the respect the maori have for bob marley stems from his sole concert appearance in new zealand on april 16, 1979. bob's appearance in new zealand mesmerized the nation & spawned an everlasting interest in roots reggae throughout. something new was born - a distinctive musical hybrid, which combined jamaican drum & bass driven rhythms with elements of traditional maori vocals (characterized by vibrant chants & hypnotic harmonization). but among new zealand's most prominent reggae acts are herbs, a band founded more or less straight after bob's concert. they played a captivating blend of traditional maori/pacific music accentuated by reggae rhythms, proving popular throughout the pacific rim

since '79 herbs have produced a stream of reggae hits, even some with some of the country's top talent. “slice of heaven”, with dave dobbyn, in '89, tim finn joined them for “parihaka”, etc. herbs also gained a lot of respect from & worked with the likes of neil young, tina turner, stevie wonder (who are all big fans). their music often clear in its message, the sound of herbs will never be forgotten. their tunes are strongly rooted in the land in which it was created, yet like bob's it possesses a spirit & vitality that will appeal to people anywhere... truly timeless

parihaka! my favorite tune off of tim finn's self titled. also, i never knew where your screenname was from until now haha. i'm quite enjoying them right now, though i have a feeling it's going to be a little tricky hunting down an album anytime soon.

their music was soo good, pacific reggae at its finest. boy these guys were ahead of their time. "karanga ra" is a very very cool intro, not sure why i used it when it as a screen name, but i like it haha
