houses (Way too poppy for my tastes, and quite overrated- the British media hails them as the 'next big thing' whilst conviniently ignoring the thousands of very similar sounding bands out there); Twin Atlantic (superb, they deserve every success) and The Blackout (one incredible EP, one very very disapointing full length)

I'm from Reading too :]
Frank from Kill The Arcade was in the year above me at school!

I love kids in glass houses, the new album's mint & I'm really looking forward to the new yma6 CD.
Tonight is goodbye are pretty ace too, I've never really listened to any of the others though.

Enter Shikari are obviously doing pretty well for themselves & Biffy Clyro are great.
Smaller bands that I really like though are Lights Action! (http://www.myspace.com/lightsactionband) & Exit Ten (http://www.myspace.com/exitten).
Probably about 90% of the music I listen to is American though.

I've met the two guitarists from Monroe and used to talk to one of them on msn a year or so back. Didn't realise they were doing well.
